✂ BUILDtrend OPEN UP TO STORAGE Why built-in wardrobes continue to be a space-efficient choice for new home designs WORDS Jessica Magliulo PHOTOGRAPHY Nick Clayton etween dresses and shoes and pants and shirts, not to mention handbags and scarves and ties . . . it’s any wonder we can never have a bigenough wardrobe. When space doesn’t permit a walk-in, a built-in wardrobe provides organised storage with no clutter. ‘‘Slide the door across and all your belongings are stored conveniently out-ofsight,’’ says interior designer Deb Piro of Fairmont Homes. ‘‘A wardrobe niche, which is set back on the floorplan, can be built into the wall space to give more floor space to a room. Because it goes straight to the ceiling, it also creates an illusion of height.’’ Built-in wardrobes are popular in minor bedrooms, but are also included in the main bedroom of new home designs. ‘‘Built-ins tend to be more organised as they have more shelving and designated storage areas, whereas a walk-in visually can look cluttered because they’re PUB: HOME B 9/9/12 H-10 HIDDEN AWAY White sliding wardrobe doors create a more spacious feel to this room commonly used to store other items, such as suitcases,’’ she says. ‘‘People need to be very organised and perhaps look into getting their own shelving installed.’’ The Wellington by Fairmont Homes includes a built-in wardrobe with sliding doors in the main bedroom. White doors were chosen to blend with the wall colour. Other options for door finishes include mirrors, which can make the room appear larger, easy-care vinyl and more contemporary-look effects of wallpaper and translucent glass. When it comes to storage, consider the space you want allocated to hanging, shelving and drawers. Shoe racks are a space-efficient addition, as are slide-out trouser and tie racks. ‘‘These inclusions are well worth stretching the budget for,’’ Deb says.
