•  Political parties formed b/c the Constitution
provided for a strong national gov’t & the gov’t
made important decisions
•  People joined together in parties to attempt to
control the decisions of the government
•  These early squabbles created allies and
enemies
–  Two camps emerge
•  Federalist
Federalist
•  Led by Alexander Hamilton
•  Were in favor of the policies of Hamilton
•  Believed in a strong central government that
would promote trade and industry.
•  Most were from New England
•  The Lowcountry elite from South Carolina tended to
support the Federalists
•  Most South Carolinians supported the assumption
of state debts because so much of the war had been
fought in South Carolina and therefore the state had
more debt
