PRESIDENT
What a great year was had by all. We should all stand tall and be proud to be part of
this great Association. We all contributed in our own way to make this such an
outstanding and memorable year.
Many thanks to every member of this current Executive for their hard work during the
past 12 months. We do not have an off season as such, so they work tirelessly
throughout the whole year. Your friendship also means a great deal to me and each
and every one of you has extended your warm hand of friendship over many years.
Big hug to Lara for always being there for me.
Congratulations to our new National C Badges: Kara Matthews, Destiny Apatu, Zoe
Felton, Torren Eyles-Balukea, Marcus Puroku, Helen Goldsmith, Jessica Mok, Grace
Greenhalgh, Amy Greenhalgh, Meaghan Farleigh, Amy Grady and Mario Ao for
achieving her National B Badge. I was priviledged enough to be a part of some of
your panels and I can honestly say that talent we have here at St. George never
ceases to amaze me.
Thank you to our representative and domestic sponsors and partners: Club Rivers,
Netstrata, Champion System, McDonalds, Rocksia Hotel, Sportsworld Indoor –
Peakhurst, Yoganic Frozen Yoghurt – Brighton Le-Sands; without your support we
could not exist.
I would like to congratulate our junior representative teams on a good year. I am
confident that you have learnt new skills from your wonderful coaches, which will
take you forward next year. Thank you to all coaches and managers; Sarah, Laura,
Tracey; Jane, Robyn, Julie; Denyse, Lorraine, Shellie, Chris; Steve and Lisa. Your
hard work and commitment has helped the Association grow and we all appreciate
your desire to improve netball at St. George.
Thank you to our Over 40s ladies at State Championship who finished third and took
out the premiership in their division at Masters. Congratulations to our 2013 Night
Interdistrict Div. 1 team who finished runners up.
To Teresa, Colleen and our Cook Island team, it was a pleasure having you on
board. Good luck in the future. Thank you for the lovely framed photo you so
generously presented to us at the Representative Dinner; it shall hang proudly in our
Control Centre.
To Fee, Ines and our Div. 7 team, you had such a great start but unfortunately
injuries took their toll. Looking forward to watching you achieve your dreams next
season. Hold your heads up high, you will all go places.
To Evan, Marguerite and our Div. 6 team, thanks for all your hard work and for
representing St. George in such a lovely manner. We are proud of you all.
To Drew, Nick, Lindsay, Natalie, Mikaela, Lauren, Tenae, Tara, Zoe, Alison, Grace,
Nicole, Belinda and Astrid – our Div. 3 team. Thank you for everything you have
5
achieved on behalf of St. George this season. You helped us make history and your
efforts will never been forgotten.
I apologise for not being at the grand final but my brother was being operated on for
cancer and I had to be there with him. My thoughts were with you all through and
Lara kindly kept me updated. But having watched you play in the final and witnessing
your brilliant skills, I knew in my heart you would win the premiership. Besides, Drew
told me you would and that was good enough for me.
To Moira, Heath, Deb, Fudge, Kimberly, Holly, Kaitlyn, Belynda, Katie, Nicole,
Kristiana, Daisy, Claire, Blossom and April – our Waratah Cup team. Wow – just
wow! You made history, you were mentioned in Parliament and you made me cry –
what can I say? The selectors told me right from the start that this was the team to
take out the Waratah Cup – the team that would put St. George on the map – the
best team ever they said.
Well they were certainly right. Each and every one of you made us proud. Record
crowds at the game shows you just how much support you had from this great
Association – and you did not let us down. We couldn’t be prouder of you all.
Congratulations Belynda on receiving the President’s Award for the Best Player on
Court. Kim, when I said I loved you after you won the major semi-final I meant it.
You are an exceptional player who never ceases to amaze me; you can land on
a five cent piece, catch the ball, not step, and shoot a goal!. Each one of you
brought your special gifts to our Association. From our home grown girls, Daisy,
Claire, Blossom and Bel to our adopted crew. Our coaches are the best in the
State - just fantastic.
I received a text message from former Waratah Cup manager, Barry Weston
saying ‘Waratah Cup Premiers, Div. 3 Premiers, South Sydney Rabbitohs
Premiers – what a great year you have had Linda’ – so true. Sporting wise, it
was the best year ever.
Congratulations to Moira – the Executive have decided to name the new
representative room in our Control Centre the Moira Gaha Representative
Room. Such a great honour for our wonderful Waratah Cup coach. Moira has
been an important part of this Association for so many years, having coached
at both junior and senior level and having played for St. George as well.
Moira is supported by her wonderful husband Al and her two young sons
who have been coming to netball since before they were actually born! Yes,
Moira never let anything stop her from following her dreams and her success
at both Association and State Levels speak for itself. Thank you Moira.

