If you use another LMS/electronic learning platform, what are the features of this system that
you find most useful to your teaching?
(9 Responses)
MyMathLab has problems with algorithmically generated values so that for homework
assignments students can generate as many practice problems as they like and for
courses where we do exams on the computer every student has not only scrambled
questions and answers, but different numbers in the problems. Also the homework has
help features “Show Me an Example” and “Help Me Solve This”. The first feature shows
students a completed example with different numbers than their problem; the second
feature asks students to complete a step at a time and offering immediate feedback after
each intermediate step.
generates and grades on line homework
I use LiveText, primarily because of it's sophisticated rubric-based assessment and
reporting system. This is a feature sorely lacking in Angel.
The Mathematics faculty use various Learning Management Systems, including
CourseCompass/MyMathLab and WebAssign. I have a preference for
CourseCompass/MyMathLab. The CourseCompass portion of the system is, I believe,
the same as Blackboard. The MyMathLab portion of the system allows me to very easily
assign mathematical homework assignments and quizzes. The problems range in
difficulty, and can be multiple-choice and/or short answer in format. In other words, the
system is able to grade mathematical work, as opposed to having all problems be in
multiple-choice format. Additionally, the problems automatically regenerate so that a
student can practice multiple examples of the same type of problem. (NOTE: When
mathematical problems are static, as is the case with many Learning Management
Systems, students just learn to memorize the answers!) I do not know if MyMathLab can
be added into a more generic Learning Management System, but if it could, that would
be the ideal scenerio!
I do not and I believe they interfere with actual teaching.
I use both WebAssign and MyMathLab. Since I am a math teacher, I look for a platform
that has the ability to upload a question bank from the textbook publisher. I also look for
an easy way to type math questions that can be randomized for each student.
Attend FSU and use Blackboard. I find that it is organized much better and easier to
navigate than Angel. The few times I've needed to use Angel I notice it is more difficult
to navigate.

Integrated homework and quiz system from book publisher
The above chart represents users who do not use ANGEL.
If no, please explain:

ANGEL is challenging to interface with: excess buttons/options often results in
quizzes/folders/docs not opening; ANGEL does not function properly on my tablet,
making working from home or at a conference impossible at times; exam security is
moderate at best -- I have had subjective reports of students "getting around the system;"
face-to-face interactions are not possible, leaving me to use Skype.
There are somethings that I want to give access to people, not just those in my class; as
such, I often create regular html based websites for many of many courses on
ruby.fgcu.edu, sometimes in addition to the ANGEL sites, sometimes instead of ANGEL
pages.
ANGEL is time consuming. For instance, if you have set up your assignments prior to
entering quizzes or dropboxes you must go back to assignments and check the preferred
grading method, even if you set the dropbox to the specific assignment. You cannot open
a student document and grade it with comments. The document must be downloaded,
then graded, saved and uploaded to send back to the student.
Some files are too big to upload to ANGEL. I would like more flexibility with discussion
forums. For example, I would like have team discussions, then open them to the entire
class.
We have made some adaptions of things in Soft Chalk for HUM2510.
The answer is by and large yes but there are few things it could do better in terms of
being able to exchange and post large video or digital or files. I would like to be able to
use Angel more for videos in my class. Also fine that the grading and testing area is
sometimes difficult to navigate; especially to upload a large number of items to the test
bank. It would be nice if test banks with the materials we use could more easily be
transferred. Finally, when archiving and saving courses/materials, it is impossible to find
something because they change the title.
The system is great, but I know I could get even more out of it. I am reluctant to commit
the time to learning more since the system will be phased out and then I will have to
learn a completely new system. Sometimes I feel it would be easier to construct my own,
private, web site and direct students to it.
Setting up assignments, gradebook, and assessments is not user friendly and rarely
provides the security to properly utilize the environment for teaching purposes.
No stats on individual assignments. Can't update syllabus easily. Turn-it-in- grademark
would be nice, even though I know this is not an Angel-specific issue.
Can be improved
Only use Angel with committees
It does, really (there should be a "sort of" button). I wish Angel was more flexible or user
friendly with certain tools (gradebook, loading videos/images, toggling between pages).
But, I have worked with WebCT and Blackboard at other institutions, and honeslty, I
prefer Angel.
Slow working. If a student posts and assignment, I sometimes do not get it for 2 days.
I wish we could incorporate our clicker grade data into ANGEL.
Although ANGEL is satisfactory with respect to many teaching aspects, there are areas
(as noted below) in which performance could be improved.
I have worked with ANGEL, WebCT, Blackboard, Moodle and eCollege currently and
throughout the last two years. Angel puts them all to shame, it is by far the best LMS
while Moodle is by far the worst followed by eCollege from an instructor's standpoint.
Please don't MOODLE me!!!
Its hard to use- there is a learning curve that is not easy It can probably do more things
than I need, I just don't have the time to learn them. It seems to do "odd" things every
once in a while.
Rubrics should be able to be utilized and produce automatically scored grades that are
placed in the gradebook immediately after rubric is completed for all discussions,
assignements and graded materials for the course- your system is not set up this way.
Am saying no to qualify this question. Our department used the old Banner users course
for those of us new to the department. So that was very helpful when I started at FGCU
three years ago. If the business related departments supporting FGCU could use the
system to provide staff training on topics for our job, that would be useful. Will answer
the following questions related to this concept if we could use an LMS for us business
users...
Need finger granularity on mapping to learning outcomes, ability to summarize rubric
scores by row.
Ugly presentation, hard to add media
Not completely NO, and mostly Yes, but would like to add video streaming or ebook
functionality. Changing graphics used for folders, etc.
I just have to keep learning more about the features and to maximize all Angel can offer.
There are some features of ANGEL I would use if they had more flexibility of setup and
delivery (e.g., the blog and wiki functions). Overall, though, ANGEL can do most of the
things I need it to do.
We are required to have student submit documents to Livetext for accreditation. This is a
college wide thing. Apparently ANGEl does not provide the rubic and data collection we
need for accrediting bodies, so we must duplicate our grading and student submissions of
work.
We curently use Live Text in addition to Angel in order to score rubrics that can be
stored and the data accessed for program improvement. I would like to be able to
perform all of our duties using one program.
The email portion of it is "clunky" and cumbersome to use. It should integrate with our
existing email. Too much of a pain and waste of time to keep switching back and forth
from FGCU to Angel email.
It's great except for the blogging feature.
For the most part it does; however, there are a few stumbling blocks now and then, such
as file-size limits.
Yes, but it has some annoyances. This semester, it is responding very slow, especially
from off campus. It takes me three-four times longer waiting for email to load, and
responding to email in particular.
It does but I would like it to do more because I do most of my teaching online.
I almost want to say yes but it does not fulfill my teaching needs completely, for
example, it has very limited capacity for uploading files.
Would be nice.... I would like an online learning system to include a built in video
conferencing capability and to have a built in system for recording video content. What I
really really need... I need to be able to extract PDF files or some other similar type of
electronic file of surveys the students complete. The electronic document needs to show
the original survey questions along with all of an individual student's answers. Then I
would like the system to be able sort and store surveys and submitted assignments from
several different courses by student name within my user group. I would also love to be
able to send out a survey to an intern employer and then have the results sent back to the
e learning system where they could be stored in files organized by student name. These
capabilities would help me manage four separate internship courses, over a four year
time period, for each of the approximately 120 students in our program. This is
important for my ability to meet the file keeping/reporting requirements of our
accrediting body, the PGA of America.
Somewhat would be more accurate; there are some functionalities that are not available.
Yes and No. Some things are good, but there are other things that would be helpful.
I do not primarily use Angel for advising, but I do use Angel when I teach. For advising,
I hope to use Angel to create an online student orientation for those students who cannot
come to campus.
ANGEL does not quite fulfill what I need. It probably could better meet my needs if I
used a cartridge within ANGEL for my virtual class. For my non-virtual classes,
ANGEL serves as a depository of files to supplement in-class lecture and a place to post
grades.
Adequate for how I am currently using it. However, there are technical issues that have
arisen.
For the physics classes, there is a strong need for algorithmic problem solving
capabilities. ANGEL's algorithmic problem tool is pretty user-friendly, but in the physics
and astronomy group, the LON-CAPA system is already in place and locally supported
with a large repository of user-generated problems that instructors can easily draw from
to build their assignments.
Find it difficult to use the rubrics to collect data for assessments. The system to
download papers seems cumbersome. Also I can not access parts of Angel on my Ipad.
There are too many times when students have issues with Angel...either the system is
slow...which affects timed submissions; does not record their submissions at all (nor
does it show the student was logged in); and requires students to retype all of their
correct answers when submitting an assignment after the first submission; AND the
latest upgrades have made it more difficult to set up quizzes/homework (made it too
technical).
Terrible browser support; outdated interface; no support for YouTube/Vimeo
I would like to be able to see/print small pictures of the students along with their names.
I've used this before at another university (they had Blackboard) and found it very
practical for remembering my students names. The picture to be used could be the one
from their student ID. Despite having large classes, it is very important for us to be able
to remember our students' names; they value this tremendously.
No integration between email system and other email systems (e.g., cannot copy external
users on communications); no integration between attendance and gradebook; too often
folders disapper
I have to say no in order to explain that I am a new user and still learning the system.
