Use!these!ice!creations!to!decorate!your!porch,!deck,!or!trees!outside.!

Get!a!foil!cake,!pie,!or!casserole!container!(in!any!shape).!
Fill!the!container!with!cranberries,!pine!branches,!small!pine!

cones,!cut!up!apples!or!oranges,!parsley,!carrot!peels,!pebbles,!–!
anything!!!!

Fill!the!container!with!water!and!leave!outside!to!freeze.!

Pour!slowly!if!you’ve!created!a!design,!or!fill!with!water!first!and!then!add!
the!other!pieces.!

We!had!an!interesting!experience!last!week!with!a!furry!visitor!to!our!bird!feeder!tree!on!the!
deck.!!The!pine!cone!feeders!we!so!carefully!prepared!for!our!feathered!friends!were!discovered!
by!friend!Squirrel.!!We!were!happy!to!share!with!Squirrel,!but!he!had!other!ideas;!he!wanted!our!
pine!cones!all!to!himself!and!didn't!want!to!share!with!the!birds!!!He!would!locate!a!pine!cone!on!
our!tree!and!quickly!chew!through!the!yarn!hanger.!!He!would!then!proceed!to!drag!the!entire!
pine!cone!off!of!the!deck!and!into!the!woods.!!We!were!astonished!as!he!came!back!for!yet!
another!pine!cone,!and!we!had!to!set!a!guard!until!the!pine!cones!could!be!taken!off!of!the!tree!
and!carried!inside!for!hanger!alteration.!!Now!they!are!receiving!wire!hangers.!!We!are!checking!to!
see!if,!when!friend!Squirrel!comes!back!to!share!our!bird!food,!he!finds!another!way!to!outwit!us.!!!

2nd!Grade!News!

The!bright7eyed!and!warm7hearted!second!
graders!have!been!bringing!their!considerable!
will!to!the!tasks!of!memorizing!times!tables,!
solving!increasingly!difficult!riddles,!and!
acting!out!for!their!classmates!and!then!
spelling!words!from!common!families!such!as!
ight,!all,!ar,!aw,!ill!and!ow.!Their!imaginations!
are!living!into!the!stories!of!saints!and!holy!
people!from!around!the!world,!as!well!as!the!
tales!of!animals!who!can!be!tricky,!greedy,!
clever!and!revengeful!77!to!name!just!a!few!
qualities!!With!winter!in!full!force,!we!have!
walked!to!lower!Chester!for!several!skating!
outings.!Even!the!children!newer!to!skating!
are!taking!up!the!sport!with!enthusiasm.!This!
past!week!during!pentatonic!flute!class,!all!
the!'birds'!were!able!to!fly!from!their!'nests',!
allowing!for!a!fuller!range!of!expression,!and!
the!chance!to!play!more!complex!pieces.!

The!4th!Graders!are!enjoying!the!snow!and!
relatively!warmer!temperatures!outside!by!
sledding,!ice!skating,!and!fort!building.!It's!a!
joy!to!watch!them!play!in!ways!that!support!
their!development77!even!"big"!kids!need!
outdoor!play!time!every!day!!Inside,!we!are!
starting!a!new!Math!block,!with!a!focus!on!
fractions.!The!children!get!to!explore!fractions!
in!so!many!varied!ways,!making!it!easier!for!
them!to!learn!the!complexities!that!can!come!
along!with!this!new!concept.!We!are!still!
exploring!"food!fractions",!moving!the!
fractions!in!steps,!making!our!own!paper!
fractions,!and!playing!fun!(and!challenging!)!
fraction!games.!The!children!are!also!
spending!some!of!these!winter!days!reaching!
out!to!those!in!need77!singing!at!Aftenro!for!
the!elderly!residents!and!deciding!what!kind!
of!project!will!serve!the!animals!best.!They!
have!enjoyed!brightening!up!the!days!for!
other!people!and!animals.!
