Essential
Sessions
Meet and share concerns across
topics of common interest with
peer-exchange sessions and lectures
by top industry thought leaders.
Money Does Matter in a Family Business
Figuring out the money in a family business or
partnership is very difficult and if not planned for
correctly can lead to the demise of the business and
the end of many good relationships. This lecture will
identify the main money and wealth issues facing family
businesses and partnerships, and will provide a plan and
roadmap to ensure these landmines are avoided.
Being an Effective Family Business Owner
More than 66 percent of all family businesses do
not make it to the next generation. Ultimately,
communication is the key to success for any family
business. Although family businesses should match
non-family ones in their governance structures and
opportunities for professional growth, they must also
be careful not to lose what makes them special. This
session offers some effective strategies for keeping
communication open and dealing with a range of difficult
problems that may arise, so you can concentrate on
running your business.
The Generation GAP—
Really Understanding Each Other
One generation listened to Bing Crosby, another Elvis,
another AC/DC, and now kids live on their Smartphones.
Whether you are a Baby Boomer, Gen X, Gen Y, or a
Millennial, all of us have our own unique hopes and
dreams. What are the differences and how can we all
work effectively together?
Planning and Preparing for Succession
for the Current Generation
In this highly interactive facilitated round table discussion,
current family business owners and partners will highlight
and discuss the main issues they face in day-to-day
operations and planning and preparing for succession:
• Are your kids interested in the business
• Are they capable - how can you ready them
• Are there obstacles to communication
• What is the issue with exit planning
Preparing the Next Generation for the Transition
Reserved exclusively for next generation family business
members, this round table discussion will highlight
mission critical issues facing the next generation leaders
and owners as they head down the path to eventual
business transition.
• How to deal with the current generation
• How do I prepare to be a good leader and owner
• How and when will a transition take place
• What about other stakeholders
Today’s Technology Ensures
Family Business Succession
Hear from TIA Members about the actual challenges they
faced building their own business infrastructure based on
prominent and costly technology. Panel members will be
from leading technology companies with the moderator
addressing the conflict between and the importance of
investing in technology vs. wealth and preservation.
Leadership Lessons from
Great Family Businesses
It’s no secret that family businesses can struggle with
governance, leadership transitions, and even survival.
For the Incumbent, how do you
• Choose the future leader of the family business
• Learning to let go
• Select a non-family member to run the business
•Governance
For the Successor, how do you
• Cope with working or non-working siblings
• Present grooming and mentoring
• Work with a non-family executive
• Choose between leadership vs. ownership
Partners and Family in Business Together
The IT Factor that enables family businesses to rise
to the top is trust. Family members can potentially
trust one another far more than non-family members.
Trust enables family businesses to outperform non-family
businesses. But how do you stay away from the businesskilling consequences? How do you bring a new partner
into the mix?
Family Enterprise Success Stories.
Hear from three of North America’s biggest familyowned, customer and employee focused transportation
companies, which are driven to deliver excellence and
learn how they stay on top.
Schedule
of Events
Family-owned businesses play a key role in the
global economy. They account for an estimated 80% of
companies worldwide and are the largest source of longterm employment in most countries. In the United States
they employ 60% of workers and create 78% of new jobs.
Focus on the next generation, not the next quarter.
