Visitors today often have little idea of the rich historical
background surrounding Beaudesert, even before the
Romans built their roads across the country, Cannock
Chase had a population roaming its upland forest.
Nearby Castle Ring, now a popular visitor attraction, was a
vast earthwork, which would have needed some 10,000
men for its defence.
The Norman’s saw the value of the Chase as a hunting
ground; William I retained it as a royal forest and Henry II
had a house in the area. Later to raise money for his
crusades Richard I sold the Manor of Beaudesert to the
Bishop of Lichfield, until the reformation when Henry VIII
gave it to Sir William Paget, an ancestor of the first Marquis
of Anglesey.
The Anglesey family added great treasures to, and
enlarged the Old Hall. During the reign of George V the hall
shed it’s former glory and in 1935 many of the treasures
were sold off at a demolition sale.
Oak panelling, carved architrave’s, fire places, windows
and the great Waterloo Staircase are to be found in Carrick
Hill, a house built in the style of an English Manor House of
the late Elizabethan period, in Adelaide, Australia.
The Marquis, in 1937, gifted the parkland to the Scouts and
Guides of Staffordshire. The lands were conveyed to a
Charitable Trust - ‘The King George V Memorial Scouts
and Guides Recreational Lands’ more commonly known as
‘The Beaudesert Trust’.
The site now offers opportunities for young people from a
wide range of youth organisations to take advantage, all
through the year, of excitement and adventure within an
area of natural outstanding beauty.
Friends of Beaudesert
The Friend’s were founded to support the Beaudesert
Trust in meeting it’s charitable objectives. To help
maintain and enhance the fabric of buildings and to
protect the natural and historic environment.
An important objective is to bring together people with a
common interest in the development of the parkland. To
do this they provide a vital team of volunteers to
provide maintenance and support services and join
together to explore the history and beauty of the site.
