2 0 1 5 A N N U A L R E P O R T BUILDING on the Best 2 015 ANNUAL REPO RT Our Mission Our Vision The mission of The Consortium for Graduate Study in Management, an alliance of leading American business schools and some of our country’s top corporations, is to enhance diversity in business education and leadership by helping to reduce the serious underrepresentation of African Americans, Hispanic Americans and Native Americans in both our member schools’ enrollments and the ranks of management. We believe this mission can be achieved by recruiting for graduate business education qualified U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents who can demonstrate a commitment to The Consortium’s mission and can best assist The Consortium in pursuing this mission. The vision of The Consortium is to increase the representation of African Americans, Hispanic Americans and Native Americans in management careers in the United States. We realize this vision by recruiting outstanding students who have shown a commitment to diversity and connecting them with toptier MBA programs and corporations. 1963 1966 1966 Sterling Schoen’s research shows no Fortune 500 companies employ African Americans in management. Consortium founded. First schools: Washington University in St. Louis; the University of Wisconsin-Madison; Indiana University-Bloomington. Ford Foundation provides two-year, $300,000 grant to The Consortium. 2 015 ANNUAL REPO RT To our students, alumni, member schools and corporate partners: Osiyo! Our visitors to Phoenix in June may remember that traditional Cherokee greeting, used to open our annual Orientation Program & Career Forum. In the 49 years we’ve staged this important conference for our incoming class, we’ve never taken it to Arizona — and based on the success of this year’s OP, it likely won’t be the last time. We were pleased to continue shedding our reputation as “only a Midwestern organization” with the westward expansion of OP. But more than that, as you’ll read in the pages of this year’s annual report, OP 2015 was a tremendous success. We can summarize constituents’ feedback by saying we’ve earned rave reviews for the programming, the accommodations, the value of the event and the quality of this year’s class. And what a class it is: the largest in Consortium history at 416, recruited with a nearly new recruiting team. It’s the second consecutive year we’ve drawn a class of more than 400 students. Our numbers tell us that our growth is broad-based and not only the result of adding schools to The Consortium: Median per-school enrollment has climbed steadily in the past 10 years, from 11 to 21 students. Average per-school enrollment also rose in the same period from 14 to 23. Our experience with the Phoenix class tells us this as well: Its members are truly part of a gracious, humble, talented and proud class, destined to do great things in their MBA programs and beyond. After a difficult fundraising environment during the economic downturn, 2015 showed record-setting results for corporate underwriting. New partners and upgrades to existing partnerships added $288,000 to the fiscal 2015 annual fund. Plus, the amount awarded in MBA fellowships has now topped $300 million in The Consortium’s nearly 50-year history. We’ll explore those areas in more detail in the finance and administration segment of this report. Growth and recovery also showed in our student employment numbers: The percentage of Consortium students leaving their MBA programs with full-time jobs jumped from 90 percent in 2012 to 94 percent in 2014. The percentage of new MBAs hired by one of our corporate partners is also up from 42 percent to 45 percent. As we begin The Consortium’s 50th year, our team is excited by our momentum, even as we continue to work toward a day when our organization is no longer needed. Watch for big things in 2016 as we commemorate our Golden Anniversary and prepare for another record-setting OP in our hometown of St. Louis. Yours truly, David B. Wooten Chairman of the Board of Trustees Peter J. Aranda, III CEO and Executive Director 1967 1968 First Orientation Program welcomes Consortium expands to five member 1966inaugural class of 21 African American men. schools. Consortium founded. First schools: Washington University in St. Louis; the University of Wisconsin-Madison; Indiana University-Bloomington. 1968 Consortium publishes its first annual report. 2 015 ANNUAL REPO RT LOOKING AHEAD: UNDERGRADUATES AND COMMUNICATION We know our work is influencing diversity in the ranks of MBA programs and corporations. But we also know there is more we can do. We’ve been laying the groundwork for an expansion of The Consortium’s mission that will support students earlier in their career — as undergraduates. Our research shows that among undergraduates, underrepresented minorities are more likely to drop out of college, suffer academically or often face unemployment or underemployment when they graduate. We believe earlier intervention by our academic contacts, corporate partners and alumni can help. With research, due diligence about related programs, a review of our systems and our capacity and prototypes for an application process, we’ve positioned The Consortium for that additional work. Peter Aranda and Anthony Davis are presenting the program to potential partners that can help us launch the program. Recruiting team nets record-setting class For the second consecutive year, The Consortium enrolled 400-plus students, bettering the size of the previously record-setting class we enrolled in 2014. The milestone is all the more noteworthy because it was accomplished with a mostly rookie recruiting team: Three of the four members had worked for The Consortium less than one year. After our 2014-15 recruiting season, we received 1,074 applications. From that, 626 students were accepted to at least one of our member schools. Following a flawlessly executed March fellowship selection meeting, we offered a record-setting 369 fellowships to Consortium prospects — 26 more than last year. The number is significant because it shows growth in our member schools’ desire to grow the diversity of their programs by offering more fellowships. Additionally, the database operations department, collaborating with the recruiting team, completed the implementation of our student resume database. We launched the new CGSM Online system in April 2014, powered by a more user-friendly and reliable platform from vendor MBA Focus. The system drives our online database, allowing students and alumni to update profile and resume information, which is available for corporate partners to review. We completed the launch in July 2014 by opening the system to alumni — the final phase of our conversion to this platform. Meanwhile, we’ve taken steps to do more outreach and communication with existing constituents through our website, email newsletters and social media. We’ve hired a communications director who regularly engages with representatives from our partners, schools, alumni and students. We produce and share news about Consortium success stories — our alumni! — and we’ve redesigned The Consortium’s homepage to better highlight the content we produce. 