New Member Pursuit:
My journey through Delta Gamma
New Member Notebook

Letter from the Fraternity President
Dear Delta Gamma New Member:
I am honored to welcome you into membership in Delta Gamma Fraternity. New members are
the hope of our wonderful organization, and hope is a powerful force. Our founders chose Hope
as a guiding force in Delta Gamma, fashioning the first badge as an H to represent Hope. Our
cherished Anchor badge today continues to symbolize the Hope that guides us. Being hope-filled
is who we are and what we are about.
Today, as you begin your membership journey in Delta Gamma, I expect you are hope-filled
and hopeful ... hopeful for an outstanding chapter experience ... hopeful for the special bonds
of friendship that only true sisterhood can reveal … hopeful for a changed world through
involvement with our Foundation ... hopeful for a deeper understanding of yourself in the context
of a value-driven organization that will encourage you to develop as a woman and a leader …
hopeful for meaningful relationships and relevance beyond your college years.
As Fraternity President, I am hopeful, too. Since 1873, Delta Gamma has existed to foster high
ideals of friendship, to promote educational and cultural interests, to create in women a true
sense of social responsibility and the best qualities of character. It is my hope and expectation
that Delta Gamma extends the opportunity for you to achieve these aims. In return, I ask that you
live Hope. Let hope fill your heart and be transformed by the power of all that it offers.
Your journey in Delta Gamma, the choices you make to lead and encourage, begin with this New
Member notebook. Delta Gamma provides tremendous opportunities for members to explore
personal development as an individual. Delta Gamma Fraternity provides many experiences
through planned chapter programming for leadership development, scholastics and living up to
our motto of “Do Good” by giving back to our communities. I want to let you know that the staff
at Executive Offices (EO) work to assist you during your time as a new member and through out
your lifetime membership in Delta Gamma.
Welcome, new sisters, friends, leaders and scholars. In anticipation of your Delta Gamma journey
and upon reflection of my own, I remain hope-filled.
In the Bonds,
Laurie Petrucce Roselle
Beta Iota-Purdue
President, Delta Gamma Fraternity

How to Use This New Member Notebook
and The Shield
Our gift to you … The Shield and your New Member Notebook. These are yours to keep and
refer to throughout your Delta Gamma journey. You will spend time exploring information
within The Shield to learn about the rich history of Delta Gamma Fraternity and Foundation.
The purpose of the New Member Notebook is to be an interactive tool for you to record key
information about Delta Gamma and a keepsake journal to reflect on your thoughts during your
new member period. You will find key sections each week during your new member period that
include:
• Meeting Agenda: This outlines the key activities occurring during the new member
meeting.
• Learning Objective: These are our purposes and goals for each week’s meeting. The
learning objectives provide the fundamentals Delta Gamma new members should have as
their meeting take-aways.
• Pre-Work: This is the reading assignment in The Shield for the upcoming new member
meeting and other Delta Gamma related assignments.
• My DG Thoughts: This is a section for personal reflection and journaling to be completed
outside of the new member meeting. Spending time completing these reflection
questions will create a keepsake and help you to understand the purpose and power of
Delta Gamma.
Be sure to bring both of these books with you to each new member meeting. Our hope is that
you will find both of these informative and fun, and they will be something you will keep for life.
Welcome to your journey.

