Relentless Need Over the past year, while economists and financial analysts debated the state of the economy, with many refusing to say ‘recession,’ the FreestoreFoodbank has been fully aware of reality as more and more people have come to our door seeking help. Many are newcomers who have recently lost jobs. Many have come with stories of impending eviction or foreclosure. (Realize that, when landlords lose their property to foreclosure, their tenants are displaced.) And many are parents attempting to keep their children fed, clothed, and in school. In fact, records of the Emergency Client Services Center for the first four months of FY2009 show a 21% increase in requests for service from households of 3-to-4 persons compared to the same period a year ago. In a recent interview with a news reporter our CEO, John Young, described the FreestoreFoodbank as a “bellwether for how the economy is faring.” For the past two years, our Liberty Street facility has seen a more than 60% increase in the number of requests for help. So, current headlines about record-breaking job loss rates, housing crises, and food shortages merely confirm what we’ve been witnessing for some time. “We’re trying to keep up,” John says, “and even though the gifts we receive from generous donors continue to grow each year, it’s a real challenge for us to keep up with the extraordinary increase in need.” Our Summer 2007 CONNECTION newsletter featured a cover article about the growing number of persons visiting the Emergency Client Services Center. That article stated that an average of 227 persons were seen per day. It said that all the chairs in the waiting area were typically filled. Now, the average number of visitors exceeds 300 per day, the chairs are still filled, and people are standing in line outside the waiting area. This has historically been the case only during holiday food distribution, but now it Annual Report 2008 occurs daily. Even against these odds, our dedicated staff works tirelessly to ensure that every person who comes to our door gets the attention he or she needs. In the coming year, we are confident that the renovation of our Liberty Street facility will allow our staff to work even more efficiently than they already do, while also providing a more welcoming atmosphere for clients who must wait for assistance. The fact that so many more of our clients represent families with children is of particular concern, as children are truly the most vulnerable of all. This is why programs to address childhood hunger are at the top of the Freestore Foodbank’s agenda. Working in partnership with the Newport, Covington, and Cincinnati school systems, and operating on generous funding from Impact 100, the Andrew Jergens Foundation, the P&G Fund and others, we have implemented a major expansion of Continued on page 3. ISSUE WINTER 2008-2009 MISSION Message from the President What a community we live in! During the past year the FreestoreFoodbank and our partnering nonprofit member agencies have been challenged to serve record-breaking numbers of individuals and families in need. It appeared at times that we might reach the breaking point with food in short supply and all our resources stretched to the max. But, because we live in such a caring community, we’ve been able to meet the challenge. The amazing generosity of our supporters is a trust we hold in the highest regard, because we consider every gift to be an investment in a better community. We do not view this organization as “ours,” but rather as a valuable asset that belongs to the community. So, as emissaries of your generosity, the board and staff of the FreestoreFoodbank are ever- conscious of our responsibility to meet your expectations. Your input is always welcome and we hope you’ll let us know how we can make improvements. Through the past year of financial turmoil and uncertainty on many fronts, we’ve been inspired by the outpouring of kindness on the part of our donors. Corporate sponsors and private foundations have stepped forward as never before to ensure our success. Individuals and community groups have helped tackle the food shortage with a proliferation of food drives. And during the holiday season, we were gratified to know that many people directed their giving toward our neighbors in need as an alternative to holiday parties or gift exchanges. As a result of all these efforts, I’m pleased to report that we exceeded our ambitious $1.5 million goal for the 2008 Hunger is Unacceptable campaign. In all my years of working in social services, I have never been so gratified and humbled to be part of such an outpouring of concern for those less fortunate. On behalf of everyone at the Freestore Foodbank and for all those we serve, I extend a heartfelt thanks to everyone who helps make our work possible and, as a result, makes our community a better place for all. May the New Year be kind to all of you. Best, John J. Young President and CEO We provide food and services, create stability and further self-reliance for people in crisis. Board of Trustees Kurt L. The Rosenthal Fresh Foods Initiative received support for a major expansion through gifts from The P&G Fund ($55,000) and The Lincy Foundation ($41,200) which, together, covered the cost of a new 14’ refrigerated truck and a fulltime driver. Our other child feeding program, Kids Cafe, continues to grow as well and now serves more than 3,000 meals weekly to hungry children in and around Cincinnati. One of the greatest challenges in keeping pace with the historically high need is the acquisition of food. Helping with this is the significant expansion of our food rescue program involving regional food stores. Following the leadership example of The Kroger Co., other food retailers are now participating in this program. They include bigg’s, Fresh Market, Sam’s Club, Trader Joe’s, Wal-Mart, and Whole Foods. Other programs that help struggling families access benefits are an essential part of the effort to create stability and further self-reliance. Many families who are eligible for benefits such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly the Food Stamp program), Medicaid, and various Social Security entitlements are either unaware of their eligibility or find the complex application process too daunting. FreestoreFoodbank workers are able to navigate the system on behalf of eligible families and greatly improve the enrollment success rate. For nearly four decades, the FreestoreFoodbank has served on the front lines in the so-called “war on poverty” and at no time has the battle been more intense. In these particularly hard times, we are using all the internal resources we can muster. We are fortunate that members of our community understand that widespread poverty is everyone’s problem. And we’re grateful for so many loyal and unwavering supporters who have stepped up once again to help us address the relentless need. 3 More Empty Bowls = F ewer Empty Tummies F reest o re F o o d b a n k Annu a l R e p o rt 2008 Because Hunger in Our Community is Unacceptable Generous Donors This equation seems not to add up, unless one understands the significance of Empty Bowls. Each year, the Clay Alliance organizes the Empty Bowls event to benefit the FreestoreFoodbank’s Kids Cafe program. At the event, guests line up to purchase bowls and other creations donated by local clay artisans, after which they stand in a “soup line.” The symbolism serves as a reminder of the reason they are there . . . to help feed hungry children. This year, more than 800 guests converged at the Baker Hunt Foundation in Covington on a lovely November afternoon and their contributions yielded $20,000 for the Kids Cafe program. In addition to purchasing art, guests enjoyed musical entertainment and savored a variety of soups and other culinary treats provided by generous donors. 4 Ashba’s, Sandra & Jeff Baker Hunt Foundation Bob Littmann (music) Chez Nora Cincinnati COOKS! WINTER 2008-2009 When Determination Is All There Is Message from the Board Chair During my tenure as Board Chair for the FreestoreFoodbank I have been honored to work with the dedicated team of professionals who serve clients both directly and indirectly, as well as a genuinely concerned group of volunteer board leaders, all of whom go above and beyond to assist our neighbors and friends in need. Our community has entrusted us with the stewardship of significant resources and gifts in the fulfillment of our mission. In addition to the 15,000+ individual donors who support the FreestoreFoodbank financially, we are blessed to have a loyal base of corporate partners and private philanthropic organizations who help us bridge the gap between hunger and self-reliance for those most vulnerable among us. The success to date of our Renewing Hope Capital Campaign is evidence that the community recognizes the value of our work and is committed to ensuring our viability far into the future. Other proof of community involvement includes the more than 60,000 hours of volunteer labor that have been devoted to assisting us in countless ways. We also appreciate that it would be impossible for us to serve a low-income population of tens of thousands across 20 counties without the partnership of hundreds of nonprofit member agencies who work tirelessly in their own neighborhoods. It is gratifying to know that so many of our friends agree with us that “Hunger Is Unacceptable” and I would like to report that we are winning the fight against hunger. The reality is that, as tough times persist in the region, we are seeing many new faces at our door and we must all work harder and smarter to keep the pace. But, even in these difficult times, two things give me hope: One is the ongoing commitment of our entire community to step up to the challenge, and second is the character and courage of people in crisis who seek our help as they struggle to achieve or regain stability and strive for self-reliance. Again, it’s an honor and privilege to serve alongside so many caring individuals and groups. Sincerely, Kurt L. Gibson Carey Shayne Graham 2 Michael Kremzar Cheryl Love William Mallory, Sr. David Mann 2008 Kareema Green learned determination as a young child. At age 5, she witnessed her mother’s remarkable recovery from near-fatal injuries sustained in the line of duty as a police officer. Now, at age 36, Kareema is applying her own strong will to a battle with life-threatening illness that caused her to lose her job and nearly left her homeless. While undergoing rehabilitation in a nursing