What Do Biomedical Scientists Do?
NHS biomedical scientists conduct precise cutting-edge
scientific analyses of clinical samples, with results underpinning the diagnosis and treatment of disease, ultimately contributing to the clinical outcomes of patients.
Biomedical scientists might also work in research facilities, or go on to study at postgraduate level in a wide
range of bioscientific and medical disciplines.

What do Abertay Biomedical Science graduates work on?
For her Honours project, Biomedical Science student
Kirsty Lewis worked with the Abertay scientists who hit
the headlines last year when they grew miniature
beating human hearts to find a cure for heart disease.
As a result of her work on this research, she not only
presented at an international student conference, but
also had her work published in a scientific journal.

in the NHS, research facilities in university, health and
commercial sectors. Several past graduates have opted for
other biology careers such as school teaching, or for
further study.
Salaries – Biomedical scientists usually start
at band 5 £21,692 - £28,180 and progress to
team leader or specialist roles at band 6 £
26,041 - £ 34,876. The range of typical
salaries at senior level with experience eg
team manager or advanced practitioner
band 7 is £ 31,072 - £40,964. For the most
senior positions, salaries can reach band 9
£77,850 - £98,453.
