VOLUME 94 - #1
Rabban Blair Schaufele and Lady Lil who were rooting for the
Canadian team.
Notes From The Pote
by Donald E. Lane
I want to congratulate and thank Richard, grandson to Executive
Aide Dave Peterson and Lady Cheryl. He was in a contest on the
baseball field and was able to catch a t-shirt in a bowl strapped to his
head which he won. We were all winners, because of him we all
received Aqua Sox baseballs. I don’t know who was more excited to
get the baseball - Richard or I.
Our Oriental Band took first place at
PNSA in Billings, MT! I am so proud of
the Oriental Band, they were ready willing
and able to WIN. Way to go all of you. We
had a great time in Billings, MT for the
PNSA 2016. A big thanks to all the Al
Bedoo Shriners that worked hard on
getting it done. Lady Denise and I sure
enjoyed being there with our Divan and
Aides. It will be our turn to host PNSA,
July 26th-29th. Executive Aide Scott Wells
and Lady Ann have done a wonderful job of getting us in the right
direction. Please call Scotty and Ann if you want to volunteer to
help.
Queen Guyanna and the Ladies of the Shrine had their visit of the
Grand High Priestess. Unfortunately, Lady Denise and I were not
able to be there. We want to thank my trusty Assistant Rabban Larry
Bronner and Lady Anne for being there in my place.
I want to thank all of the members that attended our stated meeting
September 14th. There was good banter by all. We voted four new
members into our fraternity, how exciting. I want to thank all of you
that are out there finding new members.
If I forget to thank you for what you did, it is not intentional, please
know that I try to thank everyone for all they do. I want to thank
those that let me know.
Haunted House is fast approaching it starts on October 7 th, it is our
largest fund raiser. If you can or will help, please contact Assistant
Rabban Larry Bronner or Lady Annie. It takes a lot of people to
make this a success - please just don’t sit around and complain about
how much, how busy you are or just complain about it. Get out there
and help - we can use you.
I forgot to thank the NW Shrine Club for their $500 each donation to
the Portland and Spokane Shrine Hospitals. The $1000 was donated
to them by Jeckyl & Hyde Deli and Ale House. This is also the place
where NW Shrine Club meets.
Remember we are here “for the children”.
See you on the golf course.
I want to acknowledge the Directors Staff. Thank you for providing
popcorn, cotton candy, and sno-cones for free to those attending the
Nile Picnic and providing popcorn for the past decade.
Lady Denise and I had a great time at Daughters of the Nile - NW
Daze and all of the Ladies and Gentlemen that attended from all
over. Queen Molly, it was great fun to be involved in the skit. Your
banquet was great fun and it was an honor to speak at your dinner.
Chief Rabban Gale Kenney, Assistant Rabban Larry Bronner and I
had so much fun being selected out of all those applications to be
members of Ladies drum corps. Obviously; I had the most talent
when the drum sticks quit flying. :)

Nile Shrine Stated Meeting
Previous Minutes: The minutes of the May 15, 2016 meeting
were waved by vote of those present.
September 14, 2016
Black Camel: The Black Camel list was read by the recorder.
Nile’s High Priest & Prophet, Steve Dazey, gave the invocation
prior to the meal. Following the meal the divan was introduced
by Noble Larry Gillespie, Marshal for the evening:
Potentate:
Chief Rabban:
Assistant Rabban:
High Priest & Prophet:
Oriental Guide:
Treasurer:
Recorder:
Petitions for membership or affiliation: There were four (4)
petitions for membership. They were;
Brent Arnold
Eduardo Herrera
Joey Ignacio
Brian Wheeler
All four candidates were voted upon by the Nobility and passed
the ordeal of the ballot. They are now Shriners.
Ill. Sir Donald E. Lane
Noble Gale H. Kenney
Noble Larry Bronner
Noble Steven L. Dazey
Noble Michael J. Riley
Noble Steve Kiely
Ill. James L. Hutchins
The Potentate called upon Treasurer Steve Kiely to give his
Treasurer’s Report. He presented a PowerPoint showing Nile’s
August 31, 2016 financial status. He had also placed several
copies of Nile’s financial statements on each table in the room.
He stated that any member with a question regarding Nile’s
financial position could contact him at any time and he would
do his best to answer them. The Treasurer’s report was
accepted by vote of those present.
The Marshal then introduced the Past Potentates in attendance:
2000
2005
2007
2009
2013
2015
Ill. G. L. “Jerry” Seldon
Ill. George Wohlleben
Ill. Richard Sardeson
Ill. Gene Gilbert
Ill. James L. Hutchins
Ill. David Brady Sr.
The Potentate asked for any old business. There was none.
Under new business the Potentate asked the Recorder to
present any new business that needed to be brought to the
Nobility. The recorder brought up five (5) items. They were:
Nile’s Legion of Honor presented the colors. The Nobles joined
in the Shrine Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of the Star
Spangled Banner. The Legion of Honor posted the colors and all
were dismissed with the thanks of the Potentate.
The Potentate asked any new Nobles in attendance to come
forward and be introduced and greeted by the Divan.
1. It is time to start our search for 2017 Oriental Guide
candidates. Any Noble who is interested in becoming a
member of our Divan is encouraged to talk to any current
Divan member for information on this rewarding and
challenging position.
At 7:00 pm the Potentate then opened the meeting for business
and ceremony. The Captain of the Guard secured our Temple,
the Oriental Guide set the Alter, and the Chief Rabban verified
that all present were members of the order.
2. On October 8, 2016, the annual Greeters Crab Feed will take
place here at Nile. The cost is only $35.00/person or $260.00/
table. Tickets are now on sale in the Nile business office.
Continued on page 4
All smiles while picking up the donated vans from the Portland hospital—pictured above, Ill Sir David Brady PP, HP&P Steve Dazey & Chief
Rabban Gale Kenney. One of the vans will be used to shuttle nobles around to events such as parades. The other will be used to move freight.
Let’s all give them a big “thank you” for this generous donation!

