“Do not think I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish
them but to fulfill them.”
----- Matthew 5:17 NIV
The Doctrinal Dilemma
What exactly is your take on what it means to be “Christian?” Is “Christian” a broad-stroke
term that people can self-select to connect with? Or is it a narrower label in which certain
stipulations must be adhered to?
The answers to these questions are as numerable as the people who are asking them.
The earliest followers had some first-hand knowledge by being in Jesus’ presence, but still had
their share of foibles and misunderstandings. The Gospels certainly don’t provide us with a
true systematic theology of doctrine and discipline. The early church attempted to bring things
under control by the construction of creeds that actually say very little about how to put belief
into practice. Early catechisms provided questions and “right” answers as the faith was
concerned. Since the Reformation, doctrines have been the pawns in the game of
denominational separatism, discord, and outright hatred.
Jesus himself seemed to be stumped on the whole issue of doctrinal correctness. On one hand
he talks about fulfillment of the Jewish laws and then goes about the work of violating the very
law he says he is fulfilling (of course, management reserves the right to make exceptions to
company policy).
We’re only about a year away from the 2016 General Conference of the United Methodist
Church where there is sure to be some intense head-banging going on over the plethora of
resolutions involving full inclusion of our gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender brothers and
sisters in the life of the church, as well as the issue of same-sex marriage. Ultimately, however,
it comes down to a larger doctrinal issue of who qualifies to be called a Christian and who does
not. And I would venture to say that all of us have our own unique answer to that question.
Perhaps most important in all our doctrinal matters is that we be willing to engage in them.
Many times our doctrinal opinions simply lead to a celebration of our diversity in spite of
differences. They are an entrée into deeper theological inquiry and, as such, an invitation to a
more rich and authentic individual faith. And it is that authentic faith that will be our true
spiritual foundation – whether others think so or not.
Straight Ahead!!
Pastor Dave

Help is definitely needed to sort and set-up the books during the first 2 weeks of August—
daytime and evening. Please let Stacy Pysher (610) 317-2671 or Lisa Schwartz (610) 588-8881
know when you can help. EVERYONE is welcome to help. You don’t have to be an avid reader
to be of assistance. (In fact, if you are not a reader you will probably be more efficient with setup than some of us who tend to “browse” as we are sorting. Bake sale items will be needed,
too.
BAZAAR:
The bazaar has some item for summer and the 4th of July on display. Stop by and check them
out. If you have jelly jars and would like to part with them, see Lois.

July 22nd from 5-7 pm. Please see Lois to sign up.
There will be two more weekdays in August and 1 Sunday in September. These dates to be
determined. Those will be the final opportunities as we will need to get the directory made by
the end of September.
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL:
This year spiritual mountaineers of all ages are invited to scale “Everest: Conquering
Challenges with God’s Mighty Power.” The dates are July 26 – 30, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., and our
base camp will be at Ackermanville UMC. And, we are also having an adult class.
Registration forms are available at the church. There is also a clothing swap that will be taking
place. We will arrange transportation for those who need a ride.

Life at the table
I have found that this life is short enough and
long enough to laugh at honest clowns and to
weep at requiem,
to break bread with a beggar and to accept a
gift from a king, to walk with a child at her pace
and to stretch to the step of the wise.
This life with all its graces is a table spread for
feasting.
A Host who asks our presence has meat and
bread and brimming cup we can never taste
until we take them into ourselves with costly
pledge.
Some look through the window and walk by,
while life is at the table.
