Minutes
1. Short Introduction to Phase 2 of IEA Wind Task 32
•
•
•
•
•
•
David Schlipf starts the meeting at 4:02 pm and asks to open the slides “Introduction to Phase 2”.
David Schlipf introduced the structure of Phase 2 of the Task and explains the role of the Advisory
Board.
Andrew Clifton explains “Application 1: Site assessment”.
Mike Courtney explains “Application 2: Power performance”.
David Schlipf explains “Application 3: Loads and control”.
David Schlipf explains “Application 4: Complex flow”.
2. Round of introductions for AB members and their expertise
•
AB members introduce themselves and their field of expertise.
3. Presentation of workshop proposal #1
•
•
David Schlipf and Julia Gottschall present the first workshop proposal on the “Floating Lidar
Recommended Practice (RP)”.
The aim is to have a workshop in February/March focusing on discussing key topics of the existing
draft of the RP and also to finalize a technology review of current Floating Lidar Systems.
4. Round of comments to proposal #1, then open discussion
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
As one key topic the uncertainty of Floating Lidar Systems is emphasized.
Julia Gottschall: Key topics are to be identified as well via a questionnaire which is distributed
prior to the workshop.
Julia Gottschall and Detlef Stein: Inform that there is an OWA project running focusing on the
revision of the existing draft of the RP. This is to be complementary to the IEA work and not
parallel.
Comment Andy Clifton agrees that it is an important subject. Encourages all workshop leads to
“aim high” to make best use of participants’ time and effort. Questions if the technology review
is needed at this time.
Since the feedback from the AB is all positive, since there are no objections, and since David Schlipf
thinks that the proposal is excellent and timely, Julia Gottschall is nominated by David Schlipf to
work out the workshop.
Julia Gottschall accepts.
Andy Clifton and David Schlipf encourage the AB to use the comment function on the google docs
document “Overview of all workshops” to ask further questions, or to mail workshop organizers
directly.
5. Presentation of workshop proposal #2
•
•
Eric Simley presents the second workshop proposal on “Optimizing lidar design for wind turbine
control applications”.
The aim is to close the gap of knowledge between lidar manufacturer and turbine manufacturer
on impact of measurement quality and controller implementation issues.
6. Round of comments to proposal #2, then open discussion
•
Dhiraj Arora supports the proposal and adds that this is an import topic, therefore it should be
not too difficult to include turbine manufacturer.
•
•
•
Andrew Clifton points out that more than the 5 mentioned topics might dilute the workshop.
Mike Courtney wants to know how the Lidar manufacturers can be prevented from just selling
their own lidar. David Schlipf points out that more academic questions might help and also fit to
the planned location of workshop (American Control Conference). Andres Clifton does not see a
problem in this. Eric Simley says that there should be no problem with this issue if we focus on
the question “what is the best lidar configuration for lidar-assisted control”.
Since the feedback from the AB is all positive, since there are no objections, and since David Schlipf
thinks that the proposal is excellent and timely, Eric Simley is nominated by David Schlipf to work
out the workshop.
7. General comments of the AB to the OA
•
•
Detlef Stein asks if the call for proposals is still open. David Schlipf informs that since there have
only been discussed 2 proposals in the meeting, discussion and decision on next workshops will
take place during next AB meeting (teleconference) in December. There are supposed to be 4
workshops per year (one per application).
David Schlipf encourages that further proposals are added to the google docs document and he
adds that all proposals can be commented by the AB members. If there are further questions or
comments to the OA, please write an email to [email protected].
8. Summary of meeting and next steps
•
•
•
•
David Schlipf summarizes the teleconference.
Next steps: David Schlipf will send around minutes and Doodle poll for December teleconference.
There are no further comments from the participants.
David Schlipf closes the meeting at 5:01 pm.