There do appear to be some limitations for my full range of LMS needs, registrations,
confirmations, calendaring,etc.
I don't prefer, at the moment, to have everything online. It seems Angel COULD do that,
but I'm new to FGCU and prefer to wait until its replacement to commit to a LMS for
most things. I currently use my own website for course documents, Angel for Turnitin
only, and LON-CAPA for online homework. I do not give online quizzes or exams.
Although, I stated YES, there are limitations to ANGEL that I don't care for. It's bulky,
meaning too many steps required for simple tasks, editing screens are too small, etc.
Angel is not used in the Testing Center to teach but to delivery secure testing.
Yes, but the discussion boards are very difficult to navigate and explore when the class is
large.
Would like to have better formats for wikis and blogs.
Had trouble uploading a large file from a student one time. Other than that fine.

See comments above.
As far as I know (and I could be wrong), students can not sign up (or be signed up) for
automatic updates of the ANGEL pages for a course. It would be a nice but not critical
addition.
Haven't used audio or video
I would like to have an interactive session available for students to have a live chat like
the capabilities of Adobe Connect.
Some file types are easy to upload, but angel treats them differently. like if I up load a
text file, it upload, easily, but Angel will display it and not just download it. The Auto
Download option cant be turned off. Scheduled release of content has multiple places
you have to set the dates. Needs a single place. It would be nice if the system would
update on any change and not just if I find the "Notify check box". The calendar is only
in angel and would be nice if they could import it into the calendar for student email.
The scheduled release of content did not always work correctly within ANGEL.
As mentioned earlier, ANGEL is not user friendly in terms of grading student
documents. Uploading media, for instance a PREZI rather than powerpoint is next to
impossible. This has limited what I do in class because I would like to provide access to
all the course info in one place and since ANGEL does not interface with PREZI I do not
use PREZI even though I prefer it to PowerPoint.
Syllabi should be a "wizard" automatically updating and inserting all relevant and
required university and college policies.
Some files are too big to upload. Sometimes when media or other resources are uploaded
the screen is smaller. I do not use wikis currently.
I'm not sure about media; I have only used it sparingly.
I don't use Blog or Wikis or the Automation functions.
THe upload of some media is slow in ANGEL. I would like to link to a repository of
resources for students across courses, and not have to upload them to each course.
Maybe I just don't know how to do this in ANGEL!
Videos are often difficult to embed in Angel. Angel email does not work well on Mac
Safari and I have to use FireFox (not a big deal).
I don't use them
see above.
Any prospective LMS should have a more intuitive way to post links of interest for
students. It should mirror the way that users post status updates in Facebook, with a link
and a thumbnail. Uploading multiple files using drag and drop has never worked
properly for me. It will not batch upload. Instead, it will upload the first file only, prompt
for a name, and then ignore the rest. The gradebook cannot compare with the
functionality of an excel spreadsheet for calculating grades with lookup functions (etc.).
Direct import of excel sheets (with maintenance of formulas and references) into a
gradebook would be ideal. Any prospective LMS should also have near 100% crossbrowser and platform compatability. ANGEL's lack of email functionality in Chrome is
a glaring issue.
Some answers cannot be answered satisfied or not satisfied as I do not use this tool.
Sometimes uploads are combursome or run into difficulty. May not be due to the
platform but it could be more user friendly in this are.. Blogs, wikis and automation are
not being used.
Wasn't sure what to answer for several of these since I haven't used them all but might
want to. Not sure what "notifying students of updates" and "automation" items are. I said
not satisfied but I just haven't used them. Resources and links I have not found to be
useful; I put those into Lessons where they belong in the sequence, though I guess there
could be cases where general resources would apply. The general interface could be
more intuitive; students have to be taught to look for content in Lessons.
I wish the blog tool was fancier. I wish I knew how to automate more stuff. I learn new
things every year.
I am not using blog, wiki, or automation. Some media upload, reousrces or links do not
always work. Students complain not being able to download these.
the syllabus tool is clunky, so I always delete it and post my syllabus under Lessons. I
have not attempted the blog and wiki tools because of warnings from others that Angel's
version of these is inadequate.
I don't use the blog, the Wiki tool is pretty clunky and has no formatting of the text.
Although I have never used them, I've been told to stay away from blogs and wikis in
ANGEL. I have no idea what is meant by Automation so I left it blank.
Uploading media content in Angel is very tricky. Embedding the content requires use of
HTML, which can cause errors within the system. The options that Angel includes for
videos or images are not categorized and the search function returns irrelevant results.
This is a very important feature for me, as I frequently make video lectures and content.
You should have had a third column in each of these: "Didn't use" or "Not interested"
One frequent issue in current system. File sizes and submission of big files.
I feel that Angel doesn't offer sufficient ability to notify students when there are updates.
I also don't like that you have to open the links menu (via the plus sign) in order to see
the links -- that seems like an unnecessary step.
No opinion on those I don't use.
Media updloads are clunky at best, often don't work with IE and/or Firefox. Location of
extra resources for a course is convoluted; defficult for faculty to store and find. Updates
are too slow, although I appreciate not making major changes during a semester or
grading periods!
Would like to learn more about this
I'd love to see more intergration of blog and wiki and richer possibiliies with both. I
think the automated functions could be much easier to use.
Size limitations of student submissions an issue, placement variations for pictures, links,
etc very limited, wiki is not effective
There is no way to upload videos and other media that are significant. At least, not that I
can figure out. The Wiki is great, I use it extensively but uploads are limited there as
well.
Items not checkes as satisfied or not satisfied are not applicable.
I have two parts to my syllabus, my "rules" and my schedule. I would like to be able to
upload several documents under the Syllabus heading. I would like to be able to change
the word from "syllabus" so something else. Scheduling the release of content is nice but
complicated. I have no idea how to make this easier.
Typically, releases seem to occur extremely close to the start and finish of a semester. If
there were a way to plan during night hours only and still have access during the day,
that might be better.
Students do not forward there ANGEL mail to other accounts and if they don't, they have
to check ANGEL e-mail to get my message. I usually E-mail from Gulfline if I want to
reach them in a timely fashion.
N/A.
Can't copy word document place them in e-mail...no one will tell you that I feel that
media can be uploaded without restrictions Scheduled release,,,,somewhere there's
mouse in the program that changes dates! Updates? ther is not a way to notify students of
updates
My lecture classes are subdivided into lab sessions. Because I can only display one
syllabus I cannot combine different lab sessions on Angel.
Not simple enough to do many things
Not available or too cumbersome to use. Speed is essential.
Would have linked a "don't know" option as my answer to some of these features.
I had a terrible time trying to upload my own videos.
need capability to stream video and upload larger files
I teach a course in Media and Culture and use over a gigabyte of media. I've standardized
on Flash and use a private channel of YouTube. Angel does not offer the transcoding
feature of YouTube, plus the response time is very slow compared to YouTube. I expect
I will continue using YouTube with any LMS for these reasons.
My biggest problem with ANGEL as I use it now is the limit on file sizes that can be
attached to messages/graded drop box items/etc. I don't see any reason why I shouldn't
be able to send a 2-7 MB MP3 file via ANGEL. I would love for students to be able to
add their own individual blogs to our LMS, with flexibility for personalization. The wiki
function is very rudimentary, so something more powerful would be more useful.
A column should be included for people to select Not applicable if the function is not
used. Otherwise people make select satisfied with a function but they have never used it.
The tokens and angent functions are not as user friendly as other systems I have been
exposed to. The amount of time it takes to make automatic reminder emails and set it up
is too long.
For the blog feature, the time line gets confusing and lost. There is limited editing.
The syllabus function does not meet my requirements, that is, I need to include about 25
separate items of information inclusive of tables and links and this is problematic in the
syllabus function as it now exists. The blog and wiki functions are too limited. Perhaps
they do not need to be in Angel???
I would like for students to be able to upload larger videos and media assignments but
either it is too big for Anfgel or we have to ask Angel to allow for larger files.
I have used many different LMS and I have not liked any of their built-in syllabus
editors. For me it is just easier to upload a word document as the syllabus.
ANGEL is slow generally. When uploading, for instance, it takes forever. When one
looks at the userfriendlyness of IPod touch and IPhones, you wonder what decade
learning platforms like ANGEL, Blackboard, and WebCT are in.
too many steps to upload a doc - sometimes students miss second part, then don't get to
receive credit for an assignment, as they did not realize that they did not turn in their
paper when it was due
Size limits and I don't know that there is a way to "notify students of updates" though
that could just be my ignorance.
STudents have a limit to the size of uploads and media files are too large. The wiki is
just a poor example of a wiki, so I use Wikispaces instead. I have to add announcements
and send out emails to notify students of changes to the website in terms of course
updates. They don't look at the "what's new" for this type of change.
The current blog and wiki functionality are weak. I use blogger and google docs for my
wikis. My students have had trouble opening large media files. I now upload my lectures
to YouTube or use Softchalk for any media related stuff. I would like the function that
allows students to enter their preferred email address for notifications since many don't
check their Eagle mail often. I have not used the tokens, agents, and variables, so I really
can't say if I am satisfied with them or not. They seem difficult to set up but maybe that's
me.
limited file size.
