A la mords-moi le noeud.
It means: “a cowboy job”. Which means that something is done badly.
L’habit ne fait pas le moine.
It means: “All that glitters is not gold”. That means that all shiny things are not
gold.
Sur la paille.
It means: “To die penniless”. It means that you are a poor person.
Etre dans le pétrin
It means: “to be in the soup”, which is basically being in an embarassing situation.
Grosso modo
It means: “Roughly”: Aproximatively.
Donner la langue au chat
It means: “To throw in the sponge”, which means that you give up.
Se mettre sur son 31
“To get dressed up to the nines”. It means that you’re wearing very
beautiful clothes.
EXEMPLE: Etre dans le pétrin; “to be in
the soup”,
“Etre dans le pétrin”, cette métaphore qui daterait du 18 eme siècle, tire son origine de la pâte collante
que l’on a du mal à se défaire, cela se rapporte donc a une situation difficile, embarrassante."Being in

unravel, it thus refers to a difficult and embarrassing situation .
The meaning behind “in the soup”
most likely has to do with the
actual process of cooking, where
anything that went into the pot was
in trouble, since it was becoming
part of a meal. This explanation
makes it seem obvious why being
“in the soup” means being in
trouble or having a problem, since
being cooked is certainly an
undesirable state. This is not the
only possible source of this idiom,
however.
