Abstinence is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays of Lent. On days of abstinence, meat may not be eaten at all. Fast – Catholics over 18 and up to the beginning of their 60th year are bound to the obligation of fasting. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the days of fasting. On these days, only one full meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. These Lenten regulations state the minimum requirements. Other recommended practices during this season include participating in daily Mass and fasting on other days. PLEASE PRAY FOR. . . Pope Francis asked for the Churches to stay open last year for 24 hours to show the world that God desires to offer Mercy to all in need. The Year of Mercy came to an end last November but the Mercy of God is never ending. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and Confessions will be available throughout the Vigil. Come all you who are weary and I will give you rest. BULLETIN COVER In the Gospels, our Lord pointed to the story of Jonah as the sign of His own resurrection. From earliest times, Christians have depicted this story of the prophet to profess their hope of rising with Christ. In the catechetical program, children have been learning of Jonah and working on depicting the story in drama and art. The bulletin cover which shows Jonah being swalled by the sea serpent was colored by Marcus Berry. Tercer Domingo de Cuaresma 19 de Marzo 2017 SAINT MARY PARISH My brothers and sisters in Christ, Last week, I read about a fire at a youth shelter in Guatemala City. There were over 750 children living in a place set to accommodate 500. Tragically, over 20 children died in the fire and over 40 were injured. Most of the children had been taken from their homes by the government authorities and placed in the shelter. May they rest in peace. Reading about that sad event reminded me of how grateful I am for having visited the orphanage of Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos last November. That orphanage was a beautiful safe, holy environment where children are loved and cared for. This weekend, one of the former residents of NPH will be visiting St. Mary’s and sharing with you his reflection on growing up in one of their communities. There will also be representatives of NPH available for anyone who may wish to sponsor a child. We are also grateful that St. Mary’s continues to support Only A Child with the Friday noon Mass collection. George Leger always comes and gives us a report on the work he is doing with the young men who come in from the streets of Guatemala in search of something better. Only a Child is sponsoring their annual fundraiser on Saturday, April 8 at the American Legion in Waltham at 7 p.m. You can get tickets at Onlyachild.org. There will be more info about this in next weekends bulletin. – Father Michael HAITI CHURCH RESTORATION FUND BOX We had to take the box away from the back of the church but we are still receiving change and donations for rebuilding the Church in Haiti. In the past 18 months we sent down our largest donation of $42,000. You can still donate by dropping coins in the collection basket or bringing it to the sacristy or rectory. When we started this 7 years ago, we knew it would be a long term project. How beautiful that so many people still remember the needs that were brought on by that devastating earthquake. And what an inspiration the Haitian people are – not giving up and plowing ahead. BIRTHRIGHT CARNATION DRIVE HELP We are looking for one or two volunteers to coordinate the Birthright Carnation Project that takes place every Mother’s Day weekend. Birthright aids and accompanies women going through crisis and unexpected pregnancies. Carnations are given out after all the Masses, and donations are accepted in return. We need one or two parishioners to organize the drop off of the flowers and the distribution of the flowers at the end of all Masses. Please contact the rectory if you wish to help. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS – MEETING MARCH 19 On Sunday, March 19 at 3:30 p.m., the Dr. John W. McDevitt Sr. Council Knights of Columbus will meet in the basement of Saint Mary’s rectory. Reminder: We ask members to please participate in the 40 Cans for Lent Drive. Get your family, relatives, friends, and neighbors to help you collect and leave 40 cans of food at the back of the Church by the end of Lent. The St. Vincent de Paul Society will take the cans to the food pantry. MASS INTENTIONS Mass intentions scheduled this week are listed below. Please find the full Mass Schedule on page 6.
