The hallways are empty and rooms silent as everyone has headed home for
Christmas break. Before they left, however, our roving reporter caught up
with several Brookville School employees to find out what their family
Christmas traditions, holiday wishes and memories are. We hope you enjoy

this brief video as these staff members share their thoughts with you about

Brookville Denied FabLab Grant...However, Experience Fuels our Desire
We are disappointed to notify
everyone that
Brookville Schools did not receive the Northrup
Grumman FabLab Grant that was recently promoted.
Northrup Grumman informed the district of this late

this news. First, as a school district, we were
overwhelmed by the support from across the Miami
Valley in the Facebook voting. We want to thank you, the parents and
community members of Brookville. The extent to which everyone rallied
behind our goal was monumental. Getting out the vote on November 20
became an area wide effort with numerous other school districts and
businesses backing our cause. It was exciting to see so many people

encouraging their families, friends and colleagues to vote for Brookville. We
are most appreciative of the support shown.
Secondly, the energy created by this attempt to gain a grant for STEM
education fueled our desire to provide students with quality instruction. We
are driven by your show of support to see that all children continue to receive
the best education possible, specifically in the areas of STEM and Project
Based Learning.

employees gathered in the
high school cafeteria for the
annual Christmas Breakfast.
This year marked the 60th
time this tradition has taken
place. The guests of honor
each year are our retirees
who return to share their time
and fellowship with our current staff. This year there were over forty former
employees in attendance. Classroom icons such as Margaret Porter
(pictured in the photo above in the red sweater), Mitch Reed, Chuck Gross
and David Fine will be remembered by generations of graduates. Each of
these guests plus many more found their way back to Brookville Schools for
this special morning gathering. A note of interest is that Mrs. Porter, a former
English teacher and librarian for the district, has been in attendance for all 60
of the breakfasts.

For our school district this is an event that started in 1955 and each year is
still greatly anticipated and well attended. It is a wonderful time for today's
staff to reconnect with their retired peers and transition into the holiday break
with friends and colleagues. You can view additional pictures from this year's

Basketball Season is in Full Swing
2015-2016
2016-2017
BHS basketball teams, both boys and girls, are well into their 2015-16
season. The teams have been working hard and fans have enjoyed some
very exciting contests already this year. Both teams have a nice blend of
seniors, veteran players and underclassmen who are getting their first taste
of playing varsity. We wish these two programs the very best as they head
into the thick of their schedules after the holidays.
Boys Basketball
The men's basketball team enters

Mrs. Hollon's Healthy Living and Safe Foods classes used the spirit of the
season to put one of this year's district instructional goals into action.
Teachers have been challenged to increase the amount of project based
learning (PBL) opportunities provided to students. So, as the holiday season
approached Mrs. Hollon divided her classes into groups that were given the
question of how to best construct a holiday gingerbread house.
It is important to note that PBL is
not about teachers delivering the
lesson in a traditional manner and
then having students do a project.
Rather it is about asking students
a rigorous and relevant question to
which they have to create a

project based world. Whether it is
on the job or in our home and
family lives we are constantly working to find answers to whatever project is
at hand.
This practice creates critical thinking, communication and

Staff Spotlight
Our Staff Spotlight segment will return in the January 4, 2016. We look
forward to continuing to introduce you to our staff in the new year.
Where Are They Now?
Brookville Schools are proud of our series "Where Are They Now", which
features profiles of past Brookville High School graduates. These graduates
have responded to brief questions concerning their education or training after
high school, their current occupation and their words of wisdom to the
students in our buildings.
After 21 profiles over the last year, this series is the most popular in our enewsletter. We are taking a brief break during the holiday, but the next profile
will be included in the January 4, 2016 edition of the Blue Connector. Please
check out the archives of our past profiles.
The Giving Tree
For
a
few
years
now,
the
elementary building has put up a
"Giving
Tree".
This
tree
is
decorated with hats and gloves,
most hand made, for boys and girls
to take as needed. This tree is a
project the of "Piecemakers" group
of Community United Methodist
Church. The dedicated individuals
of Piecemakers meet every Thursday and create many handmade items,
including the hats and gloves which adorn the tree. These treasures are
taken off the tree by children who might need a warm pair of mittens or a
hat.
Mrs. Hinds, the principal of the elementary
building, has seen many children wearing the
hand made items, sometimes even an entire
class. The children love picking out their favorite.
Sometimes, a pair of mittens may be taken from
the tree, and the next day, a few new pairs are
returned to share. The children know they can take what they "need", without
any questions and are learning in the process about the power of giving
back.
Brookville students are fortunate to have community outreach programs that
are so involved in our schools and community.
Piecemakers were
previously involved in a project with the Key Club, making quilts for the
homeless with our students. You can read about that project here.

To Sophomore Casey Phillips.
Casey was recently
judged as a top winner in the 15th Annual Families
Matter Essay and Poster Contest.
The contest is
hosted by the Family Services Association and is held in
correlation with the start of national Family Week.
Casey, his family and English teacher Mr. Robert Hope
attended a celebration breakfast to honor winners at the
Mandalay Banquet Center. Casey is receiving awards
from numerous sponsors of the contest.

To our Athletic Trainers for a successful
transition. Current Trainer Vic Billheimer
(on the left) will be leaving for one year to
fulfill his duties in the Navy Reserves.
His replacement is Keenan Kidd who
most recently worked with FranklinMonroe athletes. We wish Vic a safe tour
and sincerely thank him for his service to
our country and we welcome Keenan who has already developed a positive
relationship with our student athletes.

To Junior Cody Cox. Cody recently set a new school
record by making 8, three point shots in a boys'
basketball game.
This came on a night when Cody
scored 31 points in an overtime victory over Dixie.
Congratulations Cody and we hope to see many more
three pointers ahead!