ANGEL does not seem to interface in an intuitive way with the user. A system with
more icons would
I was unable to 'deselect' my answers. I use ANGEL tyo uplaod files and agenda and
have used it for a discussion forum.
The features not marked are the ones I have not learned how to use yet.
My main reason for the "not satisfied" responses is that Angel often requires a lot of
backtracking and repetition. So I have "ease of use" and navigation issues.
The dates are not automatically visible to the students. Students have requested
notification thru Knights mail; they say they don't always see Angel mail. A link
between the 2 mail systems would be great.
I answered not satisfied with "Automation," because I'm assuming the calendar on Angel
falls under that category. I would prefer the course calendars sync with the students'
personal calendar on Angel, so that all due dates and other important dates for all of their
courses are synced on one calendar. Then they'd be more apt to view it. I did not post
due dates on my Angel course calendar this semester because I was told it is not synced
with students' calendars.
I don't use all of those items, some because they are too complicated, some because they
don't work well.
It is very cumbersome to upload files to Angel. It sometimes take multiple attempts.
Sending email through Angel is also a chore.
The media portion of ANGEL does not seem to be well integrated into the front page of
the course. I have used the blog tools in ANGEL and am not that impressed. I am not
sure what ANGEL has in terms of notifying students of updates.
When I create links, there is space for me to leave a description of the link. However,
that appears to just be for my benefit; I can't figure out how to display that information
where my students or anyone else can see it.
I don't necessarily use the syllabus function to download syllabus. If I forget to turn it off
I may end up with an old syllabus online-- really probably more a user problem.
Most of the above I do not use
I would like the system to email students (from ANGEL) whenever announcements are
posted on the course sit.
Wiki tool is confusing.
Media: I know there are restrictions/limitations, so I would like to see those improve
next time around.
A minor but pet peeve is the "links" feature in Angel autocollapses into a single lineheight "+" button, hiding the links. I suppose I could edit a document in Angel that
contains the links, but I usually feel like I'm working AGAINST the system, not within
it.
Uploading videos is often difficult through Angel. The blogging tool is not as good as
others available online.
The extent to which I responded not satisfied is due to my current knowledge. We need a
calendaring/registration system for internal development that goes deeper than our
current registration site.
The UPLOAD is important, but I want to have SEAMLESS uploading AND
downloading of any grades in excel (CSV) format.
Needs to be more user-friendly for our students.
The process of settings associated with a timed assignment are cumbersome at best.
Secure Browser functionality is the feature that the Testing Center is most interested on.
My lack of satisfaction is almost always with the difficulty of use for various functions.
It often requires more effort to set up and maintain certain features than is worthwhile.
It is difficult to upload media.
All uploads are single...would like multiple file upload or windows driven. Blog and
Wiki tools are not the best - I don't currently use them for that reason.
About half of the time I set up the syllabus section the file will not show up as intended
even though the settings are identical to another section where the syllabus works. Being
able to control whether or not a page would be viewable when linked in Angel would be
nice. All of my youtube links won't function, so students must copy & paste web
addresses.
For the following student assignment related ANGEL features, identify, whether or
not the feature is important to you in an LMS and whether or not you are satisfied

Equation Editor is not clear to me, ALTHOUGH I haven't tried it very much. The
choices for the Gradebook on ANGEL are not clear early on , even with extensive help
files (which are VERY BAD when trying to search for something). I would like a little
more flexibility with regard to entering grades, too.
Automatic grading. This may be more with the Assesment section, but importing
questions only partially works. Setting up the grading on the assignments defaults to
manual and I have to go into the assignment and change it in the settings. Its very
cumbersome to set up the assesements if you want to apply a set of options. If you
randomize the answers, it does not seem to keep the correct answer with the newly
randomized answers in the question. You should have included a "Not Used" option in
the two columns. I think surveys are important, but have not used them in Angel. The
gradebook is ok, but importing from other systems is painful. It would be nice to have
more control over how it is viewed, exported, and looks.
I haven't figured out how to set special parameters for invidual students while the
module is still active for other students. For example, I have a student in my online
course who was in the hospital for the first 3 weeks of class, and I need to set up a
special schedule for her that overlaps with other due dates. I can't set it up ahead, so will
have to remember to do it each week. (Maybe there is a way to do this, but I can't find
it.) The equation editor is not intuitive and no instructions are provided. Attendance is
not tied to the gradebook.
I find myself regrading quizzes often, in particular due to small error which are not
captured in the ANGEL rules (contains...) I have not found a way to set time for an
individual student, perhaps there is a method in ANGEL but I am not aware of it. What
equation editor? The rubrics function is helpful , however it is awkward to set up and
does not fit directly with many of the standard rubrics we use.
I would like the gradebook to link to Gulfline to report grades at the end of the term. I
seldom set time limits, so I don't know about parameters for individual students. When
some student work is submitted to Turnitin, it is reformatted so that I can't understand
the work.
It is not easy to use.
Sometimes a student sends a paper in and can't access Dropbox. It would be nice to be
able to upload the paper for the student and have it linked to the gradebook.
Would like to see specific item responses, but again maybe ANGEL does and I don't
know how.
Special parameters for individual students (i.e. students of accommodation) rarely work
correctly. Sometimes the quizzes do not show up, other times (same settings) they do
not. I have had issues with this for several years. The gradebook seems to use strange
methods for calculating averages. Often the average for a type of assignment (i.e. quiz) is
incorrect and different from when calculated manually. I have had grades disappear
before as well. Angel is not user friendly, does not provide adequate security for
assessments, and does not protect grades.
See above.
Cumbersome . Would be easier if one could grade in the submission page and automatic
transpose to the gradebook. Setting up that mechanism is difficult, at times confusing
It is difficult to see precisely what students are doing in angel. I can see when they
logged in but to see if they accessed an item is either difficult or has so much data it is
hard to know what they did.
If I didn't answer it was because it doesn't apply or I didn't know what it was or I haven't
personally used it. I have never used Rubrics except as paper standards for grading. I am
not sure how they work in Angel or why one would want that as a feature in the LMS.
For student tracking, a lot of faculty find that feature hard to use. I use it and like it but it
could be more intuitive and better-designed.
I'm tech savvy and have taught myself a lot on ANGEL. I have great tutorial support in
my department and yet I'll never reach the end of what it can do. I'll find I've done
something the long way ...
Gradebook definitely can improve. Rubrics, extra time parameters are difficult to setup.
Automatic grading usually works, but gradebook needs improvement.
I'd like to be able to use rubrics in grading discussions. The new gradebook feature is
difficult to navigate. While the categories and assignments features are helpful, I have
trouble entering grades
Rubrics are not analyzed across the entire class. Their rubrics are fine, but aren't very
well integrated.
I left items blank above for one of two reasons: 1. I don't use it 2. I don't know what it is.
The feedback/comments feature can be pretty awkward in Angel. It frequently tells me
that I have exceeded the number of available characters, when I definitely have not.
Again, to be fair, I think a third option is needed as above.
TIme between student postinga snd faculty recieving of posting
I cannot answer to some items that I do not use. I don't know if there is a more user
friendly grading system for on line courses but found Angel challenging.
I use randominzation of answer options, rather than randomization of the actual
questions.
Assignments and quizzes in general- interface is not intuitive. Difficult, for example to
incorporate ddffierent questions types into one assessment. I can't understand how to
record attendance. Dropbox needs larger file size for students. Gradebook portrayal is
too complex.
Some of these not able to answer.
Gradebook in ANGEL is a bit difficult to use. It has too many parameter and is just not
simplified enough for the average Joe.
The automated numbering in the rubrics throws students off. I'd love to just create one
drop box.
Turnitin - I still have to create all new drop boxes every semester. Gradebook - while this
is a necessary function, it would be nice it it had additional features and/or could be
linked directly to electronic assignments from the course textbook. I am having to
manually enter these at the end of every semester.
I do not use the functions and am therefore unaware of their need.
N/A if assessing based on using a system for Staff related.
Dropbox has changed and before it was easier to use
I should be able to record more than one attendance per day if students have their lecture
and lab session on the same day.
Ned to summarize rubrics by row. Need to report on student performance by learning
objective
Cumbersome.
Needed an option to select "don't know" or a "don't use" to provide full disclosure.
I do not like how you can't do any statistical analysis of your grades in Angel.
I use essay questions, so the standardized testing tools of LMS are not useful to me
would like a matching feature with a reordering questions option. surveys too difficult to
use...I still fall back to surveymonkey.com
There are some inconveniencing bugs with the Turnitin drop box integration
(automatically creating a new category in the gradebook, not being able to assign grades
via Turnitin that appear in the gradebook, not being able to provide feedback via
ANGEL message like you can with a regular ANGEL drop box, etc.).
Angel seems to have trouble rendering MathML properly. It would be very helpful to
have a more sophisticated equation editor and rendering (if there is something that could
render ordinary LaTeX code that would be ideal)
The reports for the different functions are not user friendly and look like a novice
computer programmer set them up. I used Blackboard for many years before using
ANGEL and found the reporting of information was comprehensive and easy to follow
(this was before Blackboard re-vamped to the current version). The automatic grading
sometimes does not work properly and many times after entering grades, I have to go
back to the gradebook to get them to load into the gradebook -- this is such a waste of
time.