Congratulations to Waratah Cup player Katilyn Bryce who was awarded the
the Nance Kenny OAM Medal for the State League Player of the Year and
our Patron Marilyn Melhuish OAM for being inducted into the Netball NSW
Hall of Fame at the Netball NSW State Dinner. Congratulations to our State
and ANL representatives; Moira, Deb, Claire, Natalie, Holly, Kara, Nicole,
Kaitlyn and Kristiana for their selection and consistent performances
throughout the season.
Thanks to all the Clubs for their friendship and support and to all the parents
who take the time to ring, email or speak with me during the season, your
support and friendship mean so much to me.
I wish you all a wonderful Christmas and I do hope that 2015 is the year in which all
your dreams come true.

VICE PRESIDENT
It has been a fantastic year for St. George netball with a growth in our junior teams
and amazing wins for State League one and three. I have been so proud to be a part
of this executive that has seen such historical events and the formation of a strong
and exciting partnership between St George DNA and UTS. I would like to take the
time to thank our major sponsors; Club Rivers, Netstrata, McDonalds, Rocksia Hotel,
Yoganic Frozen Yogurt - Brighton Le-Sands and Sportsworld Indoor- Peakhurst.
Next year we look forward to increasing our sponsorships for both representative
netball and our domestic competition.
Thanks to all of the executive who have supported me this year, my first year back
on executive in a great many years. It has been a steep learning curve and I
thoroughly enjoyed the challenges thrown at me on Saturdays down at St. George. I
wish to take the time to thank the President and Secretary for their leadership of the
associations and make particular note of the successful years ahead for us at St.
George due to their vision and hard work. We have also seen the umpires at St.
George netball shine and have added numerous new C badges and a new B Badge
to our talent pool, this is encouraging and a sign that we are becoming an
association to watch. I wish everyone the best for season 2015 and a very happy
and safe 2014 off season.
O’Bray Smith
Vice President

