CLUB CHAT
19.05.16 V OLUME 57 I SSUE 42
We enjoyed a double billing last week, with Alyssa Jatau our wonderful Rotary
Youth Exchange student talking about her trip around the North Island, and Alfie
Alojado describing his new business, i-sigNZ.
Alyssa Jatau
Alfie Alojado
Alyssa has recently enjoyed an amazing trip with
fellow RYE students, in
which she travelled from
Wellington to Cape Reinga, visiting many places
in between. She is grateful
to those who sponsored her and loved the sights
and experiences. But after her explorations, where
would she rather live, the North Island or the
Mainland? “The South Island of course!”, she answered promptly. Good answer Alyssa, not that
we are biased.
Alfie is a man with tremendous energy, courage
and business acumen. He
left his home in the Philippines to settle on the
other side of the world in
NZ, has conquered the
challenge of speaking
English and has just created a company, ‘i-sigNZ’
in this, his third year as a
Rotarian.
i-sigNZ specialises in corporate signage for the local and
international market, with the tag line of ‘We Keep Your
Name Up Front’. Alfie works mainly from home, creating
state-of-the-art graphics for shop windows, billboards,
street signs, vehicles and boats, using digital technology.
Alfie believes that the key to success in building a business is networking and developing relationships, which
Rotary helps him to do. In fact Papanui
member John Milne is Alfie’s business
mentor, for which he is very grateful.
Good luck Alfie!
Earthquake Survey
Keith Mitchell has advised The Chat
about an interesting opportunity.
Massey University is researching the
response of EQC and insurers to earthquake claims. If you’ve had dealings
with EQC and insurers, please fill out
the tick-box and experiences survey at
www.quakesurvey.co.nz They want to
capture all stories, good and bad. Recording the experiences of Canterbury people is vital, and they
urge all claimants to participate. Please forward this link to your
friends and colleagues.
District 9970
Conference
October 2016
Last week’s conference in Nelson, hosted by Districts 9940 & 9970, was a great success and
heaps of fun. 400 delegates attended, 256 from
9970. There were superb speakers, including Billy
Graham who teaches life skills to at-risk youth
through physical activity; Judge Andrew Beacroft, soon-to-be commissioner for children;
Louise Nicholas, lecturer in domestic violence at
the Police training academy; and Michael
McQueen, on communicating with young people
and the changing face of Rotary.
The merry band from Rotary Papanui had an
awesome time, dancing late into the night and
picking up some good ideas for our up-coming
conference in October.

Rob and Sue Nicholl are in Florence,
having recently been to Rome. They
were sorry to miss the Pope but enjoyed the Vatican and the view from
the top of St Peters.

Rotary members were special guests of the pontiff. Peace, polio eradication,
