Hair Cutting (angles)

PA GOVERNOR’S INSTITUTE--2005
Hair Cutting (angles)
Math-in-CTE Lesson Plan
Lesson Title: Hair Cutting (angles)
Lesson Number: 14
Occupational Area: Cosmetology
CTE Concept(s): Hair Cutting Angles
Math Concepts: Reading a protractor
Lesson Objective:
Supplies Needed:
The Students will identify various angles and its application to different types of hair cuts.
Pencil, paper, handouts, protractor, hair cutting posters
TEACHER NOTES
(and answer key)
THE "7 ELEMENTS"
1. Introduce the CTE lesson.
Today we are going to review the various angles in relation to the head
when performing hair cuts.
1. Who can tell me various degrees?
2. Can any of you tell me the name of the instrument used to
measure angles?
0, 45, 90, 180, 360 degree.
Protractor
3. How many of you have ever used a protractor before?
4.
2. Assess students’ math awareness as it relates to the CTE lesson.
I will display photos/posters of different hair cuts below:
One length = 0 degree
Low level = 45 degree
Layered = 90 degree
Long layers = 180
Can you tell me the difference between these hair cuts?
One has no layers; the others have different degrees of
layers.

3. Work through the math example embedded in the CTE lesson.
I will draw a diagram of the head on the board. I will draw a line
showing the 0 degree. I will explain that this is a one level hair cut with
no elevation.
From that 0 degree diagram I will draw a line straight out from the
head.
Does anyone know what angle it is?
This creates a layer hair cut removing weight from the hair.
90 degree
How about if I split the 90 degree in half. What angle does it give?
Correct, this creates a low elevation hair cut.
45 degree

Hair Cutting (angles)
Now, when I go the opposite direction of the 0 degree, what angle do I
have?
Correct, this gives you a long layered hair cut.
180 degree
4. Work through related, contextual math-in-CTE examples.
Given a hand out with blank head forms, the students will draw 0, 45,
90 and 180 degrees angles.
**See Worksheet #1**
Afterwards, the students will be given protractors to check their work.
1. Did anyone notice anything odd about the protractor?
2. How do we know which end to use?
5. Work through traditional math examples.
It has 0 – 180 degrees on both ends.
It depends if we are looking at the right or left profile of
the head.
**See Lesson 14--Worksheet # 2**
Given a handout, the student will work on traditional math concepts
with the use of a protractor. (see worksheet)
6. Students demonstrate their understanding.
Your assignment will be to create a portfolio by going through
magazines, finding hair styles with these various angles and labeling
them with their correct degree.
7. Formal assessment.
Evaluating the portfolio.
**See Angle Rubric**
