Honoring our Veterans—Michelle Fisher, Shannon Koon and Chris Lochner
On Monday, November 16th, Greenville High School and Middle School Student Councils joined together to honor our
local veterans. Our entire school community dressed in red white and/or blue to welcome our local heroes. The walkway
was lined with flags. The morning began with the “Pledge of Allegiance” followed by the
“National Anthem” led by GCS student, Charlotte Hutchins. Our students, along with our 22
veterans, joined in as the anthem was sung. As the honorees enjoyed their breakfast and conversation with each other, our students were able to interact with our guests. The Middle
School Functional Skills class made red, white and blue placemats as gifts for the attendants.
Our students and staff feel honored to have hosted this event. We are so grateful to each and
every one of our service men and women for their unwavering dedication to our country.

MS/HS Library/Media Center News—Nancy Lockwood
The MS/HS Library Media Center has been a busy place this fall.
In September, the Scholastic Book Fair was held in the library with all middle school classes attending. There were many
high school students who browsed and purchased also. It was a great success for our PTSA and a wonderful opportunity
for all of our students. Sixth grade ELA classes came to the library for an orientation session that included a tour, a chance
to check out materials and have questions answered. Seventh and eighth graders visited also for a refresher about rules
and procedures in addition to browsing and checking out. Over 2,148 books, iPads and laptops have been checked out of
the library in September and October.
The media center was host to many other events such as a Constitutional Convention, Yellow Ribbon practice, High
School Picture Day and Middle School Art, Music, Science and Social Studies classes coming in to conduct research using
the library's resources. The library has sent five new high school students out into the driving world! Any HS student turning 16 may come in to the library and take their Permit Test at no cost. Packets and study booklets from the DMV are
available to students, and when ready, they can come in and schedule a day and time to take the test. Congratulations to all
of those students who have passed!
The annual Library Candy Corn contest was held in October. A glass pumpkin filled with candy
corn has students and staff using estimation skills to come up with the closest number they think is
in the container. The Middle School winner was sixth grader Melody Sprague, who was only two
off of the correct number! The High School winner was senior Alexandra Powers. Both winners
received a goody bag filled with a book, lots of candy and
other treats.
In November, the library set up a 'Thankful Tree', where
all staff and students can fill in a leaf to hang on the tree
with anything they are thankful for. The students enjoy
coming into the library to see what others have written. Thoughts have ranged
from being thankful for family, friends, their health, pets, books (YAY), technology and June 23rd.
An after-school Grades 6-12 Book Club being conducted by Ms. Lockwood, Library Media Specialist, and Ms. Moylan, 8th Grade ELA teacher, began on November 17th. The Book Club will try to
meet twice a month with a monthly genre booklist given to students for reading and discussion. Snacks, book-talking and
making new friends are on each month's agenda. Many additional activities are planned including author visits, field trips,
and participating in the New York State Reading Association's Charlotte Book Award voting, just to name a few. All student's are welcome to join at any time. Permission slips are in the library and may also be obtained from the Middle
School ELA teachers.

Spanish Field Trip—Alison Farison
On November 3rd, students in Ms. Farison's IB Spanish and Level IV Spanish classes attended a Minds On field trip to
the Carey Institute in Rensselaerville. This was an immersion experience and students spoke only in Spanish the whole
day. Students played word games, cooked Spanish recipes, wrote a song, and wrote and acted in plays—all in Spanish.
This was a great communicative experience for students and was a lot of fun.

November 1 and 2 was El Día de los Muertos in Mexico. It is a time when the Mexican people remember their
deceased love ones. On Monday, November 2nd, the students in Ms. Farison’s and Ms. Kudlack´s classes had a
guest speaker. Ms. Tracy Young, parent and Board of
Education member, spent five years in Guadalajara,
Mexico. Ms. Young spoke to the Spanish classes about
her experiences during the Día de los Muertos. Ms. Kudlack and Ms. Farison and their students would like to

High School Music Update—Jon Meredith
High School Musicians Excel On November 20th and 21st six students from Greenville High School participated in the
Zone 7 New York State Music Association (NYSSMA) Area All-State Festival at Saratoga Springs High School. This is
one of the largest and most competitive regional All-State festivals in the state. Students accepted to this festival were
nominated by their teachers, Mr. Rose and Mr. Meredith, based on scores from their NYSSMA solos last school year.
Student musicians are William Connolly, Alyssa Hopkins, Brittany Johnson (not pictured), Lucas Makely, Ethan Spring,
and Liam Williams in the concert band, and Bethany Overbaugh in the chorus. Congratulations to these outstanding musicians!
Sounds of the Season On December 17 -20, tenor Jacob Ruggiero will sing four performances with the Empire State
Youth Chorale in their annual Melodies of Christmas concert at Proctor’s Theatre. Each year this televised event raises
money for the Children’s Hospital at Albany Medical Center. Jacob was chosen for the ensemble after a competitive audition process involving students from over 75 public and private schools throughout Eastern New York, Western Massachusetts and Southern Vermont. Congratulations, Jacob!
FFA Band News—Erin Cioffi
This year, Autumn Brennan and Josette Content were selected for the National
FFA band! This is a highly selective group and a wonderful accomplishment
for these students. Only three students were selected from New York State, and
two of the students were from Greenville!
Autumn Brennan traveled to Louisville, Kentucky where she rehearsed and performed numerous concerts with the National FFA Band. The band rehearsed
and performed together for a full week during the National FFA Convention.
Josette Content was selected as a member, but was not able to participate due to
other musical commitments.
Congratulations to both of these students!

proud of their incredible season. Goalie Alysia Thomas
played a fantastic game- with 15 saves during regulation play.
Seventh Graders participate in "Minds On" DNA Exploration!—James Hutchins
On Monday, November 16th, eleven 7th grade students, along with their
science teacher Mr. Hutchins, traveled to the Carey Institute to participate in a full day workshop on DNA. The program was held by the
"Minds On" organization and was led by Alison and Richard Miller.
In the course of the day, the students used different lab equipment and
procedures to extract DNA from a banana and to extract their own DNA
from their cheeks. They learned proper micropipette techniques and
used these techniques to create a "DNA fingerprint" using gel electrophoresis. The students said that they learned a lot and enjoyed the opportunity to work on a variety of hands-on activities.