I would like for our rubrics to be able to be scored on Angel and that the data for the whl
college can be kept there and pulled up in different ways to help with program
improvement like live text does for us.
I would like to have attendance automatically recorded in Angel, possibly through
synching with a clicker system. I'm not sure if that is possible. The gradebook in
ANGEL is very convoluted. You have multiple areas that you can make changes to
individual assignments and or categories, so if you change one you have to remember to
hunt down all of the other areas and change them too. For me, this is the number one
area that ANGEL fails and the next LMS needs to be improved, streamline and increase
user-friendliness.
The grading and gradebook issues are the same: sometimes it seems confusing to
perform some functions, such as weighting certain categories. As for surveys, I don't
think there are any in Angel.
The rubric should allow me to enter the number of points for an item rather than the
percentages.
The only thing I would like the grading book to do is to include the grading rubric with
the total score. Right now, the students have to go back into the drop box and view the
completed rubric to see the breakdown of the points. I don't think many of them do that.
They view their total score and then complain that you don't give comprehensive
feedback on their assignments. It has been awhile since I have used the survey feature in
Angel but I think it only allows you to have a maximum of 5 distractors. I would like a
survey function like checkbox or surveymonkey. The rubric feature is awesome but I
would like them to have the completed rubric emailed to the students in addition to the
total score.
I prefer to score with points over percentages and at times, ANGEL reverts back to
percentages when I don't want it to view.
Only put not satisfied...b.c not applicable was not available. I have not used some
features so I could not comment on my satisfaction with them.
The features not marked are the ones I have not learned how to use yet.
My main reason for the "not satisfied" responses is that Angel often requires a lot of
backtracking and repetition. So I have "ease of use" and navigation issues. I think the
gradebook display format is unwieldy. And setting special parameters for individual
students - as far as I know - doesn't exist
It appears that I can't set special parameters (eg extra time, reopen) for individual
students. On the matching questions, both the selection and the questions are
randomized; I would like to be able to select one or the other or both. Linking the
gradebook to the submission of final grades would be a real time saver.
I'm not sure what Turnitin Intergation is. In the fields for "Satisfaction with the feature in
ANGEL," I only answered for features I am familiar with.
Many of the functions in ANGEL (even some that I noted as "Satisfied") are not very
intuitive to the instructor and are difficult to implement within ANGEL.
I have had issues with turnitin integration and the ability to download and subseuntly
grade papers. Apparently there are issues with the use of IE since some of these issues
(but not all have been addressed by using firefox). If IE is a supported product in use at
the University, I would expect the software to work with it. Since this is my first year
using Angel, I am not familiar with some of the capabilities listed above and how they
either work or don;t work. I have also had some issues identified by students taking the
exam that have not been fully resolved. ( not sure if these are real technical issues or
simply user issues). In any new system, there needs to be proper tracking of the
processes so that technical issues (dropped lines, etc) can be properly identified, reported
and acted on.) There are a number of process related issues regarding how certain
capabilities such as turnitin are performed and how grading is integrated. Enhanced
report writing capabilities would also be important in a new product. Simple thinks such
as producing a team roster with email addresses ( and not have a host of other fields
present) would be helpful. Being able to select which fields to report ( grades, etc) from
a generalized reporting capability would also be a nice feature to have.
The ANGEL gradebook mostly works for me, but I have one major problem with it:
There isn't a way to tell it to give each assignment equal weight within a given category
of assignments unless each assignment has the same point value. For example, each of
my homework assignments has a different point value, but the ONLY way I can tell
ANGEL to give each homework equal weight is to first calculate each student's
percentage score on the homework and then manually enter the percentage into ANGEL.
See notes above
Using reports is annoying because of how the student names are listed...you always have
to click next to see all of your students. Also, when looking at submissions, it'd be nice
that once you sorted the data, it would stay sorted instead of constantly going back to the
default. VERY annoying.
I would like to see uin's for students as well as their names, as I have an undergrad TA
and they cannot see the student names. In general there does not seem to be mapping to
Gulfline, I am not sure if this can be changed with new LMS.
See above. All those areas of dissatisfaction refer to confusing instructions or lack of
flexiblity.
Extra time: it might be me, but I find it tedious sometime to open up folders early for
students (if they were to be out of town, for example), and then I have to go back in and
reopen folders for the general class when the time comes. This could be, however, my
own ignorance! Variety of questions: I like the variety, but I find them incredibly
confusing to edit once complete or to change the type of question. Again, could be me.
Gradebook: is there any way to not have the overall grade reflected but still give students
access to their individual grades? Oftentimes, I have students who look at that and then
come to me stating I'm too tough because the overall grade (for each category) is so low.
I then have to explain that it is skewed due to zeros I have to enter for students who
didn't complete the assignment.
How can a gradebook not have "excused" as a grade? Leaving the grade blank doesn't
cut it, since that becomes confused with "no grade" late it the term. Also, I hate the
inability to give INDIVIDUAL extensions in Angel.
I would like to see the Grading feature as part of Turnitin. It is confusing to students to
have to use TWO dropboxes for assignments.
When I used the dropbox for assignment submission, many students seemed to have
technical problems (the website did not let them upload the material, etc.) Maybe I just
don't know how, but I wish you can print out attendance sheet from the beginning of the
semester until the end of the semester in a one sheet. I have tried to use Gradebook, but
seems to me hard to set it up for your own customized way.
it would be nice if if was linked to our schedule to automatically provide an attendance
sheet
Again, limited knowledge.
I can't comment on Angel's performance on most of these, as I have not tried them. For
any online assignments, the new LMS would have to beat LON-CAPA for physics
content and flexibility.
turnitin has not been working so well of late for me in ANGEL
If we cannot use the Grademark function in Turnitin, grading becomes double work if
using a rubric. Many of the assignments in the COE require rubrics.
See my response above.
Don't really use like this
Angel will not let you write a comment to explain why a student was exempt (has no
grade) on an assignment. When I want to give students extra time on an assignment, the
only way I know how to do it in ANGEL is to reopen the assignment to the whole class
after closing it briefly.
To incorporate greek symbols I have to copy and paste from Word since I cannot add
these symbols in Angel. Also the ability to set parameters for an individual student
would solve several slightly tearful moments. "I had a (insert valid excuse) and couldn't
take the quiz on time." I don't use the attendance feature and don't really know how it
works. The reports my lab students submit often include graphs and charts. When they
submit their report through Turnitin, students cannot see the graphs and charts in the
receipts so email frantically at midnight hoping not to fail the report. If the graphs
(copied into Word documents from Excel) could be visible to students' receipts as they
appear on the final copy, this would save students worry and myself many unnecessary
emails.

Not sure if it applies, but it would be nice to have a LMS in which the librarian, as a
course mentor, would be able to share learning objects easier. For example, I am the
liason to the Comp Classes and our Information Literacy Librarian shared the directions
on how to upload the pretest posttest for the Information Literacy (Skunk Ape) Tutorial
to the classes, but it was difficult for the instructors to do themselves. Our IL librarian
ended up doing each class one by one.
I would like the calendar to synchronize with other calendars (e.g. google, outlook).
Discussion forums could be more dynamic and interactive. Peer-review process is
challenging to "over-see" as a faculty member -- time intensive and awkward interface.
I have been unsuccessful using the chat room function. This is something of great
interest to me since students are in the field completing internship requirements.
This entire section seems archaic in Angel.
I am not aware of how to do any of the items marked "not satisfied" on ANGEL. I have
found many of my students are using tools such as Google Docs for file sharing because
ANGEL is too limited and does not provide for ease of editing.
As I stated in answering an earlier question, I would like to be able to change the type of
discussion forum after students have submitted work.
Would like to have on-line office hours using live chat but found that I couldn't open up
two courses at a time to do this.
These are some of the features I cannot figure out yet.
have not used any of the above tools
I haven't used any of these features and/or am not certain what they all refer to.
A shared calendar that we can really use is essential. I can see chat rooms for on-line
courses being extraordinarily useful. Peer review ... a must.
Most of these are not possible or difficult to do w/ current ANGEL
Giving different assignments to different groups requires different entries in the grade
book, causing confusion with the students
Again, I know what these things are but I use them rarely.
Sharing files sometimes do not have the ability to create your own shells rather as
compared to blackboard and ecollege
I only use teams in order to reset a test for a student.
You need a respnse in this survey for don't use, in Satsified with ANGEL.
For the calendar it would be nice if certain items could be applied to all calendars for a
particular semester (e.g. office hours, holidays ,etc). For file sharing the ability to edit
files (i.e. grade and comment) online without having to download and then re-upload
would be excellent.
I have worked with ANGEL, WebCT, Blackboard, Moodle and eCollege currently and
throughout the last two years. Angel puts them all to shame, it is by far the best LMS
while Moodle is by far the worst followed by eCollege from an instructor's standpoint.

Haven't used the others, but might.
N/A.
Should be able to use rubric tool for peer review
Again, the file size limit is inhibiting.