home after surgery for a paralyzing spine disease, Kareema fell behind two months in her rent and received an eviction notice. Confined to the nursing home, with no income, no transportation and barely able to walk, Kareema felt helpless for the first time in her life. There was no way she could prevent her belongings from being set out on the street. Then, a worker at the nursing home who had been homeless once herself suggested Kareema contact the FreestoreFoodbank. “When I received the eviction notice, I was horrified,” says Kareema. “But, when I called the Freestore, I was connected to an angel.” It was Housing Supervisor Sarah Humphries. “I was so upset that Ms. Humphries could barely understand me, but she calmed me down and began to work her magic.” From the perspective of Sarah Humphries, it was anything but “magic.” She notes, “I only wish we could wave a wand and find homes for all our clients. In reality, there’s often little we can do because there simply aren’t enough funds to provide rent assistance to everyone threatened with eviction or those who’ve already been displaced. In Kareema’s case, if we could have paid her rent arrearage to buy her time until her Social Security Disability Insurance kicked in, it would have been easy. Adequate funding for rent assistance could prevent many problems for many ANNUAL REPORT people, especially families with children, whose housing options are more limited. Also, once an individual or family has an eviction on their record, it’s that much more difficult for them to find another home. That’s one reason my staff and I strive so hard to prevent eviction.” In the case of Kareema Green, there were no previous evictions or other blemishes on her record. There was, instead, a 14-year history of respectable employment as a nursing aid and security guard. And there was an enormous dose of determination that inspired the housing staff to help her find a solution, despite the Kareema Green (left) expresses her gratitude to Housing Supervisor Sarah Humphries. lack of funding. “Without Kareema’s willingness to do all she could to help herself, including selling most of her few possessions” says Sarah, “I doubt we would have succeeded. We gave her a list of places to call and she called them all. I asked her to provide necessary documents and other information, and she came through. She called me back nearly every day to let me know her status and, even when she could barely walk, she went with me to collect all the official papers we needed. Then we went to look at a small apartment available through the Homeless Individuals Partnership Program.” The new apartment, although only two rooms with a tiny kitchenette, seems spacious compared to the oneroom studio Kareema was forced to leave. It also has a pleasant view of a grassy area where Kareema has seen deer scampering through the snow. No doubt this view will help lift her spirits as she recuperates from another extensive back surgery that requires several months of rehabilitation, keeping her house-bound until summer. But, what will ultimately sustain her is her extraordinary determination and optimism for the future. Seated on one of only two chairs in the room, with no other furniture, and her walker nearby, she contemplates the upcoming 12-hour operation on her spine. “I don’t think about what I don’t have,” she says, “And I’m not mad about being put out. The landlord has to do his business. I’m just grateful to find people who have a heart.” She wipes tears of gratitude from her eyes as she talks about the help she got from the Freestore, including food, and remembers the kindness of neighbors who helped her move her few things. A family of foster children from across the street helped carry boxes up the stairs to the new apartment. “I’m used to doing for myself and helping other people,” she says. “To have a little seven-year-old tell me to ‘just sit there and let us do this’ was just too much.” Then, with sparkling eyes and an uncontrollable grin lighting her face, she looks at her new “best friend,” Sarah Humphries, and adds, “When I get better, I’m going to be one of the Freestore’s best volunteers.” 3 Financials Key Facts 2008 July 1, 2007 - June 30, 2008 FreestoreFoodbank, Inc. and Corwine Foundation, Inc. The roof has been replaced on the Mayerson Food Distribution Center in Bond Hill and ground has been broken for the new Jeffrey and Darlene Anderson Center on Central Parkway. Renovations on the Liberty Street Emergency Client Services Center are scheduled to begin in February. No interruption to client services is anticipated during the renovation. To date the campaign has raised $11.4 million. Among the most recent major gifts is a $150,000 challenge grant from Fidelity which matches gifts of $15,000 or more. Other major gifts received since the last update include Farmer Family Foundation ($150,000), John J. and Mary R. Schiff Foundation ($100,000), Greater Cincinnati Foundation ($94,000), and PNC Bank $40,000). We are grateful to all who have invested in our community through the Renewing Hope Capital Campaign. Renovations at the Emergency Client Services Center will address issues of privacy, safety, traffic flow and efficient delivery of services. 