THE SHILLONG TIMES, SHILLONG, TUESDAY, MAY 2, 2017 (TWELVE) Rohit takes Mumbai Indian to IPL play-offs MUMBAI: Skipper Rohit Sharma played a sublime knock to lead Mumbai Indians to a five-wicket win over laggards Royal Challengers Bangalore, ensuring themselves of a berth at the IPL play-offs, here on Monday. RCB, opting to bat, put up 162 for eight with Ab de Villiers hammering 43 off 27 balls. It was a rather straightforward chase for Mumbai as the home team reeled off 59 runs in the last six overs, courtesy some crisp hitting from Rohit, who ended with 56 off 37 balls. Hardik Pandya remained unbeaten with the captain, scoring 14 off nine balls. With the win at Wankhede, Mumbai moved to the top of the points table with eight wins out of 10 games fetching them 16 points. On the other hand, it was another disappointing performance from the star-studded RCB, who are very much out of contention for a play-off berth. The loss was their eighth in 11 matches. Fittingly, Rohit hit the winning runs, a cracking drive past mid-off. It was one of the six boundaries he hit alongside a maximum. The quick start to the chase was provided by Jos Buttler (33 off 21) and Nitish Rana (27 off 28) after Parthiv Patel was out for a first ball duck. Earlier, Mitchell McClenaghan claimed three Mumbai Indians’ Rohit Sharma plays a shot during the IPL match against Royal Challengers Bangalore at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Monday. (PTI) wickets as Mumbai Indians produced a disciplined bowling performance to restrict RCB to a modest total. Besides McClenaghan (3/34), Krunal Pandya (2/34) took two wickets, while Karn Sharma (1/23) and Jasprit Bumrah (1/33) accounted for wicket apiece. For RCB, de Villiers emerged as the top-scorer after he blasted three fours and as many sixes during his 27-ball innings, while Pawan Negi (35) and Kedar Jadhav (28) provided the late charge to take the team past the 150-mark. RCB lost their first wicket in the fourth over when Mandeep Singh (17) went for the slog sweep and was caught by Hardik. In the sixth over, McClenaghan removed Virat Kohli (20) when the RCB skipper flicked a slower ball straight to short midwicket and Rohit took a simple catch, reducing the visitors slipped to 40 for two. De Villiers then blasted McClenaghan over backward point for a four before sending him over sweeper cover for a maximum as RCB scored 52-2 in the powerplay overs. The South African gave Krunal Pandya the same treatment as RCB accumulated 13 runs off the ninth over. Chasing a modest 162 to win, the hosts were reeling at 42 for four when the England batsman came out firing on all cylinders to ensure that the good job done by the bowlers does not go waste. Stokes braved cramps towards the end of the chase and batted with determination to help RPS take two points and enhance their Play-offs chances. Leg-spinner Imran Tahir had rocked the Lions' batting order with a three-wicket burst to help his side bundle out the rivals for a modest 161 in 19.5 overs. The Lions were off to a flying start with Brendon McCullum (45) and Ishan Kishan (31) adding 55 quick runs for the first wicket but lost wickets in a heap to lose way. Tahir not only broke the opening stand but also got rid of Aaron Finch (13) and Dwyane Smith (0) in successive balls. The South African spinner conceded 27 runs in his four overs. Lions could not exploit a good batting wicket and if it was not for Dinesh Karthik's sensible 29-run knock, they would not have put on board a respectable total. Paceman Jaydev Unadkat (3/29) also took three wickets to wipe off the tail. Left-arm paceman Pradeep Sangwan provided the Lions a perfect start by scalping dismissing both Ajinkya Rahane (4) and Steve Smith (4) in the very first over. Soon it came 42 for four when Manoj Tiwary (0) was trapped by Basil Thampi and Rahul Tripathi (6) was run out. From here, Stokes joined forces with MS Dhoni and the duo added 76 runs for the fifth-wicket to frustrate the Lions. Stokes' onslaught began when he smashed Ravindra Jadeja for two sixes to collect 15 runs from the 10th over and never looked back. Dhoni played the second-fiddle as the former India captain was happy rotating the strike and finding a boundary here and there. RPS needed 60 off the final five overs. Stokes creamed off 16 runs from Dwayne Smith's 16th over but Dhoni hit one straight to McCullum in the next over by Thampi. Stokes, though, stayed till the end to take the side to finish line. His 103 came off 63 balls with seven fours and six sixes. RPS now have 12 points from 10 matches to be in fourth spot while Lions are sixth with six points. HYDERABAD: There is no bigger advantage like playing at 'home' and that's precisely the reason why Sunrisers captain David Warner wants his team to turn the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Uppal into a virtual 'fortress'. "These (Hyderabad) are different conditions. The thing here is that we are trying to turn this ground into our fortress. Every team tries to win as many games at home as they can," said Warner, who enthralled one and all with his 59-ball-126 against Kolkata Knight Riders. "Whether you win or loss the toss, you have to have a positive mindset and tell the guys to play freely. I expect my guys to go out there and give their 100 percent," said Warner. The defending champions are in firm contention to seal a berth for the play-offs. Australia remained in the second position while India, which will defend the ICC Champions Trophy title in the UK in June, has swapped places with ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 finalist New Zealand. Both the sides have gained points following the update but India's five-point gain against New Zealand's increase of three means India are now ranked third with 117 points and New Zealand a notch below at fourth with 115 points in their kitty. The West Indies are in a spot of bother as per the latest rankings list released on Monday. =The eighth-ranked Pakistan has opened up a ninepoint advantage over ninthranked the West Indies, which can prove decisive since England plus the next seven highest-ranked sides as on 30 September 2017 will qualify automatically for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. Both Pakistan and ninthranked West Indies have dropped points following the update - Pakistan slipping from 90 points to 88 points and the West Indies sliding from 83 points to 79 points. However, Pakistan’s pre- update seven-point gap has extended to nine points. As such, the table now reflects all matches from May 1 2014, with matches played from 1 May 2016 carrying 100 per cent weightage. (PTI) DD skipper Zaheer likely to miss remaining IPL matches NEW DELHI: Delhi Daredevils skipper Zaheer Khan is unlikely to play in the remainder of the Indian Premier League due to a hamstring strain. Zaheer had suffered the injury during a match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Edens Gardens and according to team sources, he will miss the next match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Tuesday. However, with back-to- Zaheer Khan back matches and considering his age and past problems with hamstring, it is unlikely that Zaheer will be able to recover in time. The 38-year-old seamer had missed the last game against Kings XI Punjab where Delhi were bowled out for 67. "Zaheer will be missing the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad tomorrow due to the hamstring strain that he suffered during the match against Kolkata Knight Riders but he is unlikely to make a comeback," a team source said. "He will have little time to recover from the strain due to the hectic schedule of IPL. Karun Nair will be the stand-in captain for tomorrow," he added. Delhi are languishing at the eighth spot with only two wins in their eight games so far. Mohammad Abbas led the visiting bowlers' effort with two more wickets to finish with four for 56, the best figures by a Pakistan fast bowler in Test innings at the venue, bettering Wasim Akram's four for 73 in 1988, as the home team lost their last four wickets for the addition of 26 more runs. West Indies' hopes of pushing towards a total closer to the 400-run mark were dashed within the first nine deliveries of the morning as their firstday heroes, Roston Chase and Jason Holder, were dismissed without any addition to the overnight total of 286 for six. Holder was the first to go, his late decision to pull away from an Abbas delivery resulting in an inside-edge to wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed. Mohammad Amir then removed Chase, whose 131 was the first Test century by a Barbadian on home soil for 18 years. Drawn forward by a fulllength delivery, his indeterminate prod resulted in a thick outside edge for Younis Khan to snare his third catch of the innings at second slip. Additional Chief Secretary P.W Ingty, who is dealing with the matter, said the work order was issued to Avvas Infotech Private Limited. The firm will tie up with the East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner to start enrollment. He said the process will start this month. Ingty said details of the National Population Register (NPR) will be considered before enrollment. However, applicants who are not under NPR