Nile Shrine Stated Meeting Continued…
3. There is a serious structural problem with our ballroom dance
floor. It was noted in a 2009 engineering study and has become
critical now. A number of floor joists are now completely broken.
Photos of the damaged joists were placed on the tables for the
Nobles to look at. The necessary repairs are being evaluated by
Ira Gross Engineers, a structural engineering company with which
the Nile Divan is familiar. Repairs will be extensive and
expensive.
The Potentate said that after paying approximately $45,000 in
2015 income taxes on Nile Holding Corporation (the golf course
operation), the combined Nile Shrine and Nile Holding
Corporation has approximately $350,000 in available cash at
this time.
Announcements by the Nobility included a call for new
members in the Mini-Bike unit, the Kitsap Peninsula Shrine
Club and a call for all Shriners to bring in new Nobles.
4. The Recorder has ordered numerous purchases and repairs to
our facility including, but not limited to, repair of our ice machine
in the Pote’s lounge, repair of 2 toilets, replacement of 120+ red
wine glasses, replacement of knives and forks and replacement of
drink glasses. There was a motion and second to approve up to
$4000 be transferred from our DAD’s fund to our General fund to
reimburse for these facility related expenses. The motion passed.
Ill. Richard Sardeson mentioned that an elementary school in
Oak Harbor, Washington had a penny fundraiser that generated
$1400 for the Spokane Shriners Hospital for Children. Ill. Gene
Gilbert had taken the money to the hospital.
The Potentate honored those with birthdays this month.
5. The Recorder reiterated that neither he nor the Treasurer are
taking any money this year, for anything. For several years now
the Recorder’s wife, Marilyn Hutchins, has been on a mission to
improve the appearance of Nile’s catering lobby by purchasing
upgraded furniture. To this end, Marilyn has purchased a desk at
$320, a table at $120 and six chairs at $80 plus $30 for
transportation costs for the Recorder’s sister-in-law, Susan
Adams, who picked up and transported all the furniture to Nile.
All furniture was purchased used off Craigslist and negotiated
below asking prices. The Recorder wanted it to be clear to all
Nobles that there was nothing questionable going on with checks
written to his wife and sister-in-law. There was a motion and
second to approve these expenses. The motion passed.
In closing, Oriental Guide Michael Riley to secure our alter and
Assistant Rabban Steve Dazey gave the benediction. Upon
completion of these tasks, our Potentate waved all form and
ceremony and the Temple Stated Meeting was closed at 8:00
pm, peace and harmony prevailing.
Assistant Rabban, Noble Larry Bronner, donated $400 to Nile’s
Dad’s fund from work at the Oriental Band’s corn booth and from
sale of key chain fobs he had made and sold.
34th Annual Greeters Crab Feed
at the Nile Shrine Center
The Potentate mentioned that in the past few weeks the Divan had
received nonspecific offers from a firm called Top Golf, Inc and a
second offer to purchase an unspecified portion of our property
from an unknown New York and Canadian concern. Specific
details of any purchase offers will be provided to the Nobility
when the Divan receives them.
October 8, 2016
Respectfully submitted,
James L. Hutchins