Defining Hazing
No chapter, colony, student or alumnus shall conduct nor condone hazing activities. Permission or
approval by a person being hazed is not a defense.
Hazing Definition
Hazing is any action taken or situation created, intentionally, whether on or off fraternity
premises, to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment or ridicule. Such
activities may include but are not limited to the following: use of alcohol; paddling in any form;
creation of excessive fatigue; physical and psychological shocks; wearing of public apparel which
is conspicuous and not normally in good taste; engaging in public stunts and buffoonery; morally
degrading or humiliating games and activities; and any other activities which are not consistent
with fraternal law, ritual or policy or the regulations and policies of the educational institution.
Is it Hazing?
Defining hazing is not black and white. Discerning if an activity involves hazing can be difficult
and complex, especially if the activity in question does not involve physical harm. Indeed, trying
to define hazing can lead to arbitrary boundaries or to overly simplistic “lists” of rights and
wrongs that ignore the harmful subtleties that often differentiate hazing from other activities.
Often, it is helpful to consider an activity within a framework of a series of questions that help
evaluate an activity. Such questions are offered below, and they may also be useful when seeking
to learn more about the nature or context of a chapter activity.
• Does the activity promote the values (Article II of the Fraternity Constitution* and ritual)
of Delta Gamma?
If the activity jeopardizes Delta Gamma’s values, the activity may be hazing.
• Does the activity involve mental distress such as humiliation or intimidation?
Examples of such activities may include singling out an individual for not completing an
activity in the allotted amount of time resulting in her having to complete yet another activity
in isolation. Take notice of the context as it is often the context in which the activity is done
that illuminates elements of distress not the activity itself.
• Will the individuals participating be made aware of the activity well in advance?
If the members or new members are not aware of the activity and are notified to be at a
certain location in X number of hours or minutes, this activity may be hazing.
• Is alcohol involved?
Alcohol cannot be involved in any new member activity per Delta Gamma policy.
• Does the activity involve physical abuse?
Often this is the easiest type of hazing to identify. Examples of physical abuse may include
but are not limited to paddling, unsafe or inappropriate scavenger hunts, sleep deprivation,
forced (real or implied) alcohol consumption, drinking games, etc.
• Is there a significant risk of injury or a question of safety?
There are numerous examples of activities that lead to injury or threat to safety. Scavenger hunts
and line-ups are two examples. A scavenger hunt that requires women to race against other teams,
especially in cars, and collect clues or items/pictures of items is a safety concern. Line-ups are also
unsafe because by design, they use intimidation to achieve cohesion or knowledge acquisition.
New Member Pursuit | Notebook | Introduction
6
• Would you have any reservations describing the activity to parents, university officials or
Council/Cabinet/staff?
If a student is hesitant to share the activity or if an activity requires extensive explanation to
“make sense of it” to an outsider, it is likely to have elements of hazing.
• Are there real or perceived consequences for not participating in this activity or completing it appropriately?
If a member or group is not permitted certain rights or privileges, then the activity may be
hazing. Even if the activity only has perceived consequences, it should be avoided.
• Is the activity relevant to Delta Gamma membership?
If individuals are instructed to obtain signatures, memorize information about members or
new members, or complete personal tasks for members, this is not relevant to Delta Gamma
membership.
• Is there another way for the individual to accomplish the task/meet the objective if they
are uncomfortable completing this activity?
If a chapter is asking individuals to complete a team-building activity that is physically
demanding, the chapter needs to utilize the principle of challenge by choice. If an individual is
uncomfortable, she is permitted to say “I am not comfortable with this.” The chapter should
work to involve her in the activity in another way, such as providing the instructions for the
activity, helping the groups strategize, or participating as an active observer where she shares
her observations with the larger group during the processing of the activity. If the activity
asks the individual to share personal information, the same principal of challenge by choice
applies. The woman is only required to share information she is comfortable offering.
Hazing Myths & Facts
Myth: If someone agrees to participate in an activity, it can not be considered hazing.
Fact: In states that have laws against hazing, consent of a victim can not be used as a defense in
a civil suit. In some situations, consent may not be true consent but instead a lack of selfconfidence or a disproportional desire to belong to a group.
Myth: Only new members can be hazed.
Fact: Delta Gamma’s definition of hazing is applied evenly to each member. This means a senior
or sophomore member can be hazed just as a new member can be hazed.
Myth: The Fraternity can legislate hazing compliance.
Fact: Human nature is such that actions speak louder than words. Reading hazing policies are in
sufficient if the actions of the members cast doubt or disrespect on those policies – or
worse, the values of our ritual. Hazing devalues our ritual and renders it ineffective or
seemingly insincere. Newer members are more likely to follow the implied standard
exhibited by older members/leaders rather than the specified standard of Fraternity policy
or procedure enabling chapter culture to prevail. Therefore, chapter culture must align
with Fraternity values and expectations.
*The objects of the Fraternity (known as Article II of the Fraternity Constitution) shall be to
foster high ideals of friendship among college women, to promote their educational and cultural
interests, to create in them a true sense of social responsibility, and to develop in them the best
qualities of character. The objects challenge each Delta Gamma to live our values.