SECRETARY
Season 2014 has been one of the most successful seasons in the Association’s
history and it was wonderful to be part of. Some of the successes to note:
We achieved some great things on the Representative front with April Letton once
again being selected into the NSW Swifts, and holding NSWIS World Class
Scholarship (2013 - 2016). Newcomer Natalie Eldridge was selected into the NSW
19s finishing 5th and St. George junior, Claire O’Brien was selected into the NSW
17s and the Australian 17s squad. The NSW 17s finished runner up at Nationals.
Kristiana Manu’a was selected into the NSW 21s finishing 3rd and selected into the
Australian 21s squad. She was also invited to the AIS for a defence specialist camp.
Claire O’Brien, Kara Styles and Holly Pearce were selected into the NSW Blues in
the Australia Netball League (ANL) finishing 8th. Kaitlyn Bryce, Nicole Styles and
Kristiana Manu’a were selected into the NSW Waratahs finishing 4th.
Kaitlyn Bryce was awarded the Nance Kenny State League Player of the Year at the
Netball NSW State Dinner while Belynda Loveday was presented the President’s
Award at the Waratah Cup grand final. Marilyn Melhuish OAM was inducted into the
Netball NSW Hall of Fame as acknowledgement of her appointments as Australian
Team Manager, President Netball NSW and President Netball Australia and
Australian Delegate to Asian Netball Federation.
Moira Gaha was appointed Head Coach of the NSW 17s and Assistant Coach for
the NSW Waratahs. Natalie Eldridge, Claire O’Brien were selected into the Sydney
Netball Academy Open Squad. Deborah Kassing was appointed Manager of the
NSW 17s and Manager to the Sydney Netball Academy. Helen Andrews was
appointed as a scorer to ANZ Championships and a scorer at the recent Test
between Australia and New Zealand.
We made history in 2014 winning 2 State League premierships after coming minor
premiers in both Waratah Cup and Division 3. We won the Waratah Cup division for
the first time in our history and we did so with record crowds.
The Executive received a proposal from the Cook Islands Sport and Recreation with
regards to a team of Cook Islander players playing under the St. George banner in
order to promote pathways into national representative netball for their players. The
team was entered in as a whole following a selection and did both their organisation
and the Association proud finishing 6th in State League Division 8. The Association
was proud to have given this group of passionate women the opportunity to play
netball in the Dooleys State League competition.
I would like to acknowledge the brilliant coverage that St. George received from Paul
Haigh from the St. George/Sutherland Leader. He reported on all our successes this
year and it has been great experience working with a wonderful and keen sports
journalist who is following our achievements and raising the profile of netball in the
local community.
9
It has been my absolute pleasure to be part of the St. George/UTS Working Party as
we apply to Netball NSW for a franchise in the Premier League competition, due to
roll out in 2016. St. George will be partnering with UTS for the franchise and this
partnership will create opportunities for players through all representative levels with
the Association. While specifics are still being developed, this is very promising for
our future and we are very grateful for this opportunity. Many thanks to the working
party; Heath Brown, Moira Gaha, Deb Kassing and Fudge Atshan for their insight
and passion into making this franchise a potential reality. What this space for
updates.

I would like to extend my thanks and gratitude to a few people who have been a
great support to me during the last 12 months:
Helen Andrews – thank you so much for your ongoing support and knowledge of
everything St. George. Thank you for being a sounding board, wealth of knowledge
and strong advocate of our Association.
10
Finally, Linda Free – your friendship is much more than the business of netball to
me. Thank you for continuing to answer my calls, responding to my emails and texts
and organising occasional meeting to discuss those countless phone calls, texts and
emails about everything and nothing. You are a special person with a heart of gold.
We move forward to 2015 with the Netball World Cup hosted in Sydney thus bringing
the commencement of our season forward and Netball NSW moving to their new
home - Netball Central (Sydney Olympic Park). We look toward the promotion of
individual online registrations. We will partner with the University of Technology,
Sydney (UTS) to establish representative pathways for our future - bring on 2015;

COACHING CO-ORDINATOR
In 2014, we unfortunately only had enough participants to run one Foundation
Coaching Course. We did have a Development Course available however due to a
lack of numbers we had to cancel the course. We did try more advertising and
emails were repeatedly sent to Clubs however, we do not have the interest within the
Association to progress from Foundation Coaching Certificates to Development
Certificates at this stage. Netball NSW did however advise us towards the end of the
season that they would be running a couple of Development coaching courses at
Netball NSW for those interested coaches. This information was passed on to the
interested participants
.
Following the Foundation Coaching course, many coaches were interested in
progressing their coaching in the future.
DEVELOPMENT CAMP
We ran the Development camp at the beginning of the Representative season and
there was all good feedback, with some suggestions on how to improve the
experience for players.
We had a sports psychologist and nutritionist come to meet with the players and the
parents with the nutritionist. The parents were very interested in the presentation
with the nutritionist and it was quite interactive. We also had fitness testers come out
to assess the players. Unfortunately, due to the very busy schedules of teams
leading into State Age, we were unable to arrange a retest; this is something that
could definitely be improved in 2015 with more planning with the coaching staff.
We had four Waratah Cup players assist with specialist coaching sessions; both the
players and coaches found this very valuable and was a different perspective for the
players and something to aspire to, especially given the results of 2014.
TID COACHING PROGRAM
Throughout the year, I have been contacting Club Coaching Convenors and asking
them to advise me of who they would like the Coaching Committee to work with
however have not received responses from the Club Coaching Convenors.
Coaching Convenors and Council Delegates were advised of training times for the
Junior Representative teams and that they just needed to advise me when they/or
their coaches wished to attend training so that coaches could be advised and speak
to them during the course of the session. I however only received a couple of
messages towards the end of the season once training had finished after State Age.

