We sure can’t! There are a few special events happening at our school that we would love to share with you. Our first event is Picture Day on Tuesday, September 23rd. The fifth grade will begin pictures at 10:10-10:30 am. Miss Cook’s class will go first in our 5th grade hallway. Mrs. Lopez’s class will follow shortly after. Mrs. Jenkins class will end the picture session for the fifth graders. If you’re wanting to order pictures, please fill out the order form and send back with your child. The other event we want to share with you is Walk-A-Mile Day in PE. You will receive information about this next week. This is a time for students to walk a mile in PE. Parents can come that day and walk with the students, if you would like. Also, there will be a drawing to win prizes! Keep a look out for this note in your child’s Dragon Folder! Please support your child and encourage them by asking questions about what they are reading. Our 1st quarter book projects will be due October 9th, 2014. Please write students name, grade, and teachers name on the baggie. Booster Club has asked that Bonus Box Tops not be mixed with regular ones and to please send them separately! Page 1 of 2 Early Sign-Up for Parent/Teacher Conferences: Miss Cook’s Class Parent Teacher Conferences will begin the week of October 20th-24th. At Seitz Elementary, we give parents the opportunity to sign up in the office starting from September 16th-30th. If you do not sign up through the office, you will receive a conference date from your child’s classroom teacher. This is a great chance for you to pick your dates and what works best with your schedule. In the Classroom: Math: Students will take the Unit 2 Pretest. We will then begin activities over Decimal Addition and Subtraction. We will explore the place value of numbers and identify the right terminology of the value. We will use money to practice place value. Students will also investigate place value as fraction. Reading: We are finishing up the month with our cross curricular study of reading and space. Student are analyzing nonfiction space articles and improving their understanding of unknown words. To find out the meaning of these unknown we are focusing on the different types of context clues. Then we will begin our next unit on animals in October. Our first story is about grizzly bears. Students will practice comparing and contrasting the relationships between multiple grizzly bear texts. Science: During Science, we will explore the universe and its stars. We will also explore the Earth and the Solar System. To do this we will read multiple e-books and other types of nonfiction texts. There will be other activities to help assist our investigation. Social Studies: We are wrapping up our study on the exploration of encounters between American Indians and European explores. Students will learn about causes and conflicts associated with exploring and settling in North America. Writing: We will continue our narrative writing unit and improve our revisions of our stories. Students have worked extremely hard so far, and we will complete this unit at the beginning of October. 5th Grade Monday Focus Meeting Agendas: Monday Focus Meetings are held school-wide. Each 5th grade classroom will hold a weekly Class Meeting. During these meetings, we want to create positive classroom leaders and inform students about bullying and how to prevent it from happening. Week of September 22nd: For this week’s meeting, we will work on building good character. We will discuss trust and what it means to be a trustworthy friend. Week of September 29th: For this week’s meeting, we will discuss what doing our personal best looks like.