Statement of Obligation Review
If a new member or member violates a piece of the Statement of Obligation, they are brought
into Honor Board. Honor Board has the responsibility to take action in the event a member
or new member commit an infraction (or repeated infractions) of Delta Gamma Fraternity’s
Constitution, policies and procedures, chapter bylaws and standing rules, university/college
rules and regulations or local, state, provincial and federal laws. Depending on the nature of the
violation, members may be held accountable to her Statement of Obligation by either of the
following two procedures:
1. Automatic Procedure (members only) is used to assist Honor Board where it is undisputed
that a specific violation has occurred and where the precise sanction for the violation is set
forth in the chapter’s standing rules and bylaws.
Specific grounds for automatic probation include:
• Chapter debt more than 10 days old
• Dues and Fees Contract not signed by the due date
• Failure to pay fines by due date
• Failure to meet scholastic good standing for the first time
• Failure to meet scholastic good standing for second time, not necessarily consecutive
• Failure to submit grades by due date
• Failure to meet live-in requirements
• Failure to meet terms of housing contract
• Failure to sign housing contract
• Two unexcused absences from meetings and anchored events
• Officer has two unexcused absences from team or board meetings
• Failure to meet Foundation service hour requirements as set fourth in chapter Bylaws and
Standing Rules
When a member is on probation, she is considered to be in poor standing with the Fraternity and
her chapter. Terms of probation must always include:
• Forfeiture of the member’s elected or appointed office
• Forfeiture of member’s vote in chapter meetings with exception of vote to initiate
• Loss of social privileges with the exception of anchored events
• Must attend all anchored events
• A minimum duration of 30 days or until sanction terms are completed, whichever is longer
• Additional sanctions as listed in chapter bylaws and standing rules
2. Standard Procedure is followed where the allegations are subjective in nature or there is
a dispute as to whether a violation has occurred or where the sanction for the violation is
discretionary in nature. All matters concerning a new member must be handled through the
Standard Procedure.
Any member can file an SOR and Honor Board will review the SOR.

Anchored in Courage: Delta Gamma’s Social Responsibility Program
GreekLifeEdu
The purpose of Anchored in Courage is to create a true sense of social responsibility and
promote human dignity, ultimately supporting our member’s efforts to live the Fraternity’s values
throughout their collegiate and alumnae experience.
This purpose stems from Article II of the Fraternity Constitution which challenges us to create a
true sense of social responsibility amongst our membership. Delta Gamma’s Social Responsibility
program consists of multiple elements that are weaved into many facets of the Fraternity’s
programming and operations. One Social Responsibility Program is GreekLifeEdu.
What is GreekLifeEdu?
GreekLifeEdu uses science-based research to educate students. It is a non-opinionated course
that aims not to tell you what to think but to help you make decisions for yourself and effectively
deal with the behavior of your peers.
How does GreekLifeEdu work?
The course has two parts:
What are the requirements for GreekLifeEdu?
Each new member must complete Part 1 (i.e., Module 1, Module 2, and Module 3) and pass the
GreekLifeEdu Exam in Part 1 with a score of 75%, seven days prior to the chapters scheduled
Inspiration in order to be initiated. After the 30 day intersession, we ask new members to
complete part 2.
The course includes three surveys that offer you feedback on your attitudes and behaviors. All
survey responses are strictly confidential; Delta Gamma will only receive information about our
organization as a whole and will never see individual members’ responses.