STATE LEAGUE DIVISION 1 ‘WARATAH CUP PREMIERS’
This season was a fantastic season for our Division 1 team, a history making season
by winning our first ever Waratah Cup Trophy. Their pre-season trip to QLD was a
highlight and an excellent pre-season preparation for the season. The march to the
finals started from the very first game, defeating 2013 premiers Eastwood Ryde by a
resounding 18 goals and then beating our number 1 rivals and 2013 runners up
Sutherland by 9 in the 3rd game.
They met Eastwood Ryde again in the 2nd round going down by 10, which was their
only loss recorded for the season. Being the minor premiers, in the semi final they
came up against Sutherland with a resounding win 60-45 taking them straight to the
grand final. Grand final brought them up against Eastwood Ryde. The team clearly
showed they meant business and were out to take the title.
Winning 52-38, a win by 14 goals. An outstanding game by the team with Belynda
Loveday winning the President’s award being named MVP of the match. Kim Borger
winning the Marilyn Melhuish OAM St George State League Player of the Year and
Kaitlyn Bryce winning the Netball NSW Nance Kenny OAM, State League Player of
the year.

next season in defence of their Waratah Cup title.
STATE LEAGUE DIVISION 3 ‘PREMIERS’
16
A fantastic season, this Division 3 team had a successful QLD pre-season
preparation, which got them in good stead for the season proper. Division 3 was a
close fought competition from start to finish for most of the teams. Our team was
competitive from start to finish, never following a loss with another. Finishing minor
premiers on for and against points by 0.08%.
Playing the second placed team, Northern Suburbs in the semi final 45-47 a 2 goal
loss only inspired them on to come back fighting in the final with a 51-42 defeat over
Kuring-Gai to take them to the Grand final. What a grand final, they were hungry for
the title and learning so much about their opponents Northern Suburbs in the semis,
they knew what was needed. Victors of a resounding 55-30 win, a 25 goal win.
Natalie Eldridge represented NSW 19’s
Thank you to the players, Drew & Nick for their wonderful efforts and sportsmanship
over the season. Congratulations on moving up to Division 2, a well deserved
reward. We look forward to seeing you on court, good luck next season.
STATE LEAGUE DIVISION 6
This team came 9th this season. The girls came together as a new team this year
with some older players returning after a few years out of State League and some
younger players coming up from Division 7 last season.
An up and down season, some close games that were lost by small margins with
some injures at crucial times during the season. The team trained hard but just could
not get the wins on the close games. Thank you to Evan for your efforts, commitment
and sportsmanship throughout the season. We wish all players well for the next
season.
STATE LEAGUE DIVISION 7
17
This team came in 6th this season. The girls trained hard and gave 100% effort in
both their games and training each week. Congratulations to the players for your
efforts. Thank you to Fiona and Ines for your commitment, efforts and
sportsmanship throughout the season. We wish you well for the next season.
STATE LEAGUE DIVISION 8
This team came 6th this season. This team was the Cook Islands team; Tai came to
us at the beginning of the season to see if they could play State League for St.
George in preparation for trials for the Cook Island national team. The girls came as
a team after a number of players trialling for the 12 spots in the team. Under the
guidance of Teresa Tairi coaching and Colleen Tairi managing the team trained hard
and played hard every game, we were proud to have them play in our St George
uniform. Thank you to the players, Teresa, Colleen, Tai and Aia for your
sportsmanship and representing St George. Good Luck to all the players seeking
selection into the Cook Island National team, we hope to see you at the World Cup.
STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS 40s
St. George fielded only one team this year, our 40s team. State Championships for
the 40s were held at Camden this year. The team came in 4th after the 3 days play.
Extremely competitive with only losing a couple of games by very small margins. The
ladies had a wonderful weekend and are always proud to represent St. George in the
masters divsiions. Thank you to the players and we look forward to seeing them
again next season at State Champs.
18
MASTERS CHAMPIONSHIPS OVER 35s ‘CHAMPIONS’
Another wonderful achievement for St. George. These ladies thoroughly enjoy their
netball and are so proud to represent St. George. They say they just want to play for
fun but the competitive streak comes out from the first whistle every game. They
push themselves and their teammates to success each game. Their run through the
tournament was flawless being undefeated. We are so proud to have them play for
St George and to bring home the crystal this year is such a fantastic result. We are
looking forward to a few more years for these lovely ladies playing their beloved
sport netball.
With such a successful season for our senior representatives, remember that with
commitment, teamwork, hard work & passion for the game, better play & good
results will come and they have for us in 2014, let’s keep the ball rolling to bigger and
better for the coming seasons.
I congratulate all involved. Thanks to all the coaches and managers for their
continued work with the teams, we are truly grateful for all your time and efforts. A
big thank you to those who supported me over the season, it is truly appreciated.

