REPORT:
Injuries in Racing Greyhounds
INTRODUCTION
In June 2004 the New Hampshire Legislature approved House Bill 520, which requires that dog
tracks begin reporting on injuries suffered by racing greyhounds. This requirement appears as
RSA 284, Section 14-d.
The following is a review of greyhound injury reports for the calendar year 2005.
372 TOTAL RACING INJURIES
During this initial reporting period, nearly four hundred injuries were reported at Hinsdale and
Seabrook Greyhound Parks. Lakes Region Greyhound Park was not in operation in 2005.
The most common injuries were ruptures, fractures and lacerations. Other reported injuries
included dislocations, paralysis, puncture wounds, bleeding toes, a broken tail, bruising, eye
damage and a collapsed trachea.

COMPARISON OF INJURIES AT HINSDALE & SEABROOK GREYHOUND PARKS
While the types of greyhound injuries at the two racetracks were similar, records indicate that
more injuries occurred at Seabrook than at Hinsdale.

RECOVERY PERIODS
A total of 225 (60% of submissions) specified an estimated recovery time. Based on these
reports, the average recovery rate equaled 4.4 weeks.1
An additional 147 reports failed to specify an estimated recovery time, but noted that dogs
either:

Suffered “career-ending” injuries

Were euthanized
