ENROLMENTS FOR 2018 GRADE 8 PUPILS
We encourage all our parents to continue to assist us in
sourcing quality learners from our feeder area and local
schools. The 2018 application process commences from the
18th April 2017 and we remind all parents with Grade 7
children to ensure that they collect and submit their
applications to Hyde Park High School as well as following
the GDE online process www.gdeadmissions.gov.za in time.
ADMINISTRATION
We remind all parents to ensure that their school fee
payments are up to date and that EFT payments are clearly
referenced with your account number.
CAREERS EVENING
17 May – Careers Evening for all Gr 11 & 12 pupils and
parents as well as interested Grade 9s’. This event offers
parents and pupils the opportunity to explore over 50
institutions and the courses that they offer. Do not miss out
on this event.
CELL PHONE AND ELECTRONIC DEVICES AT SCHOOL
The school does not accept any responsibility for the loss of
any electronic device brought onto school property - so
please discourage your child from bringing them to school.
Tickets are now on sale at R50,00. Contact
the school office for more information.
We encourage all parents and pupils to ensure that you have
your seat booked. This is a South African first for the
production to be staged in our country, let alone as a school
production and is an energetic, hip-hop infused Latin musical
which was staged on Broadway for three years!
Valentines Ball 2017
This year’s Valentines Ball was awash with lots of glamour and style as the
pupils of Hyde Park High School celebrated this day of love. The event was
opened to Grades 10 to 12 which allowed for a much more social occasion.
The hall was beautifully decorated by the Matric Dance Committee who
worked tirelessly to ensure that everyone felt the romance of the evening.
SPORT

Rugby
On Saturday 11th March the Rugby team travelled to Beaulieu College. It was our first
outing of the season and it showed, as we made some basic errors. We led the game right
up until the last ten minutes of the second half. With more practice and familiarity with
each other this team should acquit itself well during the season. Full time scores were
Beaulieu 25, Hyde Park 22. Well done to Aundre Mutwale, Gareth Wicks, Tsego Jones and
Donovan Styger who put the points up on the scoreboard. The juniors also had their
first game vs Beaulieu and some new talent was discovered. Wednesday 15th March
saw the rugby boys playing against Pecan Wood here at Hyde Park High. The match was
interrupted due to lightning and rain which impacted on the results.
North Area Day will be held at Fourways on 25 March for u16 and 1st team and
both teams will also participate in the Hyde Park Easter Festival from 31 March –
3 April.
Parents and pupils are invited to check the sports calendar to see when matches are
scheduled and are encouraged to support the teams – cheering from the sidelines makes
such a difference to the morale of the players.
Hyde Park High vs Beaulieu match
Cross Country
The Cross Country runners have been hard at work preparing for the 2nd term and we expect that they will once again give the
other schools a good challenge in the season ahead. Hyde Park High is considered a strong contender with excellent runners
in the team.
Girls Tennis
Our first term's tennis league ran very successfully, with only one match being affected by rain. Although we didn't win any
matches there were some nice individual wins in some of the singles matches. We had some enthusiastic new grade 8s join
our team and I would like to encourage all grade 8s and grade 9s to commit to tennis during term 3 and term 4. Thank you to
Snelisiwe Majola for captaining the A and B teams and to Ms. Sambo for her work in managing the teams.
Boys Tennis
What an interesting competitive tennis season we had. The season started off with frustrations, as our first few matches had
to be rescheduled due to rain. Our A-team had a few tough matches but our boys fought right through to the end with a
victory match against Fourways. Four of our boys, Chao-Hong Peng, Savik Misra, Viveshan Naidoo and Mikyle Varathaiah
represented Hyde Park at the Senior Inter High. They showed loyalty and perseverance throughout the day. Overall we came
15th and considering the strength of the schools that participated, we did brilliantly. Well done boys!
Our B-team were ceded in a competitive league, however our boys gave it their all and we are excited to see many new
additions to the B-team as we aim to build strong teams for the following season.
Congratulations to C. Peng who once again qualified for the Gauteng Central u19 team. C. Peng is currently ranked second in
his team. Well done C Peng!
A huge thank you to Mr. Ndlovu, Ms. Richards and Ms. Swanepoel. Without their assistance, this season would have not been
that successful. I look forward to our next season!
Netball
We had a good start to the pre-season with 130 players training for the Jomo league fixtures that start in term 2. The fixtures
will be available on the D6 Communicator as soon as we confirm them. Three of our learners made it to the Jomo regional
trials, J. Gillbert, K.Weeks and T.Thabethe. We are looking forward to the netball season as well as the Easter Festival end of
March.
Water Polo
Water polo started off with a bang this year as Mr Hough handed over the reins of the team to Mr Knoppersen. Mr Hough
continued his support of the team behind the scenes and his help proved to be invaluable to the success of season. We
started the season with our traditional water polo camp and the players got acquainted with our new water polo coach
Dominic Vigliotti. We also appointed Peter Brak who took on the task of coaching the girls team.
Both coaches and players showed tremendous commitment to the sport throughout the term and certainly made the school
proud at our matches with other schools. Special mention needs to go to the captains, Aimy Main and Kelly Pentz for the girls
and Sven Fireson and Jarryd Tearnan for the boys, who proved invaluable in motivating and leading their respective teams.
We played against schools such as Randpark High School, Reddam, and Kingsmead High School and pulled off some very good
results, especially from the girl’s team. As a result of their good performance, the girls team was entered into the prestigious
Reef cup at St Stithians, were they would play some of the best teams in Gauteng. The girls played outstandingly well in the
tournament and we all had a lot of fun at the event. Claudia Potter in particular made us proud this season by not only
representing us provincially, but nationally as well.
It has been a wonderful season for water polo for us at Hyde Park and I hope it builds from strength to strength in seasons to
come.
Table Tennis
Table tennis had a good season so far. We played on the 28th of February against KES. The seniors won 7 – 3 and the juniors
lost by a small margin of 4 – 6. 7 March saw another table tennis match against King David Linksfield where the seniors had a
draw of 5 – 5.
Girls Hockey
On Saturday 11 March the Hyde
Park Girls Hockey team attended
the Beaulieu preseason festival.
Schools we competed against were
Redhill, Glenvista and the Northern
Cape Provincial Team. We drew
against Redhill and Glenvista. The
various players of the matches
were: Jordan Jardine, Jade Jardine
and Kiara Priest-Jones as well as
Leona Muziva and Shannon Parkins.

