The famous poem, Mending Wall, by Robert Frost says
eloquently:
Something there is that doesn't love a wall,
That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it,
And spills the upper boulders in the sun;
And makes gaps even two can pass abreast.
The work of hunters is another thing:
I have come after them and made repair
Where they have left not one stone on a stone,
But they would have the rabbit out of hiding,
To please the yelping dogs. The gaps I mean,
No one has seen them made or heard them made,
But at spring mending-time we find them there.
I let my neighbor know beyond the hill;
And on a day we meet to walk the line
And set the wall between us once again.
We keep the wall between us as we go.
To each the boulders that have fallen to each.
And some are loaves and some so nearly balls
We have to use a spell to make them balance:
"Stay where you are until our backs are turned!"
We wear our fingers rough with handling them.
Oh, just another kind of out-door game,
One on a side. It comes to little more:
There where it is we do not need the wall:
He is all pine and I am apple orchard.
My apple trees will never get across
And eat the cones under his pines, I tell him.
He only says, "Good fences make good neighbors."
Spring is the mischief in me, and I wonder
If I could put a notion in his head:
"Why do they make good neighbors? Isn't it
Where there are cows? But here there are no cows.
Before I built a wall I'd ask to know
What I was walling in or walling out,
And to whom I was like to give offence.
Something there is that doesn't love a wall,
That wants it down." I could say "Elves" to him,
But it's not elves exactly, and I'd rather
He said it for himself. I see him there
Bringing a stone grasped firmly by the top
In each hand, like an old-stone savage armed.
He moves in darkness as it seems to me,
Not of woods only and the shade of trees.
He will not go behind his father's saying,
And he likes having thought of it so well
He says again, "Good fences make good neighbors."
It brings a smile to me whenever I hear or read it.
“Something there is that doesn’t love a wall.. .” The
poet muses, wondering if nature herself or some other
power has it to undo these man-made barriers, yet the
poet’s stodgy close-minded neighbor likes things this
way, and unoriginally restates his inherited wisdom
“Good Fences. . .” Would he only open his mind a bit. . .
Cragly doesn’t like walls very much. She’d have the
boulders out to catch the rabbit or squirrel for sure (and
I’d have to replace the rocks for fear of upsetting the
neighbors. . my own weakness).
It’s a good poem to reflect upon today’s Gospel –
the one of doubting Thomas. God doesn’t like the wall
of human sin and death –and so he “makes gaps even
two can pass abreast” – he and thee. Thomas doesn’t
believe it or much care for the Apostles’ pleading. “Until I can put my finger in the hole . .” he says, ever the
man used to the solid wall of death and an angry God.
Yet how good and opening is God’s mercy! It has
tumbled the barrier between us and him, it opens a way
for the walls between people to lower, and invites us to
run free in the meadows, pine and apple groves of
heaven.
Happy Divine Mercy Sunday,
In Christ,
St. Martha Church

A Special Thank You
Our deepest thanks to all our music ministries
- the Traditional Choir, the Harvest Folk Choir,
the Youth Choir, the instrumentalists, cantors,
keyboard players/organists and all who helped
us with our celebration of Easter. The time and
talent you contribute to our parish community is
cherished. Without all of you, we wouldn’t have
a music ministry. Without the people, the church
would simply be a building. All of you are part
of the equation that make up our faith community. May God reward you and you families
many times over for your undivided dedication
and love. May our Risen Lord continue to be the
guiding force in all you do. (Laudamus Deus
Omnium Vestrum) Praise God For All You Do!!!

Meetings: Most Sundays 5-7 pm downstairs
“Apart from the mercy of God there is no other
source of hope for mankind.” – Pope St. John
Paul II
Faith at Home: “When the great St. Louis de Monfort was teaching the secret of perfection by
means of a consecration to Jesus through Mary
he best explained what a consecration is. Consecration is giving oneself, fully and completely
to God, without conditions, without strings, without reservation. The Church has been practicing
this gesture of love for centuries. She has consecrated churches, nations and people to Jesus
and Mary in various ways. This surrender opens
new avenues for spiritual growth and healing.
“When we consecrate our families to The Divine
Mercy in these last times we do the same. We are
giving our families back to God, freely of our own
will. Human life is a gift from God. Family is a gift
from God. We in turn return our families (whether
wounded or united), in total surrender to the will
of Jesus’ Mercy, to be used daily for His purpose…The consecration marks a new beginning;
a fresh start in our life of love with Jesus, for each
of us is called to His love.” – From Family Divine
Mercy website
CCD Registration 2017-2018 has begun. Children
going into 2nd grade in September who did not
yet complete the 1st level CCD must register for
Level 1. Sacrament preparation is a two-year
process.
Vacation Bible School at St. Martha’s – Planning
is underway. Mark your calendars for June 26-30
& July 5-7. Registration forms may be found
online or at the doors of the church. Volunteers
needed.
Pope Francis’ April Prayer Intention: That young
people may respond generously to their vocations and seriously consider offering themselves
to God in the priesthood or consecrated life.
Spring Cleanup Service Opportunity: Catholic
Charities is expanding their yardwork assistance
program in our Point/Brick area. Middle and high
schoolers needing service hours or just wanting
to help the community are requested to help elderly or disabled residents with raking leaves,
picking up branches, and other yardwork.
Please contact me if interested.
Family Ministry: In November, we had the pleasure of being visited by Sister Peter Mary and Sister
Mary Esther of the vocations office of the Dominican Sisters of Saint Cecilia from Nashville. Many
of you got to see or meet them as they spoke at
some of our Masses and spoke to all our CCD
classes that week. They have just debuted a new
TV series on EWTN titled, “Praying as a Family”
where they talk to many families about how they
are living their Catholic faith as a family. New episodes debut on Mondays at 5:00PM and repeat
on Saturdays at 6:00PM. EWTN is on Comcast
channels 291 and 1318, Direct TV channel 370,
and Dish channel 261.
Teen RCIA: Though it’s only 1 week after Easter,
it’s not too early to be thinking about receiving
sacraments at next year’s Easter vigil. Any teens
who have not received Baptism, First Eucharist,
and/or Confirmation and would like to, please
let me know as preparation will begin this summer. Preparation is from 1-2 years.