Advanced peer review systems exist. Google documents is more useful for peer reviews
than ANGEL current is. Right now ANGEL is useful for sharing files which may contain
peer reviews, but as far as actually having a peer review function, I am not aware of it. I
use Adobe Connect for live chats which is not part of ANGEL. A video conferencing or
just chat rooms within ANGEL with video options would be helpful (with recording
options).
Discussion Board needs to be more flexible to give student grading.
I don't think Angel offers these things.
I have never used the peer review. Didn't know we had one. I'll check it out as I think it
would be helpful.
I am generally satisfied with the team features. However, it would be great to integrate
Google docs in Angel. Right now, for peer edits for my professional writing class, they
are reviewing the person whose paper is under them in the drop box. I would like a more
collaborative way to do peer edits in Angel like I have the students do with Google docs.
The features not marked are the ones I have not learned how to use yet.
I haven't used these funtionalities yet however, I would like that flexibility in the future.
Should have N/A if you didn't use items
Can do those things in Angel, but it is complicated. Further, frequent upgrades change
the way things are done, so make it difficult to keep up with availability.
See comment above.
not using the other features. ( I think having a few more response options such as don't
use or don;t know might have been helpful).
Inconvenient to set up & maintain
Since I just started using them, I can't answer at this point how well Angel does.
I don't use the above
Difficult to get clear easy consice and relevant information on hwo to do something new
in Angel which makes it difficult to implement new stuff -- remember, please remember,
we (instructors) are not nor do we want to be expert in software use -- we are just users
of the tools that help us to fulfill our primary mission which is to impart information and
perspective and skills
See above.
I don't use the shared functions in ANGEL though would like to see it in LMS

Discussions/chats could be more dynamic and interactive. See calendar comment above.
Course mail: does not work on tablet and could use better integration of roster input for
addresses (e.g. in Gmail, a user can begin typing a name in the TO: box and the full
email address of that named person gets automatically inserted)...
As stated above, the chat sessions are not to my satisfactory. I would like to have online
office hours since many of my students are in the field. This way I can answer questions
or concerns that students may have while interning.
the course mail feature in angel is superfluous due to the University email. Why do I
need to email accounts to talk to my students?
Announcements. Its difficult to put things in the announcements. It would be more useful
if they were easier to add/eddit/schedule. If an announcement is added, it would be nice
if the student got an update notice from it. THe mail and calendar need to not be isolated.
They need to be integrated into the university email systems. Angel is a messaging
system and not an email system. The roster tool is ok but the group feature is limited.
When you create the groups, their is no export group members, or publish group
members. Also if you create a few groups with students that request to be in a group and
then want Angel to create the rest of the groups or fill in the existing groups, your out of
luck.
To be honest, I have never used a private chat on ANGEL so I do not know if it is
possible. I prefer to be able to do things myself. Merging my course schedule to the
calendar was no easy task and would keep me from attempting to use the feature in the
future. I also have not used the RSS feeds so i am limited by what I have heard from
others.
I do not currently use the Calendar because it seems like a separate entity. If it linked to
assignments so I wouldn't have to do the work twice, I would use it more.
Either just have links to Eagle Mail in the new LMS or don't have mail.
Make threaded view of discussions more obvious in terms of reading and printing. Also,
can settings for grading, dropboxes hold when we set them to something other than 25?
Angel email does not work well on Mac Safari and I have to use FireFox (not a big deal).
mail is difficult to send to anyone but the list or individuals
Cannot provide answer to some queries as I do not currently use the function in Angel.
Angel mail is very difficult to use. Sending mail is cumbersome (especially the way you
have to search for and build addresses) and sporadically student email sent through
Angel does not get forwarded to my regular account. For the rest, I have not used those
features and/or I don't know how they would apply to a class. Individual chat might be
useful for virtual office hours.
I know that rosters and other report-type features have got to be easier in whatever
comes next.
Chat functions are limited, prefer to use Adobe Connect. Whena mail is forwarded, the
attachment file currently does not carry over. Also, when a file is attached to the dropbox
after grading, when this e-mailed, The attachment cannot be forwarded to other students.
I've attempted team chats in Angel simultaneously (in lieu of a class meeting), and the
system just crashed and crashed.
Items I left blank I do not use but they may be essential to others.
Can't forward out of the system
Roster tool, exporting it to word does not result in proper table format sometimes
With previous on line course delivery and earlier version of Angel more text allowed in
Announcements. Prefer not to be so limited in Announcement text length. It would be
valuable if email could be forwarded to other student email accounts.
I feel like the course mail is completely redundant. I'd rather students use the university
e-mail to message me. If the university e-mail and Angel e-mail were one and the same,
rather than two separate inboxes, that would be great. While I appreciate that Angel
offers RSS integration, it doesn't create feeds, and that's where I feel RSS would be
really helpful. I'd love to be able to create an RSS feed for Course Announcements.
I use Angel to post materials for my face to face course, and to communicate to several
community groups. I just use the basic functions, and do not envision using others.
For announcements: I often am told I exceed the allotted limit, particularly if I am trying
to include a link or figure - very frustrating. For calendar: see above For roster: I like the
ability to manage my own roster, rather than having to contact someone to add a user.
Announcements - hard to edit (the order you edit in makes a difference in the final look)
Course mail - would be nice if a "conversation set" could be viewed all at once as the
new Outlook can.
Course mail seems to be a challenge in that students will not check angel and not
forward to their eagle email. It would be nice if the integration of eagle mail and angel
mail were automatic and then a preference could be set to not integrate the two.
Students assigned an ANGEL E-mail that they appear not to check or forward?
N/A if assessing based on using a system for Staff related. Again, I am only looking at a
resource where Staff would be able to log in for department level training or study.
preparing and sending mail is not always stratightforward and formatting complicates the
process. Calendar could be tied into Announcements or email reminders. Never could
get the RSS Feeds to work well.
Setting up discussions was very complicated.
have only used Angel for the last 5 years, don't know about many of these offerings.
It would be helpful if displayed rosters included student ID numbers.
The calendar does not awlays line everything up correctly (aside from user error). The
discussion forums could be organized differently. I would not say I am satisfied or not
satisfied.
The current Angel html editor is not adequate for the copying and pasting/copying
courses/formatting requirements that I constantly use. A more powerful editor with
consistent reliability is needed.
Course mail is slow and cumbersome. Several clicks to move an email to a particular
folder for instance. Why not click and drag?! Again, these online learning platforms are
in the dark ages, comapartively speaking.
As mentioned earlier, the email is difficult to use and a lot of time is wasted for the user.
Again, I think these are absent from Angel.
Email system too slow.
I would like the students to have a notification bell ring or something to notify them of
new mail and I would love for them to determine which email account they will receive
their mail.
The mail didn't work very well on Macs until recently, so I hope the new system will be
better integrated for Macs.
The features not marked are the ones I have not learned how to use yet.
Students often complain that figuring out how to select the "To" in Angel emails is too
confusing and/or complicated.
Should have N/A if you didn't use items
I would like the calendar to sync across groups and to sync across students' courses.
I dislike the inability to send email to an address outside of Angel.
Some of the features above, I have not used. The mail in ANGEL is poor. I do not like
that the mail is a separate system, from FGCU mail, and that this cannot be "turned off."
I know I can forward mail from ANGEL to my FGCU email, but I should not have to
have a separate email system to organize, other than my faculty FGCU mail.
see previous comments regarding roster tool and reporting capability
The calendar seems pretty cumbersome. Also, if I want to use the calendar, then I have
to update things in at least two places since ANGEL doesn't talk to Gulfline (I know that
the latter isn't ANGEL's fault).
There is an issue that if students send me an email and I return them through outlook,
they sometimes don't go through. Not sure what is happening.
I don't use most of the above
I would like an LMS generated email to be sent to students everytime I post a new
announcement.
See above. Mail is not able to be shared outside system. Very frustrating. Roster tool
should be better able to download and turn into sign in sheets, etc.
Students can't access Angel e-mail from their phones.
for the calendar to be better linked with assignments in dropboxes
Mail is bulky and full of bugs, slow in current ANGEL lms.
Virtual office hours do not allow more than one student.
Since the last update of ANGEL, attachments must be uploaded individually, you can't
select 2 files and upload together.

Couldn't figure out how to import only certain settings from one course to another.
Overall this is ok, but their are some shortcomings. I know when I copy assessement, the
actual questions dont get copied. The import process does not work as advertised
sometimes.
Other than the Sandbox, how can faculty share?
importing a class from one semester to the next should be automatic.
I want to map my course assignment to our program IPM, but I don't know how to do
that - to get the BS in CJ IPM student learning goals in to the system so I can map to
them.
I didn't know we could map student learning outcomes to assignments in ANGEL now.
Better uploading of test banks. Backup with better labelling of what is there.
I have never figured out how to load test questions and wind up typing them over.
Courses disappear too quickly, especially if they are not taught every year I have trouble
loading/finding the contents.
I am not invested enough in Angel to require these, but other faculty will.
If it weren't for Andi Benscoter, my courses would not be combined when needed...
I am not sure dissatisfied is the correct term but rather that I don't quite know how to use
and have not been able to get to a class
1) Does no. 1 mean from another LMS? 2) I am against uploading publisher content on
principle for the kinds of courses I teach. I don't like delegating the teacher role to a
commercial publisher. 3) Not sure what this means. 4) Not essential but I can see it
would be useful. 5) Not sure what this means. Perhaps for HUM 2510 it would be
convenient to be able to do certain things for all sections at once, but is that not true
now? 6) How does this differ from #1?
