GRAND KNIGHT’S
MESSAGE
My Brothers and Sisters:
January was an important month
for the Right to Life movement
with two very special events:
First, was the Annual Pro Life
Mass held in St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Sunday, January 22nd.
The following day, Monday, the
23rd, was the Right To Life
March in Washington, D.C. Both
of these events were quite impressive and well attended. I’d
like to give a special thank you to
those Brother Knights who were
able to attend and show their
strong support for the unborn.
As indicated in the January issue
of Columbia magazine, a new
book has just been released
about our founder: Father Michael J. McGivney. Written by
co-authors Douglas Brinkley and
Julie M. Fenster, the book shows
the 31 year old priest as a man of
practical action with a sense of
compassion in his personal concern for his immigrant flock.
Take a look at the January Columbia. It has a excerpt from the
book which, I believe, you will
find interesting and informative.
If you are interested in purchasing a copy, you can go online at
www.koc.org to do so at a discounted price. Knights of Columbus Charities will receive a
percentage from each sale made
on the website.
On January 17th, Father Charles
Mangano, Pastor of Cure of Ars
Church, joined the Knights of
Columbus. Father participated in
the First and Second degrees at
Barry Council in Hicksville. On
behalf of my Brother Knights Father, welcome to our Reilly
Council family. We are pleased
that our Council now includes
three local priests: Our Chaplain
and Pastor of Sacred Heart, Father Tom Gallagher; and now,
Father Charles and Father Francis, both of Cure of Ars.
On Sunday, February 12th, the
Long Island Conference will meet
at Memorare Council in Seaford
in order to again nominate
Brother Anthony Preziosi as our
candidate for New York State
Deputy for the 2006-2007 Columbian Year.

endar and plan to join us.
Finally, let us remember: “Gifts
to Jesus” If you would give a gift
to Jesus, give it to the poor on
earth; If you would serve His
love and missions, serve by deeds
of Christian worth; If you would
give Him gifts of comfort, comfort others with His grace; If you
would dry His tears of sorrow,
dry them on another’s face.
Every act of love and kindness
you bestow on one in need is a
precious gift to Jesus and a service, in His creed. Give of heart
and hand and spirit. Every gift
you can afford in giving unto others you are giving to the Lord.
Michael Dubina
May God look after you and
Bless your family.

A MESSAGE FROM
OUR CHAPLAIN
My dear Brother Knights:
We are about to embark once
again on the Lenten pilgrimage
with Ash Wednesday this March
1st. We will have the opportunity to renew our acquaintance
with the desert as we embark on
the journey of the Old Testament people from slavery to
freedom through the desert.
The biblical imagery of the desert
is to remind us of purification
and passage. It is also to remind
us how the Old Testament people spent forty years traveling the
Sinai peninsula—a rather small
geographical area. As a consequence, they must have been going in circles waiting for the Lord
to bring them to their new land.
In many respects, we as a church
have been in the desert in recent
years. The Lord is working on
us as we seem to be going in circles in the desert of purification.
But let us never lose sight of the
fact that when Saint Paul wanted
to respond to his challengers
who asked how he could make
the statement he was making
when he have never been with
Jesus and was never on of the
original Apostles, Saint Paul listed
his qualifications: beatings, imprisonment, scourging. ship wreck,
and the list went on.
We are never closer to Christ
than when we identify with Him
in his weakness, suffering and
brokenness. May this Lenten
season and our observance of it
help us to see Christ in the brokenness of the Church and to
pray for the coming of that
Church into its new land and
form as a result of these years in
the desert.

TWO MEXICAN
KNIGHTS BEATIFIED
Father Andres Molist and FatherJose Montano were beatified in
ceremonies in Gaudalajara, Mexico on November 20th. Both
were executed for their faith in
1927 during Mexico’s revolutionary period, during which the government persecuted the Catholic
Church. Supreme Knight Carl A.
Anderson was present at the
Mass celebrated by Cardinal Jose
Martins. Following the Angeles
at the Vatican on November
20th, Pope Benedict XVI recalled
the new blesseds, saying :”They
faced martyrdom in order to defend their Christian faith….They
are, for us, a permanent example
and a stimulus to hear coherent
witness to our own faith in modern society. ”If Father Molist and
Montano are canonized they will
join six other Brother Knights
who were also martyred in Mexico in the 1920s, and who were
declared saints by Pope John Paul
in 2000.

FIRST COUNCILS IN
NOTES
Instead of our usual January
meeting, we went out for dinner
at Piccolo’s on Sunrise Highway
in beautiful downtown Bellmore.
We had a great time and everyone heartily agreed it’s good for
a winter repeat, Those of us
who were able to attend were
quite satisfied.
POLAND TO BE
Our next meeting, of course, will
be on February 14th, Valentine’s
Day. At that time, I hope to be
back and we are hoping to get all
the stuff for Christa House together. If you didn’t get the list
of donation items, please get in
touch with Barbara Massaro
(826-6577) or Millie BalisArtura
(489-2566) and they will have a
copy you can pick up. Once we
get all the items together I will
bring it out to Father Rodgers.
Please continue to pray for an
end to war and killing, especially
for those in our military. And
speak kindly to anyone you know
who is grieving for one reason or
another. Our condolences to
Steve and Janet McGuire on the
loss of Steve’s Dad. We’re hoping that, bt now, Fran Abdale is in
Rehab. Good luck, Fran.
I wish us all a healthy year in
2006 and peace in our hearts,
homes, and our world.
God Bless.
Love,
Mary
CHARTERED IN 2006
This past August, the supreme
Board of Directors, approved
plans to expand the Knights into
Poland, at the request of the
Catholic bishops there. The first
Polish councils will be chartered
in the spring of 2006. A delegation from the supreme Council
Office in New Haven traveled to
Poland in early December to
continue organizational work
there
“Poland is the ideal place for the
Knights of Columbus to establish
councils in Europe,” Supreme
Knight Carl A. Anderson said.
“It is a country where the Catholic faith is both vibrant and central to the nation’s history. Poland is also the birthplace of
Pope John Paul II, one of the
greatest Popes in the Church’s
history. The Knight’s tradition of
faith, charity and support for the
Church will resonate strongly in
Poland.”
The Order’s website has recently
been enhanced with Polish lang u a g e
c o n t e n t
(www.kofc.org/polski).
In addition, the Order’s website
receives nearly 1.5 million visits
annually in English, Spanish and
French.

ARE YOU FEELING
THOUGHTFUL?
Here are a few things to think
about that you have probably
never thought about:
•
Can you cry under water?
•
Why does a round pizza
come in a square box?
•
What disease did cured ham
actually have?
•
Once in heaven, do you get
stuck wearing the clothes you
were buried in for eternity?
•
If a deaf person goes to
court, is it still called a hearing?
•
Why do you have to “put
your two cents in” but its
only “a penny for your
thoughts”? Where’s that extra penny go to?
•
Can a hearse carrying a
corpse drive in the carpool
lane?
•
If corn oil is made from corn,
and vegetable oil from vegetables, what is baby oil made
from?
•
If the professor on Gilligan’s
Island can make a radio out
of a coconut, why can’t he fix
a hole in the boat?
