CLUB NEWS LETTER 05th September 2013 Ahoy Sailor The club lighthouse cruise is on this Sunday, 8 September, and you are invited! Like the naughty students who steal the garden gnome and take random pictures of it on their world tour, before returning it to its home (gnome at Eiffel Tower; Grand Canyon; Oktoberfest). Well, this Sunday, you and your yacht are the gnomes, in front of the lighthouses in our bay. The most intriguing crew/yacht/lighthouse pictures will be rewarded. SAILING We are very pleased to offer all interested members a regional race officers course, endorsed by SAS. Please seize this opportunity, as it will assist you to understand on-the-water race management issues, responsibilities for laying the course, and starting and finishing the races, all in terms of the racing rules of sailing. The outcome will be a very useful to both our club and our members. This will be taking place on Sunday 29 September. Please book your spot with Toni Mainprize ([email protected]). Ratings seem to conjure up emotions and sometimes even negativity, especially in the bar after a couple of beers. Let's talk more about ratings in a positive mind-set, and engage with associated performance issues like yacht preparation, boat handling, crew work and tactics. To demystify any perception about ratings, a full list of active yachts' ratings is posted on the notice board, and is readily available to view on the website. On the racing front, a number of yachts have made their way south for the two big annual regattas at GBYC and FBYC, and in doing so, the challenge time has been set for the Rock-toRock - a corrected time of just under 7 hours. Tame the Kraken! There are already some great stories coming out from this challenge, which you can access on the website. In conclusion, we've added two more dates to the Winter Wednesday Talks evening program in the main hall; so look out for the experts talking on Sails by Rick Nankin (6pm, 11 September), Ropes by Trevor "Farmer" Spilhaus (6pm, 18 September), and of course Sailing Tactics by Andrea Giovanini (6pm, 25 September)... Come sailing! Luke News from Cowes & Dartmouth: In variable sailing conditions David Bartholomew skippered Tokoloshe to a solid victory in class 3 in this year’s Cowes Week. Tokoloshe finished five points clear of the second placed boat in a forty five strong fleet. This is the fifth successive year that Tokoloshe has scored a podium finish in Cowes Week, having previously won in 2011” “Tokoloshe also scored a first place in class one in Dartmouth Sailing Week competed over four days at the end of August. In all nine races were sailed in light, flukey conditions and Tokoloshe had 7 firsts and two seconds. After discards she was left with an unbeatable 7 first places counting toward her overall score. The first yacht to take up and complete the Rock-to-Rock Challenge with the Kraken has posted her time on Saturday evening, within 18 hours of the challenge window opening. Well done to the Kavanagh family and crew aboard their Beneteau First 44.7 "RAY OF LIGHT", who completed the course in a declared elapsed time of 5:54:45, which translates to 6:58:36 on corrected time. That is a respectable time, and the advantage that they will hold for the time being is that it has been banked. We have no idea what the weather holds in store for us in the next 20 days that the challenge windows remains open, but remember, there is no restriction on the number of times you can take up the challenge in the challenge window. The scratch time to beat has been set: it's got to be a little under a sub seven hour race to win on corrected time. While that's very do-able; you've got to get out there and do it...and mind the sea monsters! While we are not yet sure whether the crew aboard RAY OF LIGHT chanced upon any sea monsters enroute, there have been vivid confirmations that some large tigers escaped from the yacht in the rough 30 knot WSW winds with southerly swell. SAILING The Rock-to-Rock Challenge with Kraken – 31 August to 20 September … This is a sailing time trial to determine the fastest yacht on corrected time (RCYC TCF) under sail from Barker’s Rock to Roman Rock, by any type of yacht with the appropriate COF for the voyage envisaged, and registered for the race with RCYC. During the sailing window, a Kraken ladder of all corrected times will be kept on display at RCYC. The sailing window opens at 00h00 31 August and closes at 24h00 20 September 2013. The annual Rock-to-Rock is awarded to the challenger with fastest corrected time for the roundthe –peninsula voyage under sail, with the prescribed annual window for sailing. The challenge coincides with