It was a very windy, cold State Age. We were able to use the marquee on Saturday
but after gale force winds on Saturday night, we weren’t able to use them on Sunday
and Monday.
Thank you to Chris Rowe for organising the accommodation at the Wollongong Surf
Leisure Resort. I haven’t heard any negativity regarding this. I thought it was
fantastic accommodation and no problems with bus or bus driver.
Thank you to all our support people/chaperones – Kelly Holtz, Sarah Watson, Daisy
Kennedy-Holtz, Jess Vieira, Sean Bolton. Thank you to Tai Ben and Marlise
Edmondston and the amazing umpires - fantastic job.
Thank you to Yvonne Fowler, our physio for all teams and Cathie Books, massage
therapist for the 15s. We had two strappers – Phil Wano and Joe Vieira. Thank you
to these guys. They turned up early each morning to strap the girls and were there
for the girls all day, every day.
Last but not least, thank you to the coaches and managers. I couldn’t have done this
without them. Each manager was very helpful so thank you to Lisa Watson, Chris

JUNIOR COMPETITION CO-ORDINATOR
The 2014 netball season has been an extremely busy and interesting season. For
the first time in a number of years, the junior competition has grown to over 100
teams. There were 18 divisions ranging from Div 1 (15/16A) down to Div 18 (9B). We
welcomed one new club, Titans and we farewelled Penshurst West who have played
with St George for a number of years.
Congratulations goes to Oatley RSL Sapphire who won the Oatley RSL Trophy for
Best Goal Average in the junior competition. The winner of the Gus Gosling trophy
for junior contribution to the game was Oatley RSL.
This year, we rebranded the NetSetGO! competition as the Red Dragons and White
Dragons. 11 teams participated in this competition and one of the highlights was to
have Swifts player and NetSetGO! ambassador Susan Pratley visit the players and
have their team photo taken with her. Fun Net aka Dragonettes also operated in
each Saturday with approximately 25 children.
Congratulations go to all teams that played in the Grand Finals for 2014. The results
are as follows:
Division 1

This year, MyNetball was introduced by Netball Australia. It is the online computer
system used to register players, create fixtures, enter results, produce ladders etc.
Many hours have been spent learning this system and I would like to thank all for
being patient with me while trying to work out this system. Next year, some clubs
plan to expand on this and use the online registration section by the players, in an
attempt, to reduce their paper work.

Thank you to Deb Cummins, Margaret Bensley, Taiura Ben-Vavia and Martin
Doohan who were members of the junior grading committee. It is never an easy
task and we try to make everyone happy. Their time is much appreciated by me as
the convenor.
Finally I would like to thank all the umpires that umpired week in and week out so
that the junior competition could play each week. Also thank you to all those people
that have helped me this year. Hoping to see everyone back next year and that the
junior competition continues to grow.

