No side shorter than 150cm and no side longer than 250cm. 

Pieced bed quilts that are constructed using traditional techniques and materials and have a conventional edge finish (no raw edges). The quilt must be your own design or a design derived from using elements from the public domain. It cannot be a copy of another quilt/art work or made from a commercial quilt pattern. 
Whole‐cloth bed quilts should be entered in this category. Standard and Masters entry levels.  Appliquéd Bed Quilts 
No side shorter than 150cm and no side longer than 250cm. 
Appliquéd quilts, with or without piecing, that are constructed using traditional techniques and materials and have a conventional edge finish (no raw edges). 1 
The quilt must be your own design or a design derived from using elements from the public domain. It cannot be a copy of another quilt/art work or made from a commercial quilt pattern. Standard and Masters entry levels.  Wall Quilts – Pictorial 
No side longer than 200cm. 
Quilts that are a depiction/representation of (a) person(s), (a) place(s) and /or (a) thing(s). The representation can be realistic or stylised. Any technique(s) can be used. The quilt must be your own design or a design derived from using elements from the public domain. It cannot be a copy of another quilt/art work or made from a commercial quilt pattern. 
Standard and Masters entry levels.  Wall Quilts – Organic Shapes 
No side longer than 200cm. 
Quilts composed predominantly of organic shapes. Any technique or combination of techniques can be used. The quilt must be your own design or a design derived from using elements from the public domain. It cannot be a copy of another quilt/art work or made from a commercial quilt pattern. 
Standard and Masters entry levels.  Wall Quilts – Geometric Shapes 
No side longer than 200cm. 
Quilts composed predominantly of geometric shapes. Any technique or combination of techniques can be used. The quilt must be your own design or a design derived from using elements from the public domain. It cannot be a copy of another quilt/art work or made from a commercial quilt pattern. 
Standard and Masters entry levels 2  Wall Quilts – Fibre Art 
No side longer than 200cm. 
Quilts that are made of fibre/cloth where the composition tends to be abstract. Any technique(s) and materials can be used. It must include some quilting through three layers. 
The quilt must be your own design. Standard and Masters entry levels  Open 
No side longer than 250cm. 
The Open category provides a place for quilts that do not fit in the other categories. The quilts must not violate copyright laws. Any technique or combination of techniques can be used. The following quilts can be entered: 
a) Quilts constructed and quilted by an individual AND o made using a published/commercial pattern (including so called “Modern” quilts) or designed by another individual for you or o made using computer‐digitized quilting and/or machine embroidery patterns or o have been started in a class or o be a replica of an antique quilt (made approximately before 1960) or o made from non‐quilted traditional techniques (Yo‐yo’s, Cathedral Window etc). b) Collaborative Quilts ‐ any quilt that is constructed (pieced, appliquéd, quilted, embellished or finished) by two or three individuals.  Group Quilts 
No side longer than 250cm. 3 

Quilts made by 4 or more actively‐involved people. Any technique or combination of techniques can be used. Group quilts must be a design of one or more of the group members, or a design derived from using elements from the public domain. It cannot be a copy of another quilt/art work.  Challenge Siyadala – We Create Theme Challenge  Miniatures 
No side longer than 60cm or block side longer than 10cm. 
Quilts that are a scaled‐down version (in proportion) of a regular‐sized quilt.  Conceptual Art 
No side longer than 200cm. 
Quilts in which the concept(s) or idea(s) involved in the work take precedence over traditional aesthetic and material concerns. The main concern of these works will be to make a statement: The visual communication of a strong viewpoint gets priority above the “beauty” of the surface. The originality and the thought‐provoking manner in which the medium has been used, should come into play. Any technique or combination of techniques can be used. Competition Rules: RULES FOR ENTERING THE COMPETITION All entries must be made predominantly from cloth, consist of at least three (3) layers and be quilted through all layers, with the exception of alternate traditional methods entered into the Open category (e.g. Crazy Patchwork, Cathedral Window, Mola). 
All entries must be in pristine condition (no dirt, stains, animal hair, and odours). 
All entries must be solely the work of those stated as the Maker(s) on the entry form. 
An entrant cannot pay to have work done on their entry. 4 

Each quilt must be designed, constructed and quilted by only one person, with the exception of quilts entered into the Open, Group and Community (if included) categories. All forms of free‐motion machine‐quilted quilts with no computer assisted elements can be entered in any category whether long‐arm, medium‐arm or domestic sewing machines. The BSR is not considered a computer assisted gadget and can be used. Quilts using computer‐digitized quilting and/or embroidery patterns can only be entered in the Open category. 
If the stated design source of a quilt is another quilt or other published image, comprehensive design credits must be given and the quilt entry must be accompanied by an A4 photo or (colour) photocopy of the design source. These are to be placed in a clear plastic sleeve and pinned to the back of the quilt. Include a letter of permission/proof, as far as possible. 
Quilts previously entered into a South African National Quilt Competition are excluded from entering again. 
A maximum of four (4) entries are allowed per person, excluding any special Challenges or non‐judged specialty exhibitions. 
No quilt may be entered into more than one category. 
The category choice is the sole responsibility of the entrant. No Festival Committee member, juror or judge will shift quilts between categories. 
Quilts with heavy embellishments, rigid frames, special mounting or installations are not allowed. 
All quilts must be able to be hung from a 10cm sleeve, sewn to the top back of the quilt, 2cm short of either side, unless otherwise stated in a specific category. 
All quilts must have a cloth label securely sewn to the back of the quilt, placed on the lower left‐hand corner (viewed from the back). This label must contain the unique Quilt Entry Code, Quilt Title, Quilt Maker’s Name, Address and Contact Details and Date (or Year) the quilt was made. All this information, except for the Quilt Entry Code and Quilt Title, is to be covered by a piece of dark cloth, tacked onto the label. 
Consent for a quilt to travel on the next Travelling Exhibition should it be chosen by filling in the tick box. 
Quilts must be measured horizontally across the widest part of the quilt, and the measured length of the quilt must include any elements hanging from the quilt. 
Although the greatest care will be taken with all entries, the quilts are exhibited entirely at the risk of the owner. Entrants are responsible for arranging their own insurance. 
The judges’ decision is final and NO queries or correspondence pertaining to the judging will be considered. 5 
The National Quilt Festival committee reserves the right to photograph any work for publicity purposes, acknowledging the quilt makers. 
The organizers reserve the right to reject any quilt that they feel is inappropriate, offensive or of a standard unacceptable to be exhibited at a South African National Quilt Competition.
