July - George Washington
August - Auction
September - Germany-related Program
October - Button Auction and INDYPEX preview
November - Dealer Bourse
December - Christmas Party
Notice there are some changes in the Programs
for 2017.
If you haven’t yet sponsored a program for the
Club, now is the right time to start into one. The membership is eager to see what your collection is all about.
Don't take the attitude your collection is not that interesting. All collections are different. Each has at least
one item not found in other collections. If it's interesting enough to keep you plugging away all this time, we
would all find some of it interesting to us.
Are you a topical collector? Do you keep stamps
picturing railroad locomotives, World War II military
uniforms, flags of other nations, or Super Heroes?
Maybe your interest lies in 'dead countries', countries
that no longer exist due to political struggles, such as
Hawaii, Manchukuo, German East Africa, or Danzig.
Board member Tom Chastang is in charge of our
programs. Talk to him for a few pointers.
ISC Meeting Courtesy
Dealers at meetings are respectfully requested to
close their tables when the meeting starts. Conversations on the side have become quite disruptive to the
membership.
Folks placing items up for bids for the mini-auction are asked to limit their lots to only one per
member. If after seven o’clock, all lots have been
placed on the table, with no more apparent additions, members may place a second item on the table.
ISC Board Meeting - May 15th, 2017
The Board meeting was called to order at 7:30 P.M.
on Monday, May 15 by President Mike Schweitzer.
Most members were present. Minutes of the April
meeting were read by Secretary Jim Lawler. They were
approved.
Normally the Treasurer's report would next be offered. However, for some reason this was overlooked
and we went off on another tangent. When we did get
to it, Treasurer Bob Strantz read the report. It was approved and filed for audit. Our current financial situation has $7,280.06 in our pockets. It was noted we
pulled in over $500.00 at our recent auction.
Three new membership applications were presented. These were submitted by:
• E. L. Welky
• Larry Hazlett
• Grace Pope
all from Indianapolis. All three individuals were approved for membership. Be sure to welcome these
new members when you meet them.
Now, how would you like to win 25 Indy Bucks. To
help the Kicking Mule take on a format more representative of the entire membership, we are having a Journalism contest. Here is your chance to show off your
journalistic talents. Write an article to be included in
the Kicking Mule each month. The article should have
some philatelic connection, but the content is up to
you. Send it to me in some form of electronic text. You
can use Microsoft Word, or just include it in an e-mail
to me. My e-mail is:
[email protected]
I will include it in the next issue of the Mule. Try to get
it to me by the date of our next Board meeting; the
third Monday of the month. If you have an illustration
or a picture, do not include it in the text. Sent me instructions as to where you want it to appear. By July of
2018 we should have 12 entries and the best will win
25 Indy Bucks. I, with the help of the Board, will select
(in our opinions) the best offering.
You are not limited to just one article. However,
please no more than one a month. Do not simply copy
another article from one of the stamp periodicals on
the market. It's OK to use the basic concept of another
writer, but let the words be your own.
This entire concept promises to be a lot of fun. Be
sure to include your name as it will be published along
with your article.

What Can I Collect to Make
My Album More Interesting?
Do you ever feel like there could be more to your
basic collection? I have! So I've started to branch out to
other roads without straying too far from my original
collection of stamps from Germany.
I started collecting Germany back in the 70s and
80s. Having been stationed in Munich, Germany in the
60s while spending my time with Uncle Sam, I already
had the drive to go in that direction. Having German
ancestry on my mother's side of the family also helped
give me the impetus to follow that trail.
One year for Christmas I received a Minkus Germany stamp album from my brother-in-law. That was my
favorite Christmas gift of all times. I had what I thought
was a nice, but small, collection of German stamps.
One day I stopped into one of my favorite stamp
shops. It was on the east side of Indianapolis on 10th
Street, close to Rural. Not sure of the name, but it
might have been Universal. The owner had bought a
large set of albums and was selling the contents for
a penny apiece... my favorite price. There was a tremendous amount of stamps from Germany. For seven bucks I increased my collection by 700 stamps. I
thought I had died and gone to Heaven.
After I left I got to thinking of the other Germany
related areas that were probably just as well represented. So the next day I went back to see what other
treasures I could find. I didn't see the albums when I
walked in so I asked the owner where they were. I was
told they had been sold. When I found out the owner
had let them all go for ten dollars each... and I had paid
seven just for the Germany stamps... I was sick. So it
was then I decided to continue my collection, but not
limit it to just stamps from Germany proper.
Danzig, Bohemia and Moravia, Memel, and many
others suddenly became my targets. Being a member
of the APS I joined a few of their stamp circuit sales
groups. Every few weeks I would receive a small box
in the mail filled with ten mini-albums and the stamps
all laid out with their catalogue numbers and the price
of each stamp. The next couple days were spent going
through those books to see what little goodies I could
find for my collection.
I started buying stamps from the old German States
such as Bavaria, Bremen, Baden-Wuerttemberg, and
several others. The Bavarian stamps were all reasonably priced. Since they started printing stamps in 1849
I thought they would have been more expensive. Some
of the states were indeed quite expensive and to this
day are not in my collection.
I found the stamps of the Third Reich to be quite
beautiful. Even with all the horrible things done by
the Nazis, they still made some very attractive stamps.
Many of these stamps were still put to use immediately after the end of the war.
When the war ended, Germany was divided into
four different zones; each controlled by the US, Great
Britain, France, and Russia. Of these, the Russian Zone
had the most attractive issues. Since Russia had no real
interest in reestablishing Germany's postal system, it
was up to the cities in this zone to make do with what
they had. Many of these wartime issues were reissued
with various overprints, since it was unlawful to have
Hitler's picture or a swastika, or any other Nazi indications shown on the stamp. This resulted in many interesting combinations.
With the old outdated printing equipment left after
the war, and the hurry to get new stamps to the post
offices, there were a lot of plate flaws. Double overprints, upside-down overprints, missing overprints,
etc. all went in to create a collection of freaks and errors. Some of these are quite affordable. I buy a lot of
stamps from eBay. If the sellers do not have a catalogue identifying these errors there is a good chance
for some real bargains if you keep your eyes open.
Additionally, most of these areas also printed post
cards. I tend to prefer the picture post cards as it usually makes a new souvenier for me.
Branching out in other directions there are tax
stamps, railroad stamps, ration stamps, stamps to
show you had paid your dues to 'The Party', insurance
stamps. The list is endless. Germany is not the only
country to have an assortment such as this.
So just look over your primary interest in stamp
collecting and see if there might be other smaller areas
that would hold your interest. You might just have the
impetus to head off down another tangent.
It's not replacing your original interest, but rather
finding a way to increase your scope. I will never forget
my primary interest is in the stamps of Germany, but
I know now I can see beyond the basics of my love of
German Stamps.
And here is the stamp issue that
started it all. I guess I'm now a million
aire. I just don't show it!
