April Showers… April Math Newsletter Outcomes: o Demonstrate an understanding of fractions Fractions represent part of a whole Describe situations in which fractions are used. Ex: I have a pizza with four equal slices. We ate two slices. What fraction of the pizza did we eat? 2 - The part of the whole 4 - How many equal pieces in the whole o Comparing fractions with the same denominator An understanding that 1 is greater than 1 because you are sharing it with less people. 2 4 Demonstrate an understanding of measuring length (cm, m) (100 cm = 1m) Knowing when to select cm vs. m, estimating length, measuring and recording length, width & height. Helpful games: Treasure Hunt: Find five items in your house that are between 10 cm and 25 cm long. String: The width of your baby finger can be used as a referent to 1 cm. Take five different length strings. Estimate the length of your string, and then measure the actual length with a ruler. Measure: Find different objects around your house to measure. (Fridge, book, pencil, shoe, etc) I Spy: I see an object that is about 5 cm long, what could it be? Designs: How many different designs can you make that are 3 red and 1 yellow? 4 4 Roule, glisse et couvre: Students learned this game in class, the gameboard can be found on the website. You roll two dice, slide them together to make a fraction and cover that fraction on the gameboard. If it is already covered, you lose your turn. Once all the spaces are covered, the person who has covered the most spaces wins. Real life situations: Your grandfather is building you a model car out of wood. What units (cm or m) should he use to measure the parts of the car? Why? Also, please refer to any games on previous newsletters as we are constantly reviewing previous material
