Maths Shapes
Perimeter - The distance around a 2D (two dimensional) shape.
5m
3m
Circumference – the distance around the
edge of a circle (or any curvy shape). This is
the term used for the perimeter of a circle.
3m
5m
(not to scale)
In this example the perimeter of the rectangle is
3m +5m + 3m + 5m = 16m

Area - the area is the size of a surface.
5m
4m
3m
(not to scale)
4m
Area = width x height
The width is 5m and the height is 3m so
The area of the rectangle is 5m x 3m = 15m²
(not to scale)
The width and height are the same size.
The area of the square is 4m x 4m = 16m²

Tangram – this is a Chinese geometric puzzle that consists
of a square cut into seven pieces that can be arranged to
make various other shapes. (One parallelogram, one square
and five triangles).
Dodecahedron – this a three-dimensional
shape that has twelve plane faces.
Concentric – shapes that share the same centre,
where the larger one often completely surrounds

Here are some special types of Quadrilaterals (2D, 4-sided flat shapes) where the interior angles add up to 360° degrees.
Parallelogram – this is a four-sided flat shape with
straight sides. It has 2 pairs of parallel sides. Opposite
sides are equal in length. Diagonally opposite angles are
equal. Squares and rectangles are parallelograms.
Kite – this is a four-sided flat shape with straight sides. It has
2 pairs of sides of equal length next to each other.
Trapezium – this is a four-sided flat shape with straight
sides and 1 pair of parallel sides. It is also known as a trapezoid.
Rhombus – this is a type of parallelogram.