12 2008 ANNUAL REPORT The Joy of Saving and Sharing Learning About Philanthropy Cindy Wolford of Colerain Township is a stay-at-home mom who saves enough on her groceries every month to pay her utility bill AND make a significant donation to the FreestoreFoodbank. How does she do it? With coupons. Cindy’s passion for clipping coupons might not be shared by everyone, but the opportunity is available to everyone. “For people who need to cut their expenses, this is something anyone can do,” she says. “One secret to success is to take advantage of coupon doubling at Kroger and Meijer stores. I also wait Cindy Wolford, shown with her 18-month-old for items to go on sale so I get the added daughter, Claire, brings a monthly food and product donation to the FreestoreFoodbank. savings of the sale price on top of the coupon savings. This often results in items being free!” she smiles. “I used to spend $150 a week on groceries and now spend about $80 for our family of four.” Those interested in learning about Cindy’s approach to couponing are encouraged to visit her website at allingoodfaith.blogspot.com. Adding to Cindy’s motivation to save is her sense of duty to donate a significant number of items every month to the FreestoreFoodbank. In November, she gave our food bank $255 worth of products that she bought for only $18. That’s less than we would have paid for the same items through All these products, valued at $255, were bought for only $18 our network purchasing using coupons. channels. And much of what Cindy brought us were non-food personal care products that are especially appreciated since they’re essential but can’t be purchased using Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly Food Stamp) benefits. There is a large online community of coupon enthusiasts who share information on free coupon resources and special deals as well as tips on how to get the most for your money, or in this case, coupons. There also are groups who meet to trade coupons and learn how to save on everything from tissue to spaghetti sauce. “It doesn’t take much time to think about what you’ll need for the next few months and stock up when great deals come along. I haven’t paid for bathroom tissue in six months!” Cindy confides proudly. “Aside from our own savings, it’s also uplifting to be able to use this as a means of helping people in need. As a mother of young children, my volunteer time is limited, but I can do this right at home while the baby is napping. I also like to involve my 5-year-old as a way of teaching her Christian values of helping others.” Cindy also organized a food drive at her church. We hope her joyful spirit is contagious! The value of charitable giving is instilled in many of us at a very early age by the single greatest influences in our lives – our parents. Recently, as I looked through some old family photos, I remembered hearing my mother tell my sisters and me that there are people who are not as fortunate and that it is up to each of us to share money and food with those in need. “That is a mitzvah,” she’d say. It ‘s been 12 years since my mother passed away, but sometimes when I look at photos I can remember conversations with her that provided me with memorable life lessons. The value system that each of us receives from our parents is what makes us who we are. Although many of us are philanthropic, our children might not recognize the good things we do to help others, unless we show them or tell them in ways they can remember. It may not impact them initially but, as the years go by, they will reflect on the ways we’ve taught Kathy Greenberg, them about Major and Planned Gifts Officer philanthropy. For example, children may not see a parent writing a check, but they’ll remember the feeling they have when they volunteer alongside their parents. Making active connections in this way helps children become socially aware and realize the importance of becoming involved in helping others. Through such opportunities, combined with our guidance, our children develop their own approach to charitable giving and form their own personal links to the community through philanthropic deeds. Often starting in small ways, the family legacy of giving gets passed down through generations, having a continuous impact on the entire community over time. If you’d like to know more about how your family can get involved with the FreestoreFoodbank, I welcome your call at 513-482-7544. WINTER 2008-2009 5 2008: 2008 Honda Fit Grand Prize Winner Robert Dilgard, Cincinnati (Robert generously donated the 2008 Honda Fit back to the FreestoreFoodbank) $1,000 U.S. Savings Bond Winners courtesy of National City Jean Bohme, Cincinnati Kate Moriarty, Cincinnati G.C. Dorsch, Cincinnati Rita Klein, Cincinnati Pat Gering, Cincinnati 6 Behind the Scenes at the Rubber Duck Regatta For fourteen years, the Cincinnati community has been amused and, hopefully, inspired every Labor Day weekend by watching thousands of bright yellow rubber ducks bob down the Ohio River in a race to feed the hungry. The race itself takes about 20 minutes, but it might surprise you to know that it takes a full eight months of planning and hundreds of peoplehours to pull this thing off every year. It all starts in January with monthly steering committee meetings where volunteers from sponsoring