: FEELINGS FOLLOWING THE WAR
In 1763, the French and the British signed a peace treaty
ending the French and Indian War. By this treaty, England
took control of Canada from the French. England now had
a huge empire in America. With ownership of this great
empire came great change.
George Washington emerged from the war as a leader who
was to be well respected. Washington's French & Indian War
experience taught the 27 year old British​
officer much

about how to organize supplies, how to be a fair leader,
how to command, how to build forts, and how to manage
soldiers.
Colonists that fought alongside George Washington gained a tremendous amount of confidence in the war. They fought alongside the British
and had gained significant military knowledge. Colonists suddenly felt more like equals to the British citizens. Colonists no longer felt that
they needed to depend on the British, especially for protection. The colonists were particularly angry about the Proclamation of 1763, which
prohibited them from moving west of the Appalachian Mountains. They believed they had the right to move there because they had fought
for the land alongside the British.
The war had also cost so much money that England was deeply in debt. The English thought that the colonists should send some money to
help with the debt problem. After all, the British felt that England had spent this money trying to protect the colonies from the French.
The British soon realized that the only way to collect this much-needed money from the colonists would be to issue new taxes.