What of this I've tried has been cumbersome.
Again most of tehse cannot be done or done with difficulty. After backup, I had problem
retreiving some of quizzes this year. Several sections of the course cannot combined if
taught by different faculty, but can be if same faculty. Importing from another ANGEL
course works.
I haven't tried some of the features above. I feel like it's unfair to say I'm satisfied or
unsatisfied considering that...
Uploading from publisher & other external materials is DIFFICULT and sometimes just
too cumberson to follow through. Repositories for charing content amongfaculty in a
college or Department are diffciult to find- located in too disparate places.
Import all or part of an existing course into ANGEL - links are often broken
I do not have knowledge about several of the items noted above.
If employees were taking courses where outcomes relate to planned annual evaluation
training goals.
Importing? Always material missing or not copied
All my classes are subdivided into lab sections. It would be very helpful if I could
combine them into one class.
See above
uploads are tedious, mapping lo to assignments is great until a hard copy need to be
produced. Not a report friendly format.
At times, some of the functions in the imported course do not work without time-
consuming editing.
All these things take too much time. Why, for instance, doesn't ANGEL back up my
course automatically. I lost a bunch of stuff by mistake once, because I didn't back up.
See above.
Unless I'm missing something, I have to physically upload PowerPoints from publishers.
I might be confusing import with load/migrate but my only complaint is that I can't
populate a current course with content from a previous course without calling the support
staff. Seems like this should be an instructor-authorized action.
I have not used it to map student learning so, instead of selecting "Yes" I select "No"
The features not marked are the ones I have not learned how to use yet.
My main reason for the "not satisfied" responses is that Angel often requires a lot of
backtracking and repetition. So I have "ease of use" and navigation issues.
I'm not sure if Angel has the ability to do the items I answered "not satisfied" to, but I
have not seen them.
I find ANGEL very difficult and hard to use in sharing content among faculty. It is very
hard to navigate for this use.
For combining sections: I found that easy enough to do at the course editor level, but it
was cumbersome to add a Course Assistant to the combined course. For migrating
content from other LMSs: I didn't know ANGEL could do that... how would I go about
doing that? What other LMSs does that apply to? I guess "not satisfied" isn't accurate, it's
more of a "lack of training/knowledge" issue.
students complain about "losing" information once courses are no longer listed on their
Angel account.
Some of it is slower, it is hard for me to say because alot of this is being done by
Elspeth's team. The backup is dangerous if you push the wrong button you can loose
your files.
When importing or copying a course into Angel, if you change the assignment, it
changes it in the original course. Due to this "new" change, I have to create new courses
each semester and then copy that to the other sections. Instead of being able to import a
course from last semester and make changes to the question.
I teach 2 sections of the same course, and upload material in two separate places. I can
copy from one to another but I keep doing this if I need to change something. I do not
think there is a way to place files and keep them synchronized for the 2 sections. Also, I
do not think there is a way to transfer the gradebook setup, e.g. grading categories from
one semester to the next for the same course.
Importing and backup can be inconsistent in terms of reliability. You never know if
Angel really will work.
I've had to backup courses before, and apparently I didn't do it right because then Elspeth
(or Muriel, maybe) had to restore it for me. Again, the ignorance of the user might be of
consideration here...
I would like to be able to combine/integrate only parts of courses but have some items
separate.
Bulky to copy from one course into another ... what about drag-n-drop file options???
migrating content from Angel to whatever new system would be great.
The above chart represents users who use ANGEL.
What other features not currently available would you like to see in the next LMS?
(54 Responses)
Open sourcing.
I would like to have a platform that is continually updated with all RHM majors. This
way,I could post all internship and field experience positions and the students would
have a searchable database. I would also like to hold online office hours and live chat
sessions. It would also be nice to have a survey software built in so I can send out
automatic electronic evaluations to internship site supervisors.
integration with student/staff/faculty email/calendar. More global and or group settigns
capabilities.
Attendance tied to gradebook.A way that students can upload larger files, as my classes
involve projects with photos and video.
The biggest is to be able to edit/comment in a student document without saving it and reuploading.
I would like to be able to set more things up myself, not have to email to get someone in
a section, set up the learning outcomes, and link them to assignments, etc..
I think I have covered that in comments above.
Randomize content (various listening examples)
See above.
Better grade book functions like statistical comparisons
none at this time
would like more classes available to learn features.
Effective drag-and-drop content loading. Thumbnails for content links. There is
something like that now but it does not work well. My need is to be able to load multiple
images quickly and easily, and have them display as thumbnails within a folder, without
having to separately label each one (Chartres Cathedral. West Facade. Virgin portal,
upper lintel....). I don't want only one image to dispay, and I don't want the index image
to open automatically, which I believe is what happens now. A more flexible way to jazz
up the interface with images and good design. The ability to turn off things I don't want
and don't use. Some can be turned off, others can't. A more intuitive product that is
easier for people just starting out, and that has integrated self-help features for basic
functions, to reduce stress with every new hire or new adjunct. Angel was much harder
to get up and running with than either Courseworks or Blackboard, even though I had
more experience with LMSes when I got to Angel. Better test options, more test options,
options that accommodate pictures well.
n/a
Dropbox, Group, and Gradebook features can be improved. I mentioned the file
attachment issue earlier. Sorting mechanisms within dropbox. Grading per team for team
assigments. Also, would like to have access for certain areas in the course for student
assistants, not the entire course (do not know if it is doable).
I would love to have better integration with media, whether existing or self-created.
Do not know what is available. Only know D2L and Angel.
The ability to create rss feeds and other ways to update students of new content, and
better assessments design -- for example, WebCT has a timer while students take an
exam and a sidebar that allows them to see which questions they've answered and which
ones they have left to answer. Also, I'd like to see just more freedom in general to
customize the course home page.
The new system needs to accomdate one login same as for library resources, i.e. 14 digit
ID number which all State University Libraries require and are set up to use. FSU did
this years ago with Blackboard.
An LMS that can integrate student grades from other software, such as the various
clicker software program, would be an added benefit.
The ability for team grades to be applied in the grade book to the entire team. Ability to
grade online and provide comments within a file without having to download - save upload. (basically online editing) Larger file uploads allowed.
Creating a community group instead of a classroom
Everything that ANGEL has should be maintained in the next LMS. Moodle is not
capable of keeping up with ANGEL.
Easy help tool for simple questions
batch uploading of student emails to populate community groups. Currently, I have to
manually add and remove names from the School of Nursing Advising Group. If we
could batch upload, that may help.
grading and gradebook flexibility and use of scored rubrics is essential FOR ALL
CLASS MATERIALS, including assignments, discussions, etc. and an easy to use
gradebook that doesn't take excessive amounts of time to work with
Better integration of learning object repositories, ability to run SCORM lessons from a
repository
Angel has just about everything essential, maybe a surface writing option. Needs to
move more to cloud computing orientation. Or more popular word processing software
apps.
Live face-2-face chats (e.g. group Skype of ooVoo),
More flexible and powerful blogging and wiki functions.
I am fairly satisfied with Angel. My recent experience with Blackboard revealed its
inferiority to Angel so I would not recommend it. More features such as a video
streaming tool in which video clips created by students could be uploaded to a discussion
forum, for example, and streamed. This would require more uploading disk space, among
other features. I would like these features to be integrated into the gradebook function,
too. A mobile app which would entail development of functions whereby students could
access Angel courses on their smartphones. Integration of a final grade function in Angel
with the university record-keeping function in Gulfline. Also, integration of logging on
with work computer logging on so that only one log on is required.
More interactive learning games besides a crossword puzzle and jeopardy.
social networking
Better blogging tools.
Ability of students to upload large files. Faster response from program when using email.
more integration of freeware so that my students or I don't have to go outside the LMS to
do assignments.
student assessment at the program, department and university levels.
See prior comments
The option to link attendance to the gradebook. Voice software recognition programs for
grading papers!
N/A
More ways to communicate with students.
better integration of published provided content/syncing of grade books etc.
If it were possible to post my syllabus simultaneously to ANGEL and Gulfline, that
would be great (however, I know this isn't just an LMS issue).
Live web chats, real-time video recording so distance learning students feel like they are
attending class
If the assignment is allowed to be resubmitted allow the student to select the previous
answer...so if they only missed one they don't have to retype all of their answers. Less
cumbersome in setting up quizzes, etc. I should not have to keep clicking the dialog box
saying yes, I want to copy this from Word. Be able to copy questions without it linking
to the original question. Make it more user friendly in setting up quizzes, etc.
Mapping to gulfline and uin. Copying folder and gradebook setup from one semester to
the next.
Modern browser support! iPad/iPhone support
ability to send students messages via text. Reminders to check ANGEL. Standard
message.
Better team functions and blogging tools.
a platform for conducting classes in SecondLife; Better iPad (or tablet computer) or
smartphone integration
One with more intuitive interfaces that allow for easier assignment generation.
We would like to see a feature that would enable the Testing Center to better serve both
our staff and student community by securely delivering a course related assessment.
