FOX VALLEY SHRM MEETING UWO SHRM TO COMPETE IN T H E H R G A M E S On January 17th, I, Sarah Frank, attended my first Fox Valley SHRM meeting at Liberty Hall in Kimberly. Eric Grosso, a State Labor Economist, talked about approaching workforce changes in Wisconsin. He emphasized that the baby boomer generation will be retiring in the next 10-15 years at a faster rate than workers entering the labor market. The 2006 Wisconsin Student Conference and HR Games will be held on February 24 and 25 at Alverno College in Milwaukee, WI. The HR Games are a fun way to motivate and prepare students for PHR certification. The HR Games consist of one– or two-day series of game show style matches, between teams of up to three undergraduate students from various colleges and universities. The HR Games are an event that offers the opportunity to bring professional chapter volunteers, students and student chapter advisors together in a meaningful way. The students receive an opportunity to network with other students and showcase their knowledge to HR practitioners. According to Grosso, the baby boomer generation will be retiring at a younger age than we have seen in the past. They will also have more discretionary income than past generations. Jobs in health care, social assistance, professional and business services, retail trade, and leisure and hospitality have the highest projected employment. He is worried that we will not have a labor force to fill all the upcoming job openings. Many future jobs in Wisconsin are going to require some postsecondary education. A plethora of students are being educated in Wisconsin and then commuting to other metro areas outside the state with better opportunities. Grosso stated that our state needs to make jobs attractive to the up and coming labor force to keep those who are educated here, in the Wisconsin work force. The next Fox Valley SHRM meeting is February 21st, 2006 from 7:30AM10:00AM. Attorney Dave Praska will be speaking on Labor Law. If you are interested in attending contact Sarah Frank. UWO SHRM will be sending three teams of three UWO/National SHRM members to compete. The teams consist of: Lindsey Robinson, Katie Buchert, Lindsey Deckert, Juliane Marquardt, Liz Miron, Scott Kosnicki, Megan Gesme, Katie Humbright and Paul Mijal. If you are interested in this event, keep it in mind for next year!! We will give an update on the weekend’s events at the February 28th meeting. Lambeau Field F u n d r a i s e r On Saturday, February 11, 2006 several SHRM Members will going to a Lambeau Field Hockey event to participate in a fundraiser. They will be selling hot chocolate, hot dogs, and brats. If you would like to participate in the next fundraising opportunity talk to Scott Kosnicki!
