Dear Fifth Grade Families,
Can you all believe it’s almost October? We sure can’t! There are a few
special events happening at our school that we would love to share with
you.
Our first event is Picture Day on Tuesday, September 23rd. The fifth grade will
begin pictures at 10:10-10:30 am. Miss Cook’s class will go first in our 5th
grade hallway. Mrs. Lopez’s class will follow shortly after. Mrs. Jenkins class
will end the picture session for the fifth graders. If you’re wanting to order
pictures, please fill out the order form and send back with your child.
The other event we want to share with you is Walk-A-Mile Day in PE. You will
receive information about this next week. This is a time for students to walk a
mile in PE. Parents can come that day and walk with the students, if you
would like. Also, there will be a drawing to win prizes! Keep a look out for this
note in your child’s Dragon Folder!
Thank you,

Early Sign-Up for Parent/Teacher Conferences:
Miss Cook’s Class
Parent Teacher Conferences will begin the week of October 20th-24th. At
Seitz Elementary, we give parents the opportunity to sign up in the office
starting from September 16th-30th. If you do not sign up through the office,
you will receive a conference date from your child’s classroom teacher.
This is a great chance for you to pick your dates and what works best with
your schedule.
In the Classroom:
Math: Students will take the Unit 2 Pretest. We will then begin activities
over Decimal Addition and Subtraction. We will explore the place value
of numbers and identify the right terminology of the value. We will use
money to practice place value. Students will also investigate place value
as fraction.
Reading: We are finishing up the month with our cross curricular study of
reading and space. Student are analyzing nonfiction space articles and
improving their understanding of unknown words. To find out the meaning
of these unknown we are focusing on the different types of context clues.
Then we will begin our next unit on animals in October. Our first story is
about grizzly bears. Students will practice comparing and contrasting the
relationships between multiple grizzly bear texts.
Science: During Science, we will explore the universe and its stars. We will
also explore the Earth and the Solar System. To do this we will read
multiple e-books and other types of nonfiction texts. There will be other
activities to help assist our investigation.
Social Studies: We are wrapping up our study on the exploration of
encounters between American Indians and European explores. Students
will learn about causes and conflicts associated with exploring and
settling in North America.
Writing: We will continue our narrative writing unit and improve our
revisions of our stories. Students have worked extremely hard so far, and
we will complete this unit at the beginning of October.
5th Grade Monday
Focus Meeting
Agendas:
Monday Focus Meetings are held
school-wide. Each 5th grade
classroom will hold a weekly Class
Meeting. During these meetings,
we want to create positive
classroom leaders and inform
students about bullying and how
to prevent it from happening.
Week of September 22nd:
For this week’s meeting, we will
work on building good
character. We will discuss trust
and what it means to be a
trustworthy friend.
Week of September 29th:
For this week’s meeting, we will
discuss what doing our personal
best looks like. We will set goals
on how we can succeed in
always doing our person best as
an individual and as a class.