CULTURAL
Debating
Two of the junior teams spoke in the SACEE league on the 11th March, giving valuable exposure to some debaters who have
never spoken before. Congratulations to Mishka Naidoo who achieved two best speaker awards.
The senior team debated on the 4th March, many of whom had only recently joined debating. Courtney Madziwa received a
best speaker award. They gave it their best, which involved being given an hour to prepare 7 minute speeches on topics
ranging from banning high IQ societies to (controversially) revising schools’ hair regulations.
Chess
Chess is a game of concentration, creativity, memory, patience and focus – an invaluable skill in the training of the mind.
This term, the senior chess team played in the JHB central chess league, beating Jeppe Girls but unfortunately losing the three
other matches (5-3 to Jeppe Boys and 8-0 to SAHETI). Well done to all our players in gaining much needed experience and
our captain Reece Govender for winning the most games so far.
The junior team has seen more success, winning 6 of the 7 matches in the JHB North West league. Particular mention to
Boikie Ledwaba who has won every game aside from one stalemate.
HYDE PARK HIGH – EASTER FESTIVAL APPEAL
**Any parents who can host pupils from Carter High during the Easter Festival from 31 March until 3 April should please

THE 1967 SCHOOL REUNION
School is out ... 50 years later
Picture yourself fifty years after you have matriculated from Hyde Park High School - hard to
imagine!
Last month, at the end of February, a group of the 1967 matriculants came together to celebrate fifty years
out of school. Two functions were held: one on the Friday evening at the Morningside Country Club and the
other, a casual lunch, at the school in the Hyde Out.
The function at the Morningside Country Club was a very special occasion, where people who hadn’t seen
one another since their last reunion, twenty five years ago, were delighted to see their old school pals. Lots
of memories were shared and stories told.
The next day the reunion re-gathered at Hyde Park High School – back on their old school grounds. This
time they were addressed by the headmaster, Mr Vogiatzis who welcomed them back to the school and Mike
Rowse who was the master of ceremonies and one of the organisers. Barbara Bauer, the head girl of 1967
made a speech, Elaine Edwards read the sonnet she had written in matric, David Hill entertained all with
some lovely memories and a good laugh, Chris Ellenberger who travelled from Australia to attend, honoured
the deceased with a minute’s silence. This was followed by a delicious lunch of a spit braai, a selection of
salads, roasted vegetables and dessert. Pam Wolstenholme one of the class members of 1967 made and iced
a delectable cake which everyone raved about. These special touches are what made the reunion all the more
meaningful.
Forty three people attended the reunion. Three came from Australia, two from New Zealand, two from the
UK, three from the USA, and one from Canada. This is a remarkable effort on their part. The 1967, 50 year
reunion was a huge success enjoyed by all that attended.
The matriculants of 1967 also made a very generous donation of over R9 000,00 to the school which was
contributed to by all who attended this special fifty year reunion. Hyde Park High School is very grateful for
their gift.
This goes to show you how important your friendships are at school and the value of giving back to your
Alma Mater. Thank you Matric Class of 1967!
