Introduction
When was the last time you actually used a crayon? For children, crayons serve as the ultimate
boredom relief, but they have little function outside of kids’ crafts. Today, adults are returning to
their crafting roots, testing the limits of creativity, and realizing how extraordinary everyday
items can be. Crayons are basically colored wax, so what better to turn them into than a fun,
colorful, candle? Using materials that are widely available, affordable, and easy to use, this
project works for every budget and skill level. The crayon candle method is simple and flexible,
making the design possibilities endless. Besides the crayons, all the materials we use have
equally affordable alternatives. Here, we’ll teach you the steps to create four basic styles of
crayon candles:




the egg
the bottle cap
the muffin wrapper
the glass holder

Prep Instructions:
1. Begin by preheating the oven to 230 degrees Fahrenheit.
2. To help with removing the wrappers from the crayons, fill a large sauce pan with
water and ice.
3. Dump the crayons in the large sauce pan and let them soak for 10 minutes. The
longer the better.
4. To prep the eggs, begin by using a needle, safety pin, push pin, or even a pen,
hold the egg in your hand and carefully poke a hole into the top and bottom of
the shell.
5. Carefully pick at the holes with your utensil to make them the desired size
without breaking the shell, one big and one small.
6. Run the egg under your faucet making sure one of the holes is directly under the
running water and the other is facing down into the sink. The contents of the egg
will slowly fall out of the bottom hole.
7. After making the holes, insert the string through the larger hole all the way to the
bottom.
8. Using a pin push the string through the smaller hole to guide it through the
bottom hole.
9. After pushing the string through the hole, use tweezers to pull the string all the
way through.
10. If you are using yarn or a shoelace, to keep it burning longer, submerge it in
some of the melted crayon wax. This will make the wick burn more slowly and
evenly.

Clean Up



Throw away all the paper from the crayons that you removed.
Empty the large sauce pan filled with water in a sink.
Wipe the area you used to create your crayon candle using a paper towel.
o If any melted crayons spilled onto any counters or tables you may need to dampen
the paper towel with water and a little dish soap.

Wash the large sauce pan and muffin pan using a sponge.
o You may need to use the rough side of the sponge if any melted crayon spilled
onto the muffin pan.

Troubleshooting
Peeling the Wrappers Off of the Crayons
●
Soak the crayons in ice cold water to make the process easier! 10 minutes should suffice,
but the longer the better!
●
If the glue persists, allow the crayons to sit in the water an additional 5 minutes, and take
a paper towel and wipe the glue away.
Hollowing out an Egg
●
Using a needle, safety pin, push pin, or even a pen, hold the egg in your hand and
carefully poke a hole into the top and bottom of the shell.
●
Carefully pick at the holes with your utensil to make them the desired size without
breaking the shell.
●
Run the egg under your faucet making sure one of the holes is directly under the running
water and the other is facing down into the sink. The contents of the egg will slowly fall
out of the bottom hole.
Burning the Candle Wick
●
Before putting the wick in place, submerge it in melted crayon wax. This will make the
wick burn more slowly and evenly.
●
When placing your wick into the candle, allow a half an inch of excess wick to rest across
the bottom of the candle. This will allow your candle to burn longer.
Burning the Crayons for your Bottle Cap Candles
●
A hairdryer at its highest heat setting will melt the crayon, but much more slowly.
●
Another alternative is to put your bottle caps onto a cookie sheet and break a crayon into
four pieces.
○
Place one piece into each bottle cap you have.
○
Bake the caps at 350 degrees for 5 -10 minutes, checking them frequently.
Holding the Wick in Place
●
Jar:
5
○
●
wrap the wick around a pencil or pen and place the pencil over the length of the
jar so the wick is dangling down through the middle of your candle.
Cupcake and bottle cap:
○
while waiting for the wax to dry, take the wick and place it in your candle until it
is touching the bottom and rising up through the middle.
○
Ensure the wick is much longer than what you want it to be as the outcome.
○
Drape the remainder of the wick over the handle of a cabinet or for faster results
place the candle in your refrigerator and draw the wick through the bars of one of
the shelves in your fridge, making sure the wick is in the center of the candle.
○
Allow to cool 10-15 minutes before moving.
