A Letter From Our President and CEO
Did you know that our
Foundation’s Community Grant
programs provide funding for
local non-profit organizations
and charitable movements in
the Roanoke area? This, of
course, includes the charity care
and discounts that we provide
our own residents when they
are going through a difficult
Russ Barksdale Jr., MPA,
time and need our support.
FACHE
Roanoke has an incredibly
active community with hundreds of annual community
events and annual non-profit fundraisers. Supporting
our Roanoke community efforts is vital to the mission
of Friendship. Last year alone, Friendship donated
$7,388,899 in Community Contributions and Charity
Care, and this does not take into account the thousands
of hours of volunteer services provided by our staff and
medical professionals to other non-profit organizations
within our community.
For example, one non-profit
organization that is dear to the
Friendship Family is the
Juvenile Diabetes Research
Foundation (JDRF). This
organization works toward
finding a cure for diabetes
which affects many of our
JDRF thanks Friendship at
residents, families, and children the Denim & Diamonds Gala
and grandchildren. With the outstanding support of
Friendship employees and corporate contributions,
(continued on page 2)
(continued from page 1)
along with overwhelming
support from the Roanoke
community, the JDRF Greater
Blue Ridge Chapter raised over
$330,000 for Type 1 Diabetes
research.
While we love giving back to
our community, it is our
residents and patients that we
prioritize. The vast amount of
Friendship charitable
contributions are given to our
own Friendship Family
members who are in need.
Our mission is to provide
quality residential and clinical
services to our residents and
community through the
provision of appropriately
licensed housing
accommodations, recreational
activities, assistance in daily
living, rehabilitative services,
and extended term nursing care.
Central to this mission is the
commitment to support our
community by providing care
and services to individuals of
varying financial means.
Friendship is Giving!
Hymn Sing With Carol
Stop by the piano lounge in
the lobby on your way to lunch
on the first Thursday of the
month. Carol Elmore, the
talented daughter of Alton and
Mildred Hipps, will be leading
us in a brief hymn sing of your
old favorites. Thanks, Carol!
Carol Elmore, Alton and Mildred’s
daughter, leads us in our April hymn sing
right before Easter.
Sunday Movies
Thanks to a helpful resident
volunteer, we’ll now have
Sunday afternoon movies at
2:00 p.m. in the 4th floor day
room and possibly in other day
rooms if there is interest. Got a
movie suggestion? Please share
it with Pat Johnston, 4th floor.
Memorial Day
Activities will vary slightly on
Monday, May 29th, due to the
Memorial Day holiday. Please
take a moment to remember
those we lost fighting for
freedom.
From History.com,
“Memorial Day, an American
holiday observed on the last
Monday of May, honors men
and women who died while
serving in the U.S. military.
Originally known as Decoration
Day, it originated in the years
following the Civil War and
became an official federal
holiday in 1971.”
Mother’s Day Tea
We invite our families to join
their mothers, and for all the
ladies to join us for an afternoon
tea in honor of women and
mothers on the Friday before
Mother’s Day. All ladies of
Friendship Assisted Living are
invited to attend along with
their daughters or other guests.
Men are welcome to attend as
well as we gather to honor the
mothers in our life, past and
present.
Competitive Team Trivia
Wellness Instructor Tee Barlow was able
to gift pairs of sneakers for wellness
participants. It was an awesome surprise
to the residents. Thanks to the donor who
inspired other people to donate sneakers
as gifts for the residents.
Starting next month, we’ll be
playing competitive team trivia.
Sometimes it will be the guys
versus the gals; other times the
first floor versus the third floor.
Either way, you’ll have a chance
to put your heads together
and win.

Construction Club
As you read about the
Construction Club’s beverage
table project, you may be
wondering what it’s all about.
Our group is creating a gift for
our Friendship friends at
Friendship South Rehab
Department. In order to
encourage those residents
recovering from surgery and
short-term illness to get better
faster, we’re reminding them to
drink more water with our
unique beverage station table.
We hope to involve as many
residents as possible in the
sanding, painting, distressing,
decorating, and delivery of this
gift. If you’re not sure if you can
do it, check out some of these
photos from last month. We can
all contribute a little something!

happening at that same time. So
much so that we celebrate this
holiday more in America than
they do in Mexico. Who knew!?
Happy Birthday!

May Birthday Celebration
We invite the friends and
family of our May birthday
residents to join us for lunch on
the second Wednesday of the
month, May 10th, at 11:30 a.m.
We have a special birthday cake
made by family volunteer Susan
Sielinski and music by Marc
Baskind.
Please RSVP with who will be
attending to our dining staff
(540-265-2171) and we’ll make
seating arrangements for you.
Cinco de Mayo
You might wonder WHY we
celebrate Cinco de Mayo if it’s a
Mexican holiday. Well, while the
fifth of May does commemorate
“the Mexican army’s 1862
victory over France at the Battle
of Puebla during the
Franco-Mexican War
(1861-1867),” it really inspired
the Americans fighting for the
Union Army in the Civil War

bus to arrive and take us home. It’s always
an adventure.

class.