companies, media reps, and FreestoreFoodbank staff tackle the myriad details of organizing the world’s largest Rubber Duck Regatta and the Freestore Foodbank’s largest annual fundraising event, raising more than $440,000 this year. First we line up sponsors, without whom the event can’t succeed. Then there’s the matter of prizes. This year’s grand prize was a 2008 Honda Fit compliments of Greater Cincinnati Honda Dealers Association. National City buys a $1-million insurance policy in the event that the first duck over the finish line bears the lucky $1-million number. Also donated by National City are five $1,000 savings bonds. With sponsors and prizes lined up, it’s on to logistics and promotion. There are permits to get, brochures to print, mailings to prepare, fliers and posters and billboards to design, TV and radio announcements to produce, and one big party to plan. The festive Celebriduck Auction is the official opening of “Duck Season” in Cincinnati, after which the sales begin in earnest. The Rubber Duck Regatta is really a series of events and activities, all designed to build awareness of the FreestoreFoodbank’s work and promote the “sale” of rubber ducks to participate in the race. The Corporate Quacky Race features duck-suited teams from supporting companies running a wacky obstacle course to draw attention to the Rubber Duck Regatta. Throughout July and August, weekend duck-selling events are held in Kroger parking lots and at Honda Dealerships. A mass mailing is sent to the FreestoreFoodbank’s entire donor base and promotional inserts are included in Cincinnati Bell phone bills. Billboards are posted, posters are mounted, PSA’s are aired by Local 12, Time Warner, and various radio stations, and brochures are distributed through National City, Skyline Chili, Frisch’s, and LaRosa’s. Even some Pepsi cans bear a promotional message. And, by the way, have you seen the giant inflatable duck on a rooftop just south of the Norwood Lateral on I-71? How about the little Honda Fit covered in duck décor zipping around town? Ducks are everywhere! Not to mention the 90,000 ducks that arrive in our food bank warehouse just before the race. It takes volunteers about a week to take off the numbers from their previous races and tag them with new numbers for our race. You see, these are professional racing ducks that travel from race to race, so they come to us from various places. And what that means is, even when the race is over, it’s still not over. All those soaking wet ducks have to be pulled from the river, given baths, counted and packed up to travel to their next events in various places around the world. So, come next August when you respond to our direct mail letter, make your call to the 929-DUCK hotline, or visit www.rubberduckregatta.org to buy your ducks for the 2009 Rubber Duck Regatta, you’ll know just how grateful we are to hear from you. After all those months of work by all those dozens of people, we’d be devastated if we didn’t! WINTER The Purple People Bridge is a great place for excutive meetings. Next time you see a very large duck you’ll know it’s ours! It takes dozens of volunteers to scoop ducks out of the river after the race. A forklift operator, tilt hoppers for transporting ducks as well as pressure washing machines are generously donated by Art’s Rental Equipment, CROWN Lift Trucks, and Quality Towing & Equipment Moving. The 49,614 persons who received holiday food represented an increase of more than 20% over last year. Helping to make it all possible was an extraordinary outpouring of generosity from the Cincinnati community. We are especially grateful for the annual holiday donation from The Kroger Co. and their vendors, which amounted to more than $116,000 worth of food this year. Numerous Holiday Events Benefited the FreestoreFoodbank The annual Check-Out Hunger campaign at area Kroger stores brought in an impressive total of $120,000 from generous Kroger customers. The year-long Bag Hunger campaign at bigg’s supermarkets netted 13,000 pounds of food for the food bank. Whole Foods’ Grab n Give promotion during the month of December collected 4,000 pounds of food. Working in partnership with Feeding America, Wal-Mart donated $300,000 to the Ohio Association of Second Harvest Food Banks. The FreestoreFoodbank’s share was $50,000. Presenting a check to CEO John Young are Mike Ellison (center) and Allen Ottis (right), marketing managers for Cincinnati Wal-Mart stores. As usual, dozens of tireless volunteers helped distribute holiday food to needy families. Among them were players from the UC Bearcats Football team. They not only volunteered, but also took up a collection of $300, presented here to the FreestoreFoodbank’s Vice President of Client Services, Bernice Cooper. Go Bearcats! Cincinnati Bengals Food Drive raised $8,020 and collected 7,630 pounds of food. 8 LaRosa’s Candy Canes for a Cause raised more than $20,000. In conjunction with their check presentation, employees of local Wal-Mart stores volunteered to pack holiday food boxes at the Mayerson Food Distribution Center in Bond Hill. Thank you, all! Many thanks to all local businesses, organizations and individuals who devoted time and effort to help make the holidays brighter for our neighbors in need. WINTER 2008-2009
