Scope: This procedure applies to all GE Autosamplers. Safety: This procedure should be performed by personnel skilled in the maintenance of electromechanical instruments. Materials • Phillips (crosshead) screwdriver • Electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection • X Axis Motor Kit Procedures A. Remove the current X axis motor (next section). B. Install the new X axis motor (page 5). A. Remove the Current X Axis Motor 1. If the GE Analyzer is taking measurements, press the Stop Analysis button. 2. Turn off the Analyzer and the GE Autosampler, and close the DataPro software. 3. Unplug the power cord from the GE Autosampler and from the wall outlet or surge protector. Remove the back cover by unfastening the six securing screws. 5. Put on the wrist strap that is supplied in the kit. Put one end of the strap on your arm and the other end on one of the GE Autosampler’s metal surfaces. 6. Disconnect the cable at J1 on the X axis encoder board. 7. Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the two screws that attach the X axis encoder bracket with board to the GE Autosampler’s case. As you remove the board, pull it downward so the fragile jaws of the optical sensor clear the encoder wheel. Encoder wheel Caution: The optical sensor is fragile. Take care not to damage it. 8. Place the removed bracket and X axis encoder board in a safe place. Optical sensor You will reinstall it after you install the new X axis motor. Remove the top cover by removing the four screws in the sides and then gently pulling the top cover forward. If tubing is present, remove it from the clip attached to the top cover. 10. Loosen but do not remove the screw that holds the pulley to the bracket on the front of the GE Autosampler. 11. Move the pulley toward the back of the GE Autosampler, and remove the belt from the pulley. GE Analytical Instruments, Inc. ©2010J Page 3 of 6 DIN 88008-01 Rev. A KIT, X AXIS MOTOR, AUTOSAMPLER GE Autosampler X Axis Motor Kit 12. Unplug the cable from the motor to the interconnect board at J4. 13. Remove the bottom two screws from the motor. 14. While holding the motor, remove the top screw. 15. Remove the belt from the motor’s pulley and set the motor aside. GE Analytical Instruments, Inc. ©2010J Page 4 of 6 DIN 88008-01 Rev. A KIT, X AXIS MOTOR, AUTOSAMPLER GE Autosampler X Axis Motor Kit B. Install the New X Axis Motor 1. Remove the new motor and encoder wheel assembly from their packaging. Note: The encoder wheel assembly is shipped in a separate package to prevent damage. 2. Line up the setscrew hole on the encoder wheel assembly with the flat on the new motor’s shaft and put the encoder wheel assembly on the shaft. 3. Use the supplied Allen wrench to install one of the two setscrews. As you tighten the setscrew, make sure it hits the flat of the shaft. 4. Open the supplied packet of Loctite®. 5. Place a drop of Loctite® on the thread of the second setscrew, and install it in the same setscrew hole on the encoder wheel assembly. 6. Mount the new motor by placing the belt on the motor’s pulley and reinstalling the three screws. Setscrew hole Caution: Make sure the belt is not twisted and that it is engaged on the pulley. 7. Reattach the belt to the pulley at the front of the GE Autosampler by moving the pulley toward the back and putting the belt on the pulley. Caution: Make sure the spring is engaged to its two hooks. This acts as an auto-tension mechanism. 8. Tighten the screw that holds the pulley to the bracket on the front of the GE Autosampler. 9. Plug the motor’s cable into the interconnect board at J4. 10. Reinstall the top cover by sliding it on and securing it with four screws. If tubing was clipped to the top cover, reattach the tubing to the clip. Reinstall the X axis encoder bracket with board by loosely securing it with two screws. Caution: Take care not to damage the fragile U-shaped optical sensor. 12. Position the encoder wheel as close to the bottom of the U-shaped optical sensor as possible – without touching it – and center the encoder wheel between the jaws of the optical sensor. Caution: The wheel should not rub on any surface of the optical sensor. 13. Fully tighten the screws on the X axis encoder board bracket. Optical sensor 14. Reconnect the ribbon cable at J1 on the X axis encoder board. 15. Position the back cover with the notch at the GE Autosampler’s base, and reinstall the back cover by fastening six screws. 16. Plug in the GE Autosampler’s power cord. 17. Power on the GE Autosampler and observe that it operates as designed. Watch for error lights and any unexplained noise. 18. Dispose of removed materials according to local regulations. GE Analytical Instruments, Inc. ©2010J Page 6 of 6 DIN 88008-01 Rev. A KIT, X AXIS MOTOR, AUTOSAMPLER
