The Cyclones were impressive in the first period, moving the puck more quickly and concisely than the team has perhaps all season, and it resulted in Iowa State dominating the opening frame offensively. Chris Cucullu (Anchorage, Alaska – Nelson Leafs/KIJHL) put the Cyclones up 1-0 at 12:22 mark when he sniped a goal top shelf from just inside the hash marks on a Ryan Reid (Kelowna, British Columbia – Castlegar Rebels/KIJHL) feed across the slot and Joe Bueltel (Louisville, Colo. – Dubuque Fighting Saints/USHL) foiled a Bronchos power play with only 25 seconds left in the period when he scored shorthanded from the low slot on a rebound from a Trevor Lloyd (Commerce, Mich. – Rochester Ice Hawks) shot on net, one of 18 for the period while Iowa State limited Central Oklahoma to only 8. Central Oklahoma picked it up a notch in the second period, though, and ate into Iowa State’s lead only 49 seconds in when Thierry Martine fired a first shot toward the trailing pad of a butterflied Scott Ismond (Calgary, Alberta – Squamish Wolfpack/PIJHL) that rebounded toward the hash marks and was rifled in by Donald Geary for the power play goal. The Cyclones extended their lead to two again at 5:30 of the second when Austin Parle (Ames, Iowa – Idaho Jr. Steelheads/WSHL) made pass toward the far post that was finished by David Kurbatsky (San Ramon, Calif. – Owatonna Express/NAHL) for the 3-1 lead, but the Bronchos continued to gain ground in the second and by the time Michael Sullivan scored a power play goal high at 17:22, Central Oklahoma had drawn even with Iowa State in shots on net at 27-27. Despite being outplayed by the Bronchos in the second period, the Cyclones still went into the second intermission up two goals thanks to a patient, top-shelf goal out front by Parle with 5.6 seconds left in the period. Up 4-2 after two and only 20 minutes of gameplay removed from one of the team’s best periods of the season, Iowa State then played one of its worst periods of 2012-13, which proved extremely costly in the 14th-ranked Cyclones’ efforts to down the 16th-ranked Bronchos. Riley Spraggs set the tone at 1:39 of the third period when he skated the puck into the offensive zone and then fired a hard shot across Ismond that scored blocker side, and Anthony Knuth tied the game 4-4 at 6:12 when he and Jordan Bledsoe converted on a give-and-go from the hash marks for Central Oklahoma’s third power-play goal. Losing a grip on the game, Iowa State was able to breathe a sigh of relief only 30 seconds after Knuth’s goal, as a Central Oklahoma goal was waived off at 6:59, but not for long, as the Bronchos established their first lead of the game at 7:08 of the third when Shane Khalaf finished a pass from the end boards at the far post to chase Ismond from the net. Paul Karus (Brookfield, Wisc. – Mass Maple Leafs/CHA) was inserted in net for the Cyclones following Khalaf’s goal, but the Iowa State penalty kill was no more effective in front of Karus than it was Ismond, as Knuth scored the Bronchos’ fourth power play goal of the game at 11:33 when he took a cross-ice pass in the neutral zone from Grauer, skated in, and sniped a shot glove side for the 6-4 advantage and Central Oklahoma’s fourth unanswered goal. A tripping call to the Bronchos’ Ryan Marrs at 16:48 offered the Cyclones a prime opportunity to get back into the game, and the Cyclones took it when Cucullu scored low from the face-off circle only 22 seconds into the power, but an Iowa State offensive flurry late in the period proved fell short in sending the game to overtime and the Cyclones suffered a heart-breaking 6-5 loss after starting the game so well. The Cyclones’ loss to the Bronchos drops Iowa State to 17-15-1-2 for the season. Iowa State takes on sixth-ranked Oklahoma tomorrow afternoon at 4:00. NOTES: Chris Cucullu’s two-goal game was his second of the season, his first since a 9-4 win over North Dakota State Sept. 21, and gives him 10 goals for the season, making him the eight Cyclone to cross the ten-goal mark this season. David Kurbatsky became the sixth Cyclone to reach 10 goals for the season with his second-period goal and Austin Parle became the seventh with his tally with 5.6 seconds left in the second period. Parle’s two-point game gives him 3 goals and 4 assists in his last 3 games. J.P. Kascsak’s two assists on the night gives him a team-leading 17 assists for the season. Kascsak’s 32 points (15-17-32) is still one behind Jon Feavel’s 33 (20-13-33) for the team lead in scoring. By assisting on Parle goal, David Kurbatsky also had a two-point night and was one of five Cyclones to do so. Ryan Reid has 6 points (1-5-6) in his last seven games. Despite Iowa State scoring five goals, no Cyclone defensemen picked up a point on the night.