Delta Gamma Policies and Bylaws and Standing Rules
The policies listed below are not an exhaustive list of Delta Gamma policies, but ones that are
pertinent for every new member to be aware of and abide by.
Alcohol
Alcohol is forbidden at all Delta Gamma fundraising events that involve athletic performance
and/or require maximum mental alertness and physical condition of participants. Refer to Fund
Raising Precautions for more information.
Alcohol/Event Attendance
Members and new members may not be required to attend any collegiate function where alcohol
is available.
Alcohol/Event Sponsors
Delta Gamma Fraternity or Foundation functions may not be sponsored by distributors of
alcoholic beverages.
Alcohol/Inspiration and Initiation
Pre- and post-events/activities (sponsored or co-sponsored) wherein alcoholic beverages are
available may take place no less than 48 hours prior to Inspiration/Initiation nor 24 hours after
Inspiration/Initiation/Celebration. The Celebration is to be an alcohol-free event.
Alcohol/Pre-Event
Pre- and post-event activities (sponsored or cosponsored by Delta Gamma) where alcoholic
beverages are available may take place no less than 48 hours prior to a fund-raising event or 24
hours after the event.
Alcoholic Beverages/Chapter/Fraternity Funds
Chapter and/or Fraternity funds may not be used for the purchase of alcoholic beverages.
Alcoholic Beverages/Delta Gamma Property
No alcoholic beverages may be served or stored on Delta Gamma property. Note: Property
is defined as houses, apartments, lodges, suites, dorms, dorm floors and meeting rooms. This
includes yards, driveways, sidewalks, and parking lots owned, rented, leased or designated for
Delta Gamma use by house corporations or chapters.
Alcohol/Big/Little Sister Revealing
No events/activities (individual or group) where in alcoholic beverages are available may take
place within 24 hours after big/little sister revealing.
Alumna Status
Collegiate chapter membership is not based on the number of terms of registration or the
number of credits carried. It is normally for four years. A woman who is in school for a fifth-year as
an undergraduate and who has completed at least two years of membership in the Fraternity may
assume alumna status with the approval of the Advisory Team Chairman. Only Council may grant
early alumna status for “extreme circumstances.” Requests for early alumnae status for “extreme
circumstances” must be in writing and submitted to Honor Board. After Honor Board and
Advisory Team Chairman review, the request must be sent to the Regional Collegiate Specialist
who reviews the request and, if in support, forwards it to Council. Honor Board cannot grant early
alumna status.
New Member Pursuit | Notebook | Week 3
29
Attendance/Collegiate Members
Every member of a collegiate chapter is required to attend all chapter meetings and functions
relating to membership selection, ritual and the Founders. General absence may be excused only
by the Regional Collegiate Specialist. Other absences are handled in the manner designated in
the chapter standing rules.
Badge
Only initiated members of the Fraternity who are in good standing may wear the badge.
Candle/Open Flame
Open flames/candles may not be used in chapter facilities without the written consent of their
Advisory Team Chairman or their House Corporation President.
Chapter Quota/Total
All collegiate chapters are expected to pledge to quota and total through formal recruitment
and/or continuous open bidding. A chapter below quota and/or total must submit a detailed
continuous open bidding plan to the Director of Collegiate Recruitment by November 1 and
April 1 each year.
Fraternity Crest-Gifts and Stationery
Only initiated members of Delta Gamma may use stationery bearing the Fraternity crest. Parents
Clubs may not use stationery bearing the Fraternity crest.
Hazing
Chapters are not permitted to impose menial or personal tasks or to allow any form of hazing.
Any chapter officer responsible for allowing such activities shall be removed from office. Delta
Gamma policy strictly forbids hazing, which is defined as any act or tradition that endangers
the physical, mental or emotional well-being of a new member and/or member, that requests,
encourages or suggests violation of city, county, provincial, state or national law; is mentally or
physically degrading; or requires a personal or menial task of a new member and/or member,
regardless of location, intent or consent of the participants. Examples of hazing include, but
are not limited to, embarrassing and/or required stunts or costumes; harassing; interrogating;
line-ups; kidnapping; “tuck-ins;” personal services; drinking or eating on command, request or
suggestion; deprivation of sleep or food; authority over new members and/or members; anything
that tends to diminish the self-esteem and dignity or categorize the new member and/or member
as a second-class person. Hazing corrupts the true meaning of Fraternity life; it negates the
values of loyalty, hope, trust, supportive friendship, kindness and compassion that Delta Gamma
affirms. The moral integrity of the chapter is inseparable from the conduct of its members.
Because Delta Gamma supports the integrity and dignity of women; basic human rights; decency,
honor, gracious living and positive reinforcement of each other; there is no place for hazing
(which is negative and archaic) in our Fraternity of women.
New Member Pin
The new member pin may be worn only by Delta Gamma new members or members and must
be purchased from the approved Fraternity Jeweler.
New Member Pin/Return
New member pins must be collected by the chapter upon Initiation or termination of a new
member’s pledge period. If a member wishes to purchase a new member pin, Executive Offices,
can direct her. It may be made into a lavaliere, charm or pin.

Case Study Scenarios for Review
Read the following scenarios and determine which policies are violated.
1) Sally DG is so excited to become a Delta Gamma new member. Immediately following Bid
Day, she visited the local Greek clothing shop and purchased a sweatshirt with the Delta
Gamma letters on the front. She has been wearing it to class ever since.

2) During Week 4 of the new member period, Omega Omega chapter of Delta Gamma
is preparing for big/little revealing. The agenda for the night includes: embarrassing
costumes for new members to wear, a scavenger hunt around the chapter house to find
the big sister, and a barbeque at the chapter house with alcohol.
3) Anchor Games are a great way to raise money for the Delta Gamma Foundation. The vp:
Foundation has contacted Bob’s Bar and Grill to be a sponsor. Bob’s Bar and Grill will
provide alcohol for the event and will sponsor an “after-party” for the fraternity that wins
Anchor Games immediately following.
4) Because she is busy working and studying, Susie DG only attends Delta Gamma functions
when she has time which isn’t often.
5) Sailor Sis has been busy posting pictures on Facebook. She has uploaded photos that
do not represent Article II and makes reference to the fact she is a Delta Gamma. Sailor
Sis has also tagged photos of several other underage members who are drinking in their
letters.