Video Capture of Lectures Email links directly to FGCU Email
Multiple file upload
What do you like most about ANGEL?
(95 Responses)
Very traditional "feel."
Students can connect with other students in their class; feedback to students
tracking and posting documents that the curriculum teams can share. Able to easily
access the information during meetings.
Turn It In Ability to send automatic emails Copying course content
it does the basics.
I am satisfied with all that it offers.
I can draw together many types of items under one module, such as web discussions,
links to internet (important!), drop boxes and files. Also, the gradable discussion forums,
which I find essential for online classes.
I like that students can keep track of their progress as long as the instructor is doing their
part.
Tests and gradebook.
Email is in the system, don't have to fill my FGCU mail and can keep track of student
emails; can post all class materials and quizzes/exams in angel, for on campus and
virtual classes.
I know how to use many of the features, like the rubrics.
Easy for students to see their updated average grade and I can keep class handouts there
so that if a student needs an extra copy it is there.
Ability to take a class completely online, including paper submission and chat sessions.
students can get everything they need for the course without my having to explain it in
35 emails.
students finally get the hang of it.
provides a mechanism to share files: videos, images, etc... with the students
General flexibility and variety of features.
Once you learn the system it is wasy to navigatate through.
Ease of use
Mostly user friendly and no to many "clicks" or "pages" to get where you want to go .
posting powerpoints, using the site for course related mail
Te old gradebook (less the display of unnecessary information that confuses students).
The ability to load different kinds of content into a single week's folder. The student
tracking and complex test management tools.
It's so much better than anything I've used before ...
Overall, it is an OK system to have. Importing questions for quizzes, ability to copy,
move.
That I know it and can use it reasonably well. the learning curve with Angel is not steep,
and that really helps.
User interface
Easy to use. Nice format.
I like being able to easily create folders for each week's content and then create subfolders within. This makes the content navigation and instructional design quite simple.
The email capability; grade posting; grade summaries; posting of notes, etc.
It has relatively intuitive surface programming
Ease of use
Course Roster with capability for students to add information about themselves and a
photo. Multiple views of discussion folder submissions. Access to quick reports
regarding submissions.
It offers a lot of options, like wikis and blogs, that I haven't had the opportunity to test
drive, but I was looking forward to experimenting with them in my classes eventually.
Keeping track of students in the program and being able to download roster
It is the most user friendly of those that we've had at FGCU. I hated earlier LMS where
we had to create in one place & transfer the info. Angel is great because everything is
done within it.
The help and instruction that Elspeth and C.J. give for it. Please clone them! Their
talents in instructional design are underutilized. Elearing needs more staff!! (as if you
didn't know)
The group repsitories are great for classes that have multiple sections and one group
coordinator.
Internal program documents can be shared with our students instead of emailing them.
Ease of use, self explanatory, excellent LMS.
User friendliness
organized repository for electronic course materials
The ability to roll over a course.
I know how to used it.
I use ANGEL in a very basic way and I find it easy to navigate and manage.
Being able to drag and drop files!
Assessment builder and item analysis, ability to publish content from learning object
repository
It is simple and easy to use, even for a technophobe like me.
everything in one place
logical arrangement of features; gradebook; reports
Angel is very student centric. I also teach at a Blackboard institution. That platform is
very faculty centric but students have a much harder time using the LMS than my
students with Angel.
It is organized fairly intuitively.
Clean design and fast processing
Assignments integrated into the gradebook
The ability to uplaod content and import between classes/semesters.
The ability to change title and subtitles of everyting. For instance "Lessons" to
"Content".
Overall ease of use.
User friendly for the most part.
Easy content delivery of pdfs and word files
Elspeth and CJ....they are soooooo helpful and enthusiastic about sharing best practices
and offering their services.
People that support Angel at FGCU is nice and professional.
Discussion Forums
limits paper copying..and assures delivery of assignments
It's very much like Blackboard, which I used at a previous institution.
I like the ability to send reminders to students based on whether they did or did not
submit to a drop box, complete a survey etc. However, I think there could be an easier
interface for making that happen.
The possibility to communicate with all my students at the same time and to share and
grade documents without the need to print out handouts and assignments. It is very eco
friendly!!!
Students being able to keep track of their grades and the assignments
All classwork can be located in one system for students.
It works smoothly
I like that I have access to student profiles with pictures (for most students). It helps me
connect names with faces.
It is pretty straightforward, flexible, and reliable.
It's extremely user friendly.
Discussion forums, the layout is nice, nicely organized.
posting files to supplement in-class lectures, grade posting
I like the ability to automatically report grades, manage course content and assignments.
Organization, publishing and sharing of course content for a class has been very helpful.
I use Angel considerably more for my hybrid class than I do for my other classes.
everything
The ability to have things posted and set for start and end times for assignments.
The people supporting us on campus.
user friendly for basic functions
Grades assignments and gives students immediate feedback.
Folders
Ability to disseminate info and tasks and collect student work
The students seem to function well with it. The exams/quizzes work well, but the most
current version of Angel seems less user friendly from the faculty side in the exams.
Its ability to communicate with mass amounts of people, ability to group people into
different categories and create distribution lists, ability to filter emails by course, and its
centralized calendar. My experience with ANGEL includes: Campus Reservations lessons/content tab to post weekly schedules and payroll submission schedules (from HR
website), communicate weekly issues/changes in policy using the ANGEL email option
(and copy students on their email accounts), calendar feature for payroll submission due
dates and reminders, and discussion forums for time off requests and shift substitutions
(RSS feed used to get a copy in supervisor's Outlook email). Student Organization
(Colleges Against Cancer) - communicate semester-based meeting schedule and
locations, upcoming events, recruit volunteers, list those that have completed service
learning forms. Student Support Services - centralized communication tool. Use content
tabs for staff bios and department overview, schedule of events, required paperwork,
short quiz distribution, communicate with peers and newsletter distribution.
It streamlines communication, grading, and shared files for classes.
Students seem to be very familiar with ANGEL. Therefore, as long as I uploaded
important information, such as syllabu and assignment guideline, on ANGEL, they can
go there to check such information. Once I started using ANGEL, it certainly reduced a
lot of email correspondences from students, asking for such information.
easy to use and a lot of possibilities
"One-stop shopping" for course. This is also a liability if there is server trouble.
Keeps my classes organized in a digital package that makes presenting and sharing
information much easier.
It allows me to post files as well as grades. Other than that, I use it as little as possible.
The system is significantly behind similar publisher systems in terms of development
and ease of use.
ANGEL is very user friendly. It does not take students long to learn how to use ANGEL.
My familiarity with it.
Integration of tools that are available to all students. Gradebook integration. Ability to
organize content in folders.
The ease of posting lectures, learning games and on-line quizzes.
Posting documents, communicating with students and general course management,
including grades.
Assessments,Gradebook; Lessons; Communications
What do you like least about ANGEL?
(89 Responses)
See comments above: out-dated, does not interface with tablet, needs improvement with
discussions/chats, email list of contacts needs re-programming...
Not widely used by all faculty; I think that the next system should be a requirement for
all faculty to use; be sure to have plenty of training opportunities
There are so many options for faculty to format and customize their courses, that
students sometimes have a longer learning curve with ANGEL.
Would like to see surveys and live chats.
The course mail. See above
no ability to apply settings to large sections. No way to see all of the settings you have
made for the content.
The attendance function.
too many clicks to get things done.
Communications (clunky and not compatible with Chrome).
Email is very slow. Also, recently, My mozilla firefox did an auto upgrade, and it
appears that now when I am in email after I send a few emails the Firefox program
crashes.
Differences among platforms causes problems for my students, especially Mac users.
Setting variables about new v. old grading, just setting everything to start a class. It
would be nice to assign faculty 'presets' so that every time I have a new course I don't
need to change everything (how the grade is reported, etc.)
A little hard to navigate at times.
I like that students can always know what their grade is up to any point in time in the
course.
seems 'clunky' - sometimes hard to navigate or figure out how to do something.
students seem to want it instead of any other strategy
the gradebook design and the assessments
Where inflexibilities exist, ANGEL limits creativity. For example, main lessons page
does not allow incorporation of content within the body of the page.
Clunky software
It has its limitations, but nothing that you cannot work around.
n/a
Changing it out...
Reports are difficult for me to navigate/understand
The Help functions which are, frankly, useless. The fact that old courses tend to
disappear before the 2nd iteration of those courses, if you teach certain courses once
every 3 semesters or every other year. Ideally I would like the previous iteration to be
kept on automatically, without having to remember to salvage it through a backup
routine. Yes, we should all be backing up old courses to an archive, but I have had a lot
of trouble getting this done because it is something I dont' have to do all the time, and
therefore every time I get a reminder about it I hit a barrier because I don't remember
how to do it and it is extra steps when I am already desperately busy. In practice it rarely
happens when it is supposed to, and I lose valuable time and information that way.
It's still a steep learning curve for digital immigrants.
Speed, lack of certain features, not being compatible w/ Windows 7
some of the rigidity - stifles our ability to be creative with the appearance of courses.
Limits on file sizes, way associate file content is handled /mis handled. Autosaves on
tests
It is very un-friendly towards Macs, which both myself and a bunch of my students use.