the delivery period for yachts entering Gaul regatta at GBYC and Spring Regatta at FBYC. It is open to yachts from all yacht clubs. Every yacht that successfully completes the challenge by starting, finishing and recoding a time within the stipulated rules will be reward with a bottle of The Kraken Black Spiced Rum. Each competing yacht will submit a declaration, signed by the skipper and every crew member, stating their GPS start and finish time. Every yacht will make use and save a GPS tract (at 15m intervals) that can be inspected to prove the detail of their full voyage. Mooring at RCYC, GBYC, FBYC, HBYC are available subject to availability at the rates and terms dictated by those clubs and must be arranged in advance by each yacht. However, only if you are entered in and competing in FBYC Spring Regatta, and/or GBYC Gaul Regatta, are there mooring incentives available from those clubs subject to availability, and under strictly stipulated conditions and date limits. Entry form online. Prize giving will be held on Wednesday 25th September. Kraken Eye witness account: We had a nasty experience near Houtbay when something really big hit First Lady out of nowhere. A huge black shadow was spotted and we first thought that it was a whale. The crew was so traumatised that we decided to drop 2 of them off in Houtbay. We know they saw something extraordinary, but are in a comatose state at this stage and we cannot get a word out of them. The doctor on duty at mediclinic wanted to know what the big black spots on their arms were. I think we should keep all boats aware of that area and that they should keep a good lookout. We therefore are not going to complete the course. There is something lurking out here and we are going straight to GBYC. The Lighthouse Photographic Cruise … SAILING A fun cruising event to take place on Sunday 8th September. The idea is to get a “funky” photograph of your crew in front of one of our three lighthouses and come together for a braai at an anchorage. Meet at RCYC at 0900 for breakfast before mustering at No.10 for a gentle sail to Milnerton Lighthouse. Then on to Robben Island for a braai. The website will have all the details. This Saturday, there will be just 28 days to the opening cruise. That's just enough time to prepare if you are that way inclined, but it is certainly enough time to find out exactly who's yacht is moored next to the one you sail, to motivate them to get out onto the water for the day, and certainly enough time to get your family, friends and crew together to join your yachting neighbours out on the water in a celebration of sailing in Cape Town. Let's clear out the marina. No excuses! The Theme this year is “TRADITIONAL & COLOURFUL” SOCIAL EVENTS BURGEES Members belonging to a yacht club or sailing organization may fly their club's unique burgee both while underway and at anchor (however, not while racing). Sailing vessels may fly the burgee from the main masthead or from a lanyard under the starboard spreader on the mast. Power boats fly the burgee off a short staff on the bow. Burgees are available and on sale at reception. DRESSING OVERALL (BUNTING) Dressing a ship overall with bunting is only done in harbour to celebrate special occasions like regattas, rallies, national festivals and Opening Cruises! The International Code of Signal Flags are used to dress a vessel and unfortunately its not a case of stringing together whatever flags one pleases, for known or unknown to you, one may be hoisting an offensive or indecent message, in any language, for all to read. Convention suggests that you bend on flags and pennants alternately. There are twice as many letters as numeral pennants, so a possible sequence would be: Two flags, one pennant, two flags, one pennant, and so on e.g. from stem to stern; AB2, UJ1, KE3, GH6, IV5, FL4, DM7, PO Third Substitute, RN First Substitute, ST Zero, CX9, WQ8, ZY Second Substitute. Or E, Q, 3, G, 8, Z, 4, W, 6, P, 1, I, Answer Pennant, T, Y ,B, X, 1st Substitute, H, 3rd Substitute, D, F, 2nd Substitute, U, A, O, M, R, 2, J, 0, N, 9, K, 7, V, 5, L, C, S. Carousel is owned in a partnership that has worked extremely well, and she is great for club racing and cruising. Some advantages of owning in partnership: Core crew is instant; buy-in cost is more affordable; maintenance and capital improvement costs are quartered. Also, with more owners, the yacht actually gets used, and that is one sure way to keep her spic and span and well maintained. I am selling my share purely because I am going to focus more on racing on a recently acquired Simonis 35 [also owned in partnership]. Give me a call to discuss. Luke 0829248434.
