What were the Espionage and Sedition Acts? Why did many people feel these acts were unconstitutional? Congress passed the Espionage and Sedition Acts to stop people from critiquing war efforts during WW I. Due to these laws, a person could go to jail for 20 years for merely opposing the war. The First Amendment was severely violated by these measures. The First Amendment states that people should have the freedom of speech. These laws prohibited the freedom of speech and made spoken opposition to the war illegal. Copyright, USHistoryTeachers.com All Rights Reserved.
