Nursing Students Volunteer at the 19th Annual Cordova Mall Some JDCC Nursing students having a ball volunteering at the Mall! Jefferson Davis Community College was instrumental in assisting in fundraising for the children at Sacred Heart Hospital Saturday, January 25. A group of Registered Nursing students, under the direction of instructor Lynette Ruckman, were among the volunteers manning the various responsibilities at the Krewe of Les Petits Enfants sponsored Mall Ball. The Krewe of Les Petits Enfants (meaning “Order of the Small Children) is a participant of the Gulf Coast’s celebration of Mardi Gras. The Mall Ball, which is in its 19th year, is one of Sacred Heart’s most lucrative contributing events. In recent years, funds raised from this event were responsible for donations such as equipment to the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care), and security sensors for the infants – and that is just the tip of the iceberg. Last year the krewe raised $376,000 for the event and donated all of the proceeds to the hospital. Pensacola’s (cont.on page 2) THE WARHAWK WORD PAGE 1 Attention Jefferson Davis Students! For the next two months a representative for Bama Covered and Phi Theta Kappa will be offering students valuable information on insurance rights available to students in Alabama. There will be informative packets available to help you understand your health care options. We are a non-partisan, non-profit movement led by students in our state to help people in our community make informed decisions about health care options. We are not selling insurance. With so many changes in the healthcare landscape, it is difficult to understand health insurance. We want to help you with any questions or concerns you may have about coverage rights and information. JDCC College Transfer Fair The JDCC College Transfer Fair will be held on February 24, from 10 - 12, in the gym. Come and have some fun with activities and door prizes and find out some good transfer information! (cont. from page 1)Cordova Mall was closed to shoppers at 6 p.m., and the decorations and booths were quickly erected by the volunteers. Guests, decked out in beautiful gowns and tuxedos, flooded the mall at 8 p.m., and the festivities began with great food, dancing, and numerous bands interspersed throughout the mall. $50-$60 admission tickets for the event are the primary fundraisers for the children, and the turn-out was great this year, according to an official for the event. Some of the JDCC volunteers were manning the Silent Auction Booth, and some were instructed by event planners to be at the coat check booth, as well as numerous food service areas. The students could be found offering their help throughout the mall event and literally “running” all night. They arrived at the mall at 5 p.m. and were “utilized” until after midnight. A spokesperson for the Silent Auction relayed that just this small event, within the actual Mall Ball activities, raised over $16,000 for the children. “Without our volunteers, we couldn’t put on the Mall Ball. We appreciate all of your support and we appreciate Jefferson Davis Community College,” said Volunteer Coordinator Vickie Dollhausen from Sacred Heart Health System. Everett Watson Speaks to Nursing Students By Susan Mack Mr. Everett Watson presented Exploring Alternative Treatments for Epilepsy to approximately 85 nursing students at Jefferson Davis Community College on Thursday, January 16, 2014. The presentation was well structured and flowed from symptoms to diagnostic testing through client diagnosis with treatment options based on the area of the brain affected. The program was well received by students who appreciated the knowledge but even more so valued the personalization of the information and how to provide Mr. Everett Watson with Miranda Burkhead, senior nursing student. empathetic care to a client with epilepsy and their family. Photo by Abbie Rolph JDCC Nursing Students Help Manna Food Bank for Thanksgiving By Maunica Williams Back in the summer of 2013, the nursing student representatives proposed an idea to Mrs. Susan Mack, Director of Nursing, about making a donation to help Manna Food Bank during the 2013 Thanksgiving Holiday as a community service. Once the idea was approved, the Jefferson Davis nursing students at the Atmore and Brewton campuses got busy collecting the non-perishable items. From August to November, the nursing students helped gather items such as canned vegetables, soups, and baby food. In a group effort between both campuses, the nursing department gathered over 2100 items. The nursing students that made the donations were very excited to help with the nutrition for the families in need. These items were delivered to a local Manna Food Bank Pantry at Jay First Baptist Church in Jay, FL, by Maunica Williams, Kami Ates, Ryan Jones, and Mark McGee on November 20th. When the delivery was made, the interim pastor/youth minister, Bro. Cameron Andrews, told us that a donation like that was a true blessing, and he had never seen that pantry that full. In talking with Bro. Andrews, we learned the donations that were made by JDCC would be kept locally to help the families in our communities. The Manna Food Bank was extremely grateful and excited about the large contribution that we made. Bro. Cameron Andrews (Jay First Baptist), said “Your contribution is greatly appreciated. Thank You so very much. This The food donations piled up as the food drive procontribution of 2013 pieces will go toward our local distribution and help feed several gressed. By Tyler Henry After cleaning the remaining snow, ice, and water off the field from the mid-week snowstorm the last week of January, it was finally time to kick off the Warhawks’ spring 2014 campaign. The Hawks opened up against Marion Military Institute at home on Saturday, February 1, and got their first win of the season 7-3 over the Tigers. The Hawks then traveled to Phenix City, AL, to take on the Chattahoochee Valley Pirates. JDCC nearly stole a victory from nationally ranked CVCC but fell short by one run in extra innings. The Hawks then traveled to Niceville to take on Northwest Florida State of the Panhandle Conference. A big inning early by the Raiders was too much to overcome, and the Hawks fell 6-3. The Warhawks’ next game is slated for Saturday, February 8, at home By Alicia Richardson The Lady Warhawks started out their season opener against the Central Alabama Trojans on Tuesday February 4th. The outcome was not what we had planned for or expected, but it is under our belts now, and those first game jitters are now out of sight. We learned some lessons to take with us into our upcoming games and for the rest of the season. Thank you to all of you who came out and supported our team! We hope to see everybody up in the stands soon. Coming on our schedule, we will face Southwest Mississippi at 11:00 and Northwest Florida right after at 3:00 on Friday, February 7th. Both games will be home. We will be playing Southwest Mississippi again the very next day, Saturday, February 8th 12:00 and 2:00 at home. Come out and support your Lady Warhawk softball team and cheer us on to victory! against Mississippi Gulf Coast. Come out and support the team! JDCC Basketball Season Continues By Fletcher Forte Coming into the new year, the JDCC men's basketball team recently went through a tough stretch of games. After a 4 game losing streak, the Warhawks rebounded with a huge road win against Alabama Southern and hoped to carry that momentum into their home game against LBW Monday night, Feb. 3. Even though that did not happen, and with their next few games being against the top teams in the conference, the Warhawks still look to make a statement and climb the standings to put themselves in prime position for the playoffs. Thursday, Feb. 6, the Warhawks will travel to Mobile to take on Bishop State to attempt to avenge their home loss earlier in the season. Good luck, and GO Warhawks! To support our Warhawks, the Leigh Library had a special Basketball display during the month of January. We hope everyone took time to look at it! Check out this month’s new display!
