MONTEGO BAY Spotlight on Montego Bay PORT & SHOPPING MAP HistorY Kingston, the largest town in Jamaica, is also the capital of Jamaica. Montego Bay is the second largest town in Jamaica and Jamaica is the third largest island in the Caribbean. It is approximately 52 miles wide by 144 miles long and has a population of 2.5 million. The population of Montego Bay, or MoBay as the locals call it, is around 70,000. capital Kingston is the official capital of Jamaica. However, Montego Bay, or MoBay, as it is popularly called, is the tourism capital. Jamaica’s original inhabitants were the Arawak Indians, a peace loving tribe who dwelled on the island from 700 A.D. In fact, the name Jamaica comes from the Arawak word “Xaymaca” (pronounced X-ah-Maca) which means “land of wood and water”. Christopher Columbus discovered the island in 1494, and actually lived on Jamaica for a year when he was shipwrecked during his second voyage in 1503. The island remained Spanish until Oliver Cromwell’s army won the island for the British once and for all in 1670 under the Treaty of Madrid. Jamaica was under British rule for the next 300 years until Jamaica declared its independence in 1962. During this time Jamaica had quite a turbulent history, perhaps more so than any other Caribbean island. Today Jamaica is still a “land of wood and water”. It’s your classic tropical island renowned for its bright sunshine, gorgeous blue water, mountain peaks and waterfalls. It may be the most visual island of the cruise. Take your cameras and plenty of film ashore! Jamaica Local Flavors Besides its beautiful landscape, welcoming people and perfect weather, Jamaica is best known for the delicious and stimulating Blue Mountain coffee produced here for nearly 300 years. Jamaica’s location is prime for producing the best coffee in the world. Straw hats crafted locally from fibers of the jipijapa plant shield the heads of coffee growers and visitors alike from the intense Jamaica sun. docking/tendering The ship will either dock or tender into Montego Bay.
