Celebration of the Arts
Rescheduled for Tuesday, April 5, 2016, 12:003:00pm
Students will enjoy live performances from
students, engage in hands-on art activities, and
take part in a brown bag picnic lunch. It is like a
field trip day for the arts!
5th graders are asked to bring a bag lunch and
wear red to this “Arts Festival.” There will be a
Shaved Ice Truck at the festival if the children
would like to purchase a refreshing treat.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks for supporting the arts.
Change for a Children's Chance
The Lower School Student Council is
sponsoring a coin drive benefiting the
Children's Home Society. Lower School
students are encouraged to bring in any loose
change to help us fill our change bottle. The
collection bottle will be in the Commons from
March 24-April 8. Thank you in advance for
helping us support children in our area!
This week we continued reading My Brother
Sam is Dead. Our reading comprehension skill was
visualizing. Students used the novel and the picture book
Katie’s Trunk by Ann Turner, which is also set during the
Revolutionary War, to “Read it, Draw it and Interpret
It.” In addition, students were given information about the
project for the novel. Students are asked to create a fun,
creative and educational trivia game that will demonstrate
their understanding of the novel. Their peers will play
their game as a way to prepare for the end-of-novel
test. The TENTATIVE due date for this project is
Thursday, April 21st, but I strongly encouraged students to
begin working on their projects as they continue reading
the book. Details and the rubric can be found in your
child’s Homework Folder or on my class website. Next
week we will explore POINT OF VIEW and
PERSPECTIVE. Students will be asked to detail how
different characters in the book viewed the same object
or situation.
Reading:
Math: In Unit 6, students will develop strategies for
multiplying and dividing decimals, use
measurement data to create line plots, and revisit
volume concepts
Language Arts: Students completed the Unit 3
assessment this week. They will begin Unit 4,
lesson 29:Adjectives, next week. In Writing
students will begin a Poetry Unit learning and
writing about various styles of poetry
Social Studies: Students read the biographies of
important figures of the American Revolution. They
compared the uniforms of the Patriots, French, and the
British soldiers. Students were able to sign the
Declaration of Independence and print a copy showing
their signature with the other 57 signers. They read
about the Battle of Yorktown and the General
Cornwallis's surrender and the Treaty of Paris, officially
ending the American Revolution. They will complete a
vocabulary quiz and begin their American Revolution
Time Line booklets. The booklets are their final grades
for the unit and are due Wednesday, April
6th. Students have class time to work on the booklets
but will need time outside of class to complete this
project.
Science: This week, students learned the parts of
plant and animal cells, studied single-celled
amoebas, paramecium and euglena, and learned
why and how they move about. We performed a
Yeast Lab during which we fed white sugar to active
yeast and came back to observe the production of
carbon dioxide gas. We continued work on our
Field Journals and are preparing for a Cells Quiz on
Monday. Students have a review sheet, Quizlet and
material in their binders to study.
