Diabetes Awareness Month: Myths or Facts
Observed every November, American Diabetes Month is an
important element in the American Diabetes Association’s efforts
to focus our nation’s attention on disease and the tens of millions
of people affected by it.
There are many myths about diabetes that make it difficult for
people to believe some of the hard facts – such as diabetes is a
serious and potentially deadly disease.
Myth: People with diabetes need to follow a special diet.
Fact: People with diabetes benefit from the same healthy diet that
is good for everyone else.
Myth: Diabetes is not a serious disease.
Fact: Diabetes is a growing epidemic with a devastating physical,
emotional and financial on our country.
• 1/2 cup margarine, melted
• 1 cup light corn syrup
• 1 cup white sugar
• 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 4 eggs
• 1 cup chopped pecans
• 1 recipe pastry for a 9 inch single
crust pie
Myth: People with diabetes can’t get
tattoos.
Fact: It is considered safe, as long as
your diabetes is well controlled.
Myth: People with diabetes are more
likely to get colds and other
illnesses.
Fact: You are no more likely to get
sick, but an illness can make your
diabetes more difficult to control.

Myth: It’s possible to have “just a touch” or a “little diabetes”.
Fact: There is no such thing. Everyone who has diabetes runs the
risk of serious complications.

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. In a heavy
saucepan combine melted margarine,
corn syrup, white sugar and cocoa.
Cook over low heat, stirring constantly,
until sugar dissolves. Add vanilla, salt
and eggs, stirring well. Stir in 1/2 cup
pecans. Mix well.
Pour filling into unbaked pastry shell
and top with remaining 1/2 cup pecans.
Bake for 55 minutes. Let cool and serve.
