Friday 8 July 2016 Dear Parents and Carers, I wanted to take the opportunity this week to thank all parents who contributed to our School Fund and to show you the brand new minibus that your donations have paid for. We are thrilled with it and the PE and Duke of Edinburgh departments, particularly, can’t wait to use it! Additionally, as a result of our #RoseberyProud initiative we have also, with the help of the PSA and School Fund, purchased 15 new picnic tables, which have already made a big difference to our lunchtime provision. We have surveyed all tutor groups to ask what further improvements they would like to see us make to the school environment. All mentioned more outside seating, which we will continue to add to over the next few months. They also would like better temperature control in some of the classrooms, more bins and more blinds in all the classrooms. In January we successfully bid for £600,000 to replace over 20 boilers around the school; this two year project will have a big impact for students and staff in the winter months. We have also committed to replacing the blinds as the students have requested and the next big project is to replace as many windows as possible around the school. This will, however require another bid, which we will be able to submit in the next school year. Of course, the biggest improvement which the students rightly cite is the swimming pool. Over the last two years, our School Business Manager Mrs Clarke has been in touch with a large number of swimming clubs to see if, in partnership, we could reestablish this facility. We have also explored all bid avenues available, but as yet we have not been able to find a financially viable solution, because of the immense cost of repair and then of its maintenance, which is a source of considerable frustration to us all. We would love to have access to funds for other exciting initiatives -a replacement Rosebery School Whitehorse Drive Epsom KT18 7NQ T.01372 720439 www.roseberyschool.co.uk Follow us at RoseberySchool1 1 for Ebbisham, our 80 year old former primary building which currently houses MFL, or to build a new Sixth Form block. However, you can now only bid for funding to improve the condition of existing buildings, rather than for new and exciting builds. I hope you can see from this snapshot how important to us your School Fund contributions are. If you haven’t made a donation this year, then perhaps you will consider doing so in the months to come. We continue to try to find other sources of income too, but in the face of 8% real term cuts in funding, we will be increasingly reliant on the School Fund and PSA to help us provide, what I consider to be some of the basics for our students and staff. Have a good weekend. Form 9DX recently arranged a charity event which raised £42.40. “We were raising the money for See Ability, a charity that offers aid to those who have sight difficulties, be it blindness or hard of sight. We acquired some special glasses that, when worn, would give the wearer the experience of having a sight difficulty. They were then instructed to find certain prizes from a 'lottery'. We just received a letter from See Ability, thanking us for our contribution to their cause.” Congratulations 9DX #Roseberyproud. The courts have not be resurfaced for over ten years and currently there are no plans to have them maintained, despite their poor condition. The more people who sign, demonstrating demand and use of the courts, the easier it will be for the council to bid for funding and they be returned to their former glory for the benefit of all. Many thanks! https://www.change.org/p/epsom-and-ewell-borough-council-save-epsom-s-alexandra-recreation-groundtennis-courts Best wishes Councillor Jane Race College Ward - EEBC A Plea from Student Services Can you please ensure ALL uniform and PE Kits are clearly named. We are receiving large quantities of lost property without names and this is making it incredibly difficult for us to re unite it with its owner! We really appreciate your help with this, Rosebery Student Services Dear Parents, We are looking for some parents who may be able to volunteer a few hours a week to do some speaking practice with our A level French and Spanish students. You would ideally be a native speaker or bilingual, having studied/lived in a French or Spanish-speaking country. Having conversation practice, and being able to discuss the culture and society of the target language country is an invaluable part of our A level students’ preparation for their final assessments and it helps them to grow in confidence if they are able to express themselves in the target language in a more relaxed situation than the more formal classroom environment. We would really appreciate your support and if this is something that you might be able to help us with, please contact me at school via email: [email protected] Thank you in advance Ms P Wright Head of Modern Foreign Languages Rosebery School Whitehorse Drive Epsom KT18 7NQ T.01372 720439 www.roseberyschool.co.uk Follow us at RoseberySchool1 6 CANCELLED EVENT Please note, the Rosebery Summer Festival has been cancelled for this evening. All Year 7 French students have become budding young actors over the past few weeks as they have all been rehearsing hard in order to perform a play entirely in French. The play focused on the events leading up to and during the French revolution in 1789 and students learnt a lot about why the revolution happened and what happened to the King afterwards. Many groups were able to watch each other's performances and all students worked hard to learn their lines (no mean feat when they are all in French!), make props and bring in costumes. We are very proud of all their efforts. Félicitations à toutes!