1,075 APPLICATIONS RECEIVED FOR 2015 CLASS 628 STUDENTS ADMITTED TO AT LEAST ONE MEMBER SCHOOL 369 FELLOWSHIPS OFFERED 416 STUDENTS ENROLLED IN CLASS OF 2017 235 STUDENTS RECEIVING FELLOWSHIPS Nearly 440 first- and second-year students attended OP 2015 in Phoenix. It was one of the most highly rated sessions of the conference. Wiley Price/CGSM With aggressive cost management and a dynamic program, The Consortium brought in the 49th annual Orientation Program & Career Forum $100,000 under budget, while earning rave reviews from attendees. More than 1,200 students, corporate partners, university representatives and alumni attended our five-day program in Phoenix. This year’s attendee survey confirmed the success of programming, facilities and career development opportunities in Phoenix. Use of our mobile app continued to climb year over year—significantly among corporate partners—moving us closer to eliminating the printed resource guide at future OPs. Student use of the app was already nearly universal. We also piloted a self check-in kiosk for corporate partners, school representatives and alumni upon their arrival at OP. Only a quarter of corporate partners surveyed said they tried it, while those same surveys said nearly two-thirds of school representatives and half of alumni used it—giving the procedure favorable reviews. Finally, a high majority of corporate partners said they were satisfied with the opportunities to interact with students and with students’ preparation. But in survey comments, partners expressed a desire for more interview time and students felt significant pressure to interview outside scheduled times — clearly an opportunity for future events. 35% MOBILE APP USE AMONG CORPORATE PARTNERS 93% MOBILE APP USE AMONG STUDENTS “Blew me away how engaged I was. The strategy focused on building relationships with new corporate partners; reclaiming partners that had previously worked with The Consortium; and retaining existing partners. The result: We secured 75 corporate partners in 2015, including 12 new partners. Our partners contributed nearly $1.9 million to the annual fund — 11 percent over the goal and 7 percent above last year’s performance. Meanwhile, 97 percent of our partners also participated in underwriting the Orientation Program, contributing more than $1.14 million — about 4.1 percent over our target and 6 percent over our 2014 total. NEW COMPANIES JOIN THE CONSORTIUM TEAM Nearly every corporate partner of The Consortium participated in the Orientation Program & Career Forum in 2015 — including the 12 new companies that became partners this year. TEAM stands for “Together Everyone Achieves More,” and the trophy is awarded to the class that has done the most to ensure that The Consortium’s presence is felt on campus. Only one other school has won three TEAM trophies: the University of Southern California. Brian Treffeisen/CGSM A first for First of Many The crowd roared its approval at the news: For the first time in its history, the First of Many campaign reached 100 percent participation by members of the Class of 2017 at our last OP. The announcement came at the 2015 Schoen Dinner, six years after beginning the annual campaign to encourage every new Consortium member in each new class to contribute any amount to our organization. The campaign creates camaraderie within schools and gentle competition among them, but more importantly, research shows that making an initial contribution to an organization makes donors more likely to continue giving. Starting at the beginning with each new Consortium class can create the habit of philanthropic giving among our membership. 1983 -84 1985 Consortium expands to nine schools. Peter Aranda becomes a Consortium fellow, attends Washington University. WILLIAM G. MAYS: 1945-2014 The Consortium lost a dear friend and partner with the death of William Mays on Dec. 4, 2014. The entrepreneur, publisher and business leader started his business career as a Consortium fellow in Indiana University’s class of 1973. He went on to found his own chemical company in Indianapolis, ranked 22 among Black Enterprise’s list of top 100 companies. For his contributions to The Consortium and its community, he was the second person to win the Wallace L. Jones Lifetime Achievement Award, in 2005. 2 015 ANNUAL REPO RT An exceptional year By any measure, we can say that The Consortium had its best year ever from a financial perspective. Diligent outreach to partners, aggressive cost containment and some fortunate circumstances combined for an exceptional fiscal 2015. Our results — in what might be described as a “down” diversity market — suggest The Consortium is increasing market share as we attract new corporate partners and increase revenue. And grow we did: Total revenue was up 7.3 percent in 2015 over 2014, excluding tuition remission, as a result of an increase in corporate partners (75 vs. 69). Those partners contributed more in three major revenue categories: the annual fund, Orientation Program underwriting and OP registration. Meanwhile, we held back on filling some staff openings, without affecting operations. That, along with other cost-saving measures, kept total expenses in 2015 flat year over year. Our 2015 results have led to a $640,000 surplus on The Consortium’s balance sheet. Hotel-related expenses (rooms, food and beverage, and audio-visual support) of nearly $470,000 were about $182,000 less than 2014. Combined with non-hotel audio/visual expenses and airfare, the total cost of OP 2015 was down about 20 percent year over year, and about $100,000 under what we had budgeted for the conference. A favorable rooming contract — compared to the red-hot Austin market — largely drove the savings, but food and beverage expenses also dropped substantially. year-over-year. With only 45 fewer people visiting Phoenix than Austin, the results validated our suspicions: The success of OP doesn’t depend wholly on its location. A solid program and excellent corporate partner participation draws attendance. And participate they did: We had 655 partners register for OP — the most ever — contributing about $313,000 in revenue to the bottom line for OP. 1996 1997 1999 Phyllis Scott Buford becomes Consortium’s third leader as president and CEO.
