ABOUT THE TALK
Diet modification is an important treatment modality for many inborn errors of metabolism, including phenylketonuria
(PKU). Untreated, PKU causes profound mental retardation, but early detection by newborn screening and life-long
treatment with a phenylalanine-restricted diet allows for normal intellectual development. However, like other chronic
disorders, compliance with the diet is often difficult for older individuals. The whey protein glycomacropeptide (GMP)
is ideally suited for the PKU diet since it is naturally low in phenylalanine. This seminar will review nutrition management of PKU and present research about the potential of GMP to provide a new diet strategy for PKU