First Initiation Address (1874)
Dear Sisters,
You are now members of the Delta Gamma Club. Ours is an
associate sisterhood based upon sincere desire for mutual
improvement: its cementing element is love; its stimulating
principle, truth, its WATCHWORD, duty…
You may imagine our duties too laborious, or discipline too
exacting, but while we would extend to you the encouragement
and sympathy of sisters, we would warn you, with equal fidelity,
that nothing good or great was ever achieved without toil and
attention, and it is because we would have you prepare for
an honorable womanhood, that here in the morning of life we
stimulate you to constant earnest effort.
Be faithful to yourself, act well to your part and then, when life’s
young dream is past, the battles of life fought and won, and the
mellow light of evening gathers round your pathway, the scenes
enacted here will rise upon the evening sky to cheer and comfort
you.

Hey Look Us Over
Hey look us over
Give us the eye.
We’re Delta Gammas
And we can tell you why.
We’ve got the friendship,
We’ve got the fun,
We’re merry and gay as a meadow in May
And we’re always on the run.
So if you go for the glamour,
Go for the class
Go Delta Gamma like every classy lass
If you’re looking for a Fraternity that right as

Will You Wear Our Anchor
Music: Civil War Folk Song
Lyrics: Diane Turner, Gamma Tau-Texas Christian,
Initiated 1964
Will you wear our anchor,
Will you be the one
Who will be our new sister?
When morning comes?
Will you sail tomorrow
On the Delta G.
To new harbors of friendship
That you’ve yet to see
Our captain is calling
Soon you will be gone,
But remember that DG
New Member Pursuit | Notebook | Songs
Is where you belong.
Will you wear our anchor
Wear our pin with pride
Will you be our new sister
You must decide.
When You Go
Music: Jesus Walked This Lonesome Valley
Lyrics: Evelyn Quinn Sperry, Gamma Nu-North
Texas, Initiated 1955
When you go away to college,
You must choose your goals in life
For nobody else can choose them for you,
You have to choose them for yourself.
You must also choose your sisters,
Sisters for your whole life through,
For nobody else can choose them for you,
You have to choose them for yourself.
Watch the girls who wear the anchor,
They’re the ones who will be true,
And then you will know that Delta Gamma
Is the only one for you.
The Girl Who’s Beside Me
Music: Come Saturday Morning
Lyrics: Diane Turner, Gamma Tau-Texas Christian,
Initiated 1964
The girl who’s beside me,
Is wearing an anchor like me,
Is hoping my dreams will come true every day.
She’s more than my friend,
She follows a path with a sparkling laugh,
Her daffodil ways
Will always remind me
Sunshine of sisterhood days.
The girl who’s beside me
The girl who’s beside me.
The girl who’s beside me
Will shower her laugh to the wind,
Will capture the time that our college days lend.
If time be our friend
We’ll share all the follies that life will allow,
And then we’ll move on,
53
But we will remember, even if sisterhood’s gone.
The girl who’s beside me,
The girl who’s beside me.
The girl who’s beside me,
The girl who’s beside me.
Sisters
Music: Barges
Out of our windows looking in the night,
We can see those anchors shining bright.
Silently flows the river to the sea
As we sail aboard the Delta G.
(Chorus)
Sisters, we would like to go with you,
We would like to sail the ocean blue.
Sisters, have you treasures in your hold
When you wear your anchor pin of gold?
Out of our windows looking in the night,
We can see those anchors shining bright.
Stars are all around and the moon is up above
Looking down upon our DG love.
Chorus)
Out of our windows looking in the night,
We can see those anchors shining bright.
How my heart longs to sail away with you
As we sail across the ocean blue.

Our ship will never fail to anchor.

‘Round here it’s the very best thing
All you gotta do is pledge DG
Now listen to the DG’s sing.
We’re singing
Do do do di wop wop
Do do do di wop wop
Do do do di wop wop
Do di wop wop, DG
Del-ta Gamma, Delta, Delta Gamma
Welcome, Remember this we hope
You go DG
We’re singing
(Chorus)
