MONTEGO BAY
Spotlight on
Montego Bay
PORT & SHOPPING MAP
HistorY
Kingston, the largest town in Jamaica, is also the capital of Jamaica.
Montego Bay is the second largest town in Jamaica and Jamaica
is the third largest island in the Caribbean. It is approximately 52
miles wide by 144 miles long and has a population of 2.5 million. The
population of Montego Bay, or MoBay as the locals call it, is around
70,000.
capital
Kingston is the official capital of
Jamaica. However, Montego Bay, or
MoBay, as it is popularly called, is the
tourism capital.
Jamaica’s original inhabitants were the Arawak Indians, a peace loving tribe who dwelled on the island from 700 A.D. In fact, the name
Jamaica comes from the Arawak word “Xaymaca” (pronounced
X-ah-Maca) which means “land of wood and water”.
Christopher Columbus discovered the island in 1494, and actually
lived on Jamaica for a year when he was shipwrecked during his
second voyage in 1503. The island remained Spanish until Oliver
Cromwell’s army won the island for the British once and for all in
1670 under the Treaty of Madrid. Jamaica was under British rule for
the next 300 years until Jamaica declared its independence in 1962.
During this time Jamaica had quite a turbulent history, perhaps more
so than any other Caribbean island. Today Jamaica is still a “land of wood and water”. It’s your classic tropical island renowned for its bright
sunshine, gorgeous blue water, mountain peaks and waterfalls. It may be the most visual island of the cruise. Take your cameras and plenty of
film ashore!
Jamaica
Local Flavors
Besides its beautiful landscape, welcoming people and perfect weather, Jamaica is best known for the delicious and stimulating Blue
Mountain coffee produced here for nearly 300 years. Jamaica’s location is prime for producing the best coffee in the world. Straw hats
crafted locally from fibers of the jipijapa plant shield the heads of coffee growers and visitors alike from the intense Jamaica sun.
docking/tendering
The ship will either dock or tender into Montego
Bay. The duration of the tender ride one way is
approximately ten minutes.
shore excursions
Please check your tour ticket for the correct meeting time and location for your tour. Your cruise line
representative will direct you to your transportation.
Transportation
Taxis are unmetered and it is advisable to arrange
fares before departing. Official taxis have red
license plates and are available at the pier. Taxi to
City Center, Margaritaville or Doctor Cave Beach:
$5 per person one way. It is strongly recommended
that guests use taxis to get to shopping and restaurants.
How To Get To Town
Montego Bay’s downtown and shopping area is
approximately two miles from the pier. Take the $5
shuttle and you can get on and off all day, it stops
at the City Center, Margaritaville and Doctor's Cove
beach. (Some days are excluded.)
location
The island is about 90 miles due south
of Cuba.
Shopping
The best duty-free shopping in MoBay is in the
City Center area and at Shoppes at Rose Hall. With
some of the best prices in the entire Caribbean on
jewelry and fine watches, “duty-free savings” is
the phrase to use when describing the shopping
in this port. For best buys in jewelry, look out for
diamonds, tanzanite and other gemstones as well
as gold. The best names in watches can be found
in Mobay, at prices recongnized as some of the
lowest in the Caribbean. Be sure to pick up some
of Jamaica’s world renowned Blue Mountain coffee and rum as well as some local art and unique
T-shirts.
phone locations
Telephones are located on the pier.