Also, the user guides for both students and faculty are quite poor. The navigation and
content never fully addresses the issues. Whenever I have a technical question, I just
google it instead of trying to use the provided help. Also, setting up the gradebook to tie
to assignments is cumbersome. I frequently have to go in a reconnect each to make the
grades actually display in the gradebook.
Extraneous garbage. Some students and faculty have started sending essentially junk
mail to classes -- trying to sell text books, promote events, etc. To me that IS NOT A
SERVICE
Help -- tutorials, video clips other ways to get help.
I think the interface is a bit cluttered and potentially confusing for someone who's never
used it before. I wish it wasn't so restrictive when it comes to the course home page
design. Also, the assessments drag and drop tends to be really glitchy.
ANGEL does not seem to export items easily.
The Instruction manual is not well indexed- too hard to find what you need quickly, and
some things are not explained or the instructions don't match the version. The backup
and 'restore earlier backup' are too close together- very dangerous. Media uploads and
links are too difficult. Associated File structure and locations are very difficult.
Gradebook is a bit confusing.
Cannot delete some of our uploaded files from previous semester. Also, no dates on
uploaded file. Also, you cannot view the entire name of the uploaded file.
I wish it was easier to change the configuration of the home page.
Some features are cumbersome; I teach Gen Bio II with 140-180 students. To review
individual student responses to on-line quizzes requires scrolling through a long list of
names as Angel records submissions based on time and the re is no way to sort
alphabetically. Also the HTML editor in creating assignments (i.e. quizzes) is
cumbersome.
Link breaks, Discussion Forum settings can be tricky at times.
No time to learn it all. Every time Firefox updates little things don't work right in
ANGEL.
Having to change dates in multiple places for one course.
It has a lot of functionality, but it is not obvious as a novice how to implement in the
class.

That the students have to log into Angel regardless of what they want to look at. If they
just want to see announcements or the syllabus they should be able to see that without
having to log in.
Nothing, I am happy with it.
ugly text and formating
slow and cumbersome, all folders look the same, graphics quality is weak.
Grade books takes too many clicks to enter assignmetn and grade data. Would prefer a
psreadsheet view.
I like how it is very straight-forward and user-friendly.
grading in discussion forum via "grade submissions" does not allow for downloading of
attachments
It is nearly useless to our students with Macs.
I wish the discussion section was more dynamic.
File upload size limit is too small.
It is fairly bloated and therefore hard to accomplish certain tasks and not very userfriendly.
How slow it is. I also dislike that I can't put YouTube videos up.
email is cumbersome uploading is cumbersome - too many steps
Slow reaction time.
Unintuitive interface
the fact that the social networking features are so limited....and there is too much
gatekeeping... Why can't I add people to my class rosters?
Boring interface and sensitive to browsers
steps it takes to load things and the gradebook set up...too many steps that could affect
the existence of an assignment.
It works about the same, so I like it.
Do not like the reports. I want to be able to save teh results of individual student surveys
to my computer. I need to be able to save everything a student does in a form that can be
transferred out of the system and onto a computer hard drive. I also think the Gradebook
could be much simpler to set up.
I still cannot access directly to an online link that has been sent by email. I guess it is due
to security reasons.
How many of the functions require backtracking and repetition.
When an instructor has added new items or folders as they just appear, although I did not
know about the task feature so maybe it showed before and I was unaware.
I am a new Angel user and it is not intuitive!
Hangs up
Online teaching is time-consuming, but that is not the fault of ANGEL.
Uploading document, grading, email
The layout, mail within ANGEL
There are times where performance is slow. I have also had some difficulties with
downloading of documents for review from turnitin along with the integration of the
grading function. I believe as indicated above that there should be enhanced reporting
capabilities available.
that we are losing it
see above.
mail system, takes too long to load
The complaints from students when Angel is slow or acts up when they are submitting
assignments.
Lack of reliability; lack of flexibility in communication; complicated integration among
functions in Angel (e.g., discussion board grading, attendance grading don't always
translate)
Help function is not robust
Seems like I do a lot of "clicking" to get where I am going. The gradebook set up does
not seem intuitive to me.
That it is often not working properly and is not compatible with all browsers and their
updates.
As I mentioned above, I still create attendance and grading sheet on my own, not using
ANGEL. If there is a bit easier way to set it up, I'd love to use such function in the
future.
rigid structure of opening web pages, e.g. "Resources" "Lessons" etc. These categories
are not a good fit to the way I structure my classes. (Maybe they can be customized, but I
haven't tried.)
Slow, clunky, bulky steps involved.
Too many settings to make an assignment work.
The HTML editor is not consistent at times. It tends to add extra lines and spaces. What
you see is not always what you get.
Its current Secure Browser feature offers a rudimentary interface.
That it is often more difficult to use than is worth the effort.
The number or steps necessary to move content from one class to another.
complex setup of categories in the management section

My vote is for MOODLE.
The students love that the internship are now on ANGEL. It helps with the monthly
check ins and final paper submission. It would be really great if there was a platform
where internship employers could interact as well.
Thanks for all you do to suport our online classes.
I wonder if focus groups would also help you get information you need. As I answered
these questions, I thought it might be helpful to brainstorm with others.
Thanks for doing this!
I think systems like Angel work great as long as the professor is responsive when there
are questions.
I'm sure ANGEL can do much more than I know about, and I don't have any experience
with anything else, so I can't tell you much about what else I would like to see!
Thank you for the opportunity for input.
I trust our LMS contacts to choose. Do not allow directors who have not the direct
experience to choose. Drive the decision "down" to users. Avoid topdown decision
processes.
I am in hopes that whatever is adopted that there is a seamless import and that we do not
have to reinvent our courses once again.
Thanks!
We urgently need more dedicated Angel support, ideally a dedicated staffed help desk
for routine matters and urgent matters that is available when faculty are actually working
on courses OR teaching courses, espcially including weekends and evenings. We also
need more higher-level e-learning staff to help people design courses and get them
running. More and more courses are being taught online, more people are starting out to
teach online, and there is no expansion of the staff. If there was a dedicated help desk
with knowledgable staff, and that helpdesk was always reliably there when you were in
the middle of something and needed help, people would learn to go to it first. Right now
the e-learning staff is overwhelmed and often, out giving training or on projects when
you have an emergency.
Good luck with a bog chore! :)
I hope to see us adopt a free LMS.
I am a student myself in addition to teaching. For the classes in which I am a student, we
use BlackBoard and I must say- Angel is much better.
Just as I was feeling comfortable and really liking ANGEL we're going to dump it and
start all over? What a waste of faculty time to have to start all over.
Whatever system is chosen, I hope we get it early enough to explore its use before
implementing it.
I've worked with WebCT and Blackboard, and I think in some respects, Angel is
superior, but in others it's not -- particularly with regard to the interface. I think WebCT
is more user-friendly, and that should be a high priority for us in choosing a new LMS.
It'd be nice if we could get the best of both worlds.
I hope that the new program will allow us to utilize a system that supports using it as we
do ANGEL. We use ANGEL as a way to track stdudnets, their progress in the program
and as our main communication tool.
Thank you for asking for input. One big factor has to be the compatiblility with current
files in ANGEL and their transferabiliyt to a new system. Having to recreate most files
into a new LMS will be the last straw for faculty. Your questionnaire nneds an option to
answer "not used" along with satisfied or dissatisfied.
I have worked with ANGEL, WebCT, Blackboard, Moodle and eCollege currently and
throughout the last two years. Angel puts them all to shame, it is by far the best LMS
while Moodle is by far the worst followed by eCollege from an instructor's standpoint.
Please don't MOODLE me I cannot stress enough what a nightmare Moodle is for
professors and students alike!!!
Glad you are working on this.

The survey asked everyone to respond, whether users or not, whether faculty or staff..so
some questions were not applicable as I am not an instructor or student here at FGCU.
Any web-based system these days, which allows for most browsers, on a PC or MAC, is
likely suitable.
let me know if I can help.
I currently am using Canvas at Edison as part of a pilot program and LOVE it! Let me
know if you want to get in touch with the Edison Online team about Canvas. Another
pilot group is using Blackboard. I believe ESC is going to go with Canvas.
Great job so far! Let me know if I can assist...Mark
Simple is always better (for me)! Because freeware options aren't making money they
tend to be the most streamlined and user-friendly. However, they may lack certain key
features. Thank you for asking our opinion. You have a tough decision ahead of you and
I wish you luck!
I hope we can get an LMS that is as powerful as Angel.
Good luck on finding an LMS that will suit our purposes at FGCU. I would like to be a
part of any Beta testing of any product you are considering. I am taking online courses at
Boise State and they use Moodle. I like it.
Please use this selection process to educate the university faculty about on-coming
change.
Thank you for conducting this survey!
ANGEL has made my life much, much easier!!!! I am very grateful for the opportunity
of having Angel!!! Gracias!!!
I am not a feculty member so I could not answer most of the questions.
I am not familiar with some items, and there was no way to indicate that on this survey.
I did not need to use a lot of the tools ANGEL had to offer, but it has been a great LMS
over the years, both for me as a student and a professional.
I hope you are soliciting comments from students also.
