Medicare Open Enrollment is the tim e
of year when you can change your Medicare
coverage. Since plans are contracted with
Medicare annually, it is helpful to work with
a broker who can help you review all of your
options.
Medicare beneficiary has a spouse

insurance through the Exchange.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
As a leading independent insurance agency in
the P a c i f i c Northwest, we represent most of
the major Medicare Advantage and Medicare
Supplement plans offered in the region. We have
local, experienced and knowledgeable insurance
agents that can answer your questions, review
your options, and ultimately help you apply for
coverage. We offer our services without any
charge or obligation.
Medicare Open Enrollment occurs from
October 15 to December 7 every year.

If you enroll in a plan during Open
Enrollment, your coverage starts January 1.

In most cases, Open Enrollment is the only

Take time to review your Current

Have your healthcare needs or prescriptions

Does your plan cover routine vision, hearing,

Don’t Get Tricked This Halloween
You may spend weeks preparing for Halloween, carving pumpkins and making costumes. Is your
insurance ready? What happens if a child falls on your walk and the parents sue you for medical costs?
Unfortunately, you may be held liable. The liability portion of a standard homeowners insurance policy
will cover your defense and the payment of damages for such an event.
There are other insurance related considerations to think about, too. What if your house is vandalized?
Although most homeowners policies cover vandalism, you’ll need to determine whether the damage is
more than your deductible.
Here are a few more tips for a great Halloween:
Turn on all outside lights. Leave them on all night to deter vandalism.
Make sure walks and pathways are clear of debris; if a pumpkin is
smashed on your walkway, clean it up right away to avoid slips.
Burn candles in a safe location.
Be sure your treats are safe for small children.
If you have any questions regarding your homeowners insurance and the
coverage you have, give MIM a call. Take the scare out of Halloween with
the right insurance.
Open Enrollment on Health Insurance Exchanges
Under the healthcare law, the Affordable Care Act, nearly everyone must have health insurance. However,
you can't just go out and buy health insurance whenever you want. Unless you qualify for a special exception,
you can sign up only during open enrollment.
Open enrollment for health plans for coverage that starts in 2016 is not far away. Here's what you need to
know about open enrollment for coverage in 2016:
On Feb. 20, 2015, the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services announced that the 2016 Open
Enrollment Period for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act will be November 1 through
January 31, 2016.
The individual’s date of enrollment will determine the start date for coverage as follows:
Member enrolls
Effective date of coverage is
Nov. 1, 2015 to Dec. 15, 2015
Jan. 1, 2016
Dec. 16, 2015 to Jan. 15, 2016
Feb. 1, 2016
Jan. 16, 2016 to Jan. 31, 2016
March 1, 2016
If you miss this window you cannot enroll until the Marketplace re-opens in November 2016 unless you have
a special “life event” such as having a baby or losing your job. This is designed to prevent people from taking
advantage of the system by enrolling and dropping insurance multiple times a year when they only get sick.
If you don’t enroll in 2016, you’ll be fined 2.5% of your income or $695 per adult ($347.50 per child under
18), whichever is higher. Don’t risk your finances on expensive medical bills and services. Let MIM help you
get the affordable protection that keeps those you care about most healthy with an Individual and Family
Health Insurance policy!

‘Tis the Season for Plenty of Festive Fun
As the weather cools, the Portland Metro Area’s calendar fills with cultural, wine and holiday events. While
Oregonians are currently enjoying the pleasant weather, it won’t be long before the Northwest gloom
settles over the land. But don’t let that change in the weather get you down–bust out the raincoats, boots
and hats and venture out for some fun, festive activities! Here’s just a small offering of events taking place
in the area to get you in the mood...
Harvest Festival at Fir Point Farms
Fall at the farm is all about having a great time with family. Pick your own pumpkins in the 6 acre pumpkin
patch while getting your own corn stalks or hay bales for decorating. Activities like hay rides, corn mazes,
bounce houses, etc. run every weekend thru October 31st. Free admission and parking.

The Corn Maize on Sauvie Island
Just 25 minutes north of downtown Portland, The Pumpkin Patch celebrates the harvest and Halloween with
two giant corn mazes: one “haunted,” and one sporting a different locally themed design each year.

Haunted Houses
Portland likes its scares as much as any other city, and has the haunted houses to prove it. Some of the biggest
annual options include Fright Town at Memorial Coliseum, and the 13th Door and Fear Asylum in nearby
towns Beaverton and Milwaukie, respectively.

The Give ‘n Gobble Thanksgiving Run/Walk & Food Drive

Wine Country Thanksgiving
During Wine Country Thanksgiving, more than 160 wineries and tasting rooms in the Willamette Valley
open their doors for special tastings and holiday festivities over Thanksgiving weekend (Friday-Sunday),
offering an opportunity to visit some of the region’s small, family-owned wineries that aren’t usually open to
the public. Meet winemakers, enjoy specialty food pairings and live music, all while savoring the region’s
acclaimed wines.

Holiday Light Displays
Some of Portland’s bright spots include ZooLights, a display of more than a million lights at the Oregon Zoo,
an awesome display at The Grotto, and the Christmas Ship Parade, featuring brilliantly decorated boats on
the Willamette and Columbia rivers.

else.