can produce other documents, including EPIC, for getting Aadhaar number. The firm will charge Rs 39-40 per enrollment and the Centre had already provided fund for the project. when Bishoo lifted an ondrive to Yasir Shah at mid-on. Shah then wrapped up the innings when Alzarri Joseph was bowled missing a heave at a full-toss in the leg-spinner's first over of the morning. Pakistan were fortunate to reach the interval with the openers still together as Vishaul Singh failed to hold on to a low catch at wide midon offered by Ahmed Shehzad off Shannon Gabriel. None of the other bowlers appeared particularly threatening in the brief passage of play before the break although Chase was able to extract considerable turn and bounce delivering his offspinners into the considerable rough that has already appeared on an otherwise rockhard pitch. (AFP) ‘Mission-40 a reality, not rhetoric’ SHILLONG: BJP State general secretary Bashailang Khongwir said on Monday the party's Mission-40 in the 2018 Assembly elections is a reality and not rhetoric. Reiterating BJP's earlier claims to become the single largest party in Meghalaya, Khongwir said, "Many prominent leaders are joining the party and with this trend, we see no difficulty in getting close to Mission-40 (winning 40 Assembly seats)." He also rubbished reports that BJP is planning a divide and rule policy on communal lines. Addressing the media on Monday, Khongwir said the party has set up a strong 'Army of social media' to counteract political propaganda by opponents. "We are very much aware of the propaganda spread by other political parties," said Khongwir. Changing colours Around 20 politicians in the State are in touch with BJP, Khongwir said when asked whether any politicians have sent feelers to the party. Referring to chances given to certain failed politicians, he said, "We cannot judge people with the same yardstick. We have to do our homework and survey. We will check on the positive report as well as the winnability factor of a candidate." "There is no indication from the Election Commission of India for holding early polls," Chief Electoral Officer Frederick Kharkongor said on Monday. There were rumours that the Meghalaya Assembly polls will be advanced to the end of this year. However, Kharkongor said though the EC had discussed election preparedness with the chief electoral officers of the states which will go to polls this year and the next, there was no talks on holding polls early. In the North East, the States which will go to polls in 2018 are Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura and Mizoram. While Gujarat polls are scheduled for this year, Himachal Pradesh will go to polls next year. In 2013, the election was announced in January and the polling date was February 23. Kharkongor, however, said he is in touch with the deputy commissioners regarding election preparedness so that they can mobilise themselves. Early election for Meghalaya is unlikely since Puja will be held in September followed by examinations in November and Christmas in December. Kharkongor said the Election department is also looking at the enrollment of new voters who have attained 18 years of age in January next year. Kharkongor said the EC will hold a meeting soon with the chief electoral officers of the poll-bound states. 2 held with Rs 1.32-lakh fake notes in WGH By Our Reporter By Our Reporter We want to turn Uppal Stadium into Sunrisers’ fortress: Warner The Shillong Times 33% NO 67% 24.4 ---10.6 ---60 ---83 ---12.2 ---- UMIAM WATER LEVEL 3175.20 feet (at 4pm) SHILLONG: Two persons were arrested with counterfeit notes worth Rs 1.32 lakh in West Garo Hills on Monday. (Contd on P-10) remain elusive By Our Reporter SHILLONG: The menace of drug addiction is turning into a hydra with police finding it difficult to identify the big fish involved in the supply chain. In the past one year, several small-time drug traffickers were arrested in the city but how far the netting of fries is helping in addressing the problem remains a question. Speaking to reporters here on Monday, East Khasi Hills SP Davis R. Marak said the city is a transit point for drug supply and big players might not be here. "It is quite difficult to establish a chain from smalltime drug traffickers who have been arrested by police in the recent past," he added. Shillong has multiple entry points for drugs and the most common route for smugglers is Myanmar-Manipur-Silchar-Shillong route. The SP said the local police are coordinating with the neighbouring states and other agencies who are working against drug abuse so that the supply chain can be broken.
