Reading Log Choices
Choose one of the following to complete each night.
Summary - Summarize what happened. This is a good strategy to use when an important or
complicated event happens in a book. (3 sentence minimum)
Prediction - Predict what will happen next in the book and tell why you think this will happen. This
strategy is good to use why a character faces a decision. (3 sentence minimum)
Pose a Question - Write down a “THICK” question you have if you ever feel confused when reading
or need clarification. (May only be used once per week.)
What if …? How did …? Why did…? What would happen if …? What caused…? What might…?
How would you feel if you…? What character traits describe ____? Why do you think…? Why is…?
Word Finder - Write down a difficult word from the story that you do not understand with its
definition. Use it in a complete sentence. Draw a quick sketch to help you remember the word. (May
only be used once per week)
Connection - Write down a connection you make to the story or a character in the book. For
example, tell how this reminds you of your life or someone that you know and tell why or how. The
connection you make maybe:



Text to Self – I identify with a character, setting, event
Text to World – something I am reading about is happening or has happened
Text to Text – this book reminds me of another book, poem, play I’ve read, song I’ve heard,
or movie I’ve seen
Key Event - Describe a key event in the story. This is a good technique for turning points and
major events from your book. (3 sentence minimum.)