NIGHT COMPETITION CO-ORDINATOR
Night Competition this year was somewhat disappointing during the winter with a
drop in teams from previous years. Only 8 teams competed and played each other
once prior to being split into 2 divisions.
Div. 1 was taken out by Chillies who defeated Allsorts in the grand final and Div. 2
was won by my favourite team Grace Alliance who had their first comp win defeating
Violet Femmes. While a small competition, it was enjoyed by all participants and
games were friendly and trouble free.
The Summer Night Competition is still in progress at date of writing this report.
In the Summer competition we have 34 junior teams and 19 senior teams.
I had to knock several teams back as they applied late and we weren’t able to
accommodate any more due to court space restrictions. With more lights we could
easily take another 30 teams but that costs money. Hopefully we can increase our
court lighting in the future.
All up, the night competition netted the association approximately $23,000 this year
which is a huge revenue source and needs to be nurtured into the future.
Thanks to Marg Bensley for her help together with my wife Helen, daughter Lisa,
Sam Golding and Jenny Wise who give their time ensure this comp runs smoothly.
Thanks also to my great pool of umpires who do a great job every week.
For those that haven’t been told, I am stepping down from the executive after the
end of the season as I have a great deal of travel to do now that I am in my semi
retirement years which makes running night competition impossible.
As such, the association will need someone to step up and take this task on.
Admittedly it is a big commitment but is an essential one if St George Netball is to
survive financially. Someone thinking of a career in Sports Management would be
ideally suited to this and I am always willing to assist and guide the new recruit.

NETSETGO!
DRAGONETTES PROGRAM
Dragonettes was run by Jane Mathews, with the assistance of Kara Mathews and
the 14 years Junior Representative Team. The suggestions that were provided by
last year’s co-ordinators were taken on board and the following changes
implemented:
 Participants were registered and paid online and a printout provided to the
Co-ordinator.
 Parents had the program explained to them and the purpose of the
Dragonettes Program.
 Participants were only accepted if they were between 5 -7 years of age.
 There were fewer participants than last year.
 Bean bags were available as well as small netballs.
 Court near the bridge was allocated to Dragonettes for the duration of the
season.
Players seemed to enjoy themselves and learnt a lot from the program. Hopefully
next year there will be more participants again.
WHITE DRAGONS AND RED DRAGONS
Following the requests and suggestions by coaches and parents the format of the
NetSetGO! program was changed for this season. Teams played full games (4x10
min quarters) without a training session prior to the game and most teams trained
during the week.
Net Set Go was divided into Red and White Dragons. White Dragons were younger
players and the less experienced ie; hadn’t played NetSetGO! before. Red Dragons
were older players and the more experienced and had played NetSetGO! before.
A meeting was held at the beginning of the season to speak to parents and explain
their roles and responsibilities as NetSetGO! parents. The purpose of the program
was explained and there was a package distributed to all the clubs to forward on to
their teams and parents.
Further discussions with coaches need to be held to discuss any issues they find
with the program and anything they think could improve the experience for both
coaches and players.
Overall the program ran well with few issues throughout the course of the season.

PHYSIOTHERAPY
2014 saw another great success of Netball for St George District. This year we
encouraged players to take advantage of a Donjoy offer with ankle braces costing
almost half of other brands. There were 42 ankle sprains this year, but this was 17%
less than last year. Attendances for acute injuries were 165 and 560 preventative
strapping or taping of existing injuries or weaknesses. Injuries accounted for 25% of
attendances.
There were 20 significant injuries that needed x-ray or medical assessment followup. There were 4 suspected ankle fractures needing x-rays, 2 dislocated fingers, 5
patello femoral dislocations and a wrist and elbow fracture. We needed 2
ambulances this year. One ambulance was required to assess a player with
exhaustion and hyper ventilation, and one for a player’s grandmother who had come
to watch the Grand Final and slipped and fractured an elbow.
There was lots of excitement for the Final Series and lots of strapping. We also
made it into the St. George/Sutherland Leader this year with photos of the Grand
Final Day. This year we had the help of two physiotherapy students from Macquarie
University who assisted and got some valuable experience of sports coverage.
I look forward to another exciting year in 2015 and would like to make my services
available to you again.