A Gentle Reminder
Attention Nobles
Brother Nobles, on the occasion of visiting one of the Clubs
last month, and at that meeting, the President showed the
new pin they had designed. It was a beautiful pin and it also
included the Masonic Square and Compasses on it.
Nile Shrine is seeking candidates for 2017 Oriental
Guide. The journey through the five-year Nile Shrine Divan
line begins with Oriental Guide. If you are interested or
know someone who is, please contact any current Divan
member for more information.
Smile with Nile.
I would like to remind all of the Units and Clubs, as well as
the Divan members, that if a pin, coat, jacket, glass, etc. is to
be designed and it includes the Masonic Square and
Compasses as part of the design, permission must first be
obtained from the Grand Master of Masons of Washington,
prior to having the item made, per Sec. 12.01 B.L., Use of
Masonic Name and Emblem, of the Washington Masonic
Code.
If you want to have a good time in Shrinedom,
the Oriental Band is the place to be!! We have
openings for every Noble regardless of talents or
lack thereof. Just stop by on a Monday at 6:00
pm in the Nile basement and start the best days
of your life!
Please be cognizant of this requirement.

Thank you,

Jeckyl & Hyde Restaurant – Second Annual Car Show
The car show was held on April 30th, from 10–3:00 with many
cars in attendance. At the May NW Shrine Club dinner meeting,
owner, Rich (& Kerrie) van Dommelen presented the Nile Divan
Potentate, Donald E. Lane & NW Shrine Club president, Bill
Barquist with a $1,151 check for the Children’s Hospitals which
represented that day’s profits. After last year’s car show, Rich also
donated $425 for the same purpose.
NW Shrine Club members, clad in their Shrine coats, hats and
caps, participated by donating raffle items and assisted in the car
judging. NW Shrine Club membership turnout for Rich’s Car
Show was great, with members, Bill Barquist, Glenn Hutchings,
Gary Cory, Don Lane, Frank Morrow, Gary Hedberg, & Gerrit
Kuiken (and several spouses) attending and all had a great time!
Bill Barquist brought his bike surrey – which the children in
attendance enjoyed immensely!

interested.
Membership in the Calliope Unit is down so we still need new
members. Please let us know if you are interested. It does not take
up a lot of your time especially if you are working.

everyone's help to make this a success. Let’s have some
fun!

entered his Surrey Bike in the parade, assisted by Nile Past
Potentate, Sat Tashiro.
This time of year we are, and have been working on, getting our

If you are interested in joining the Nile Car Club, you do
not need to own a collectors vehicle. Having an interest in
anything automotive is the only requirement.
The Shurtah continues to meet upstairs by the Potentate’s office
on the first Wednesday of each month, with Zem Zem starting at

The Shurtah Unit remains available to the Nile Shrine Center for
“security service” whenever alcoholic beverages are being served
in the main building or in the picnic areas. In addition, the Shurtah
serves as security for the “Haunted House” in October in regards
to crowd control and the supervision of parking.
The Shurtah Unit is always looking for Shriners who have served
in a law enforcement capacity in any locale, including the military
police, to become active members in this service organization.

If you have any questions relative to the Shurtah Unit, its
membership, or its activities, please contact:
Dr. Skipp Metzger, Scribe, 360-378-0166
On August 6th, we had 7 bikes in the Lake City “Pioneers Day”
parade which is the most we have had in about 5 years. It is
great to see our unit making a comeback. With our parade
season winding down we have only one parade left and that is in
Granite Falls on Oct. 1st for their “Railroad Days” parade. Form
up is at 11am with the parade starting at noon. We usually park
behind the Masonic Temple. Granite Falls Masonic temple
serves breakfast starting around 8:30 am for a price of around
$5.00/person. Let’s all show up for this parade and show
everyone how proud we are to be a Shriner.
Our mini bike unit is going to start having monthly meetings at
Nile starting on Sunday, November 13th. Meeting will start at
2:00 pm and should go no longer than an hour. If you are
interested in finding out more information about us, please come
to our meeting. Our number one goal is to build our membership
in the mini bike unit.
We are looking for new riders to join us for next
year, and have bikes available. The cost per year
is $50 which includes your bike. The more riders
we have in the parades, the better we look. Our
riding practices will start in March 2017. We
practice on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm at
Mountlake Terrace High School. Practices are over by 3:30 pm.
Parade season usually starts the 2nd weekend of April in La
Conner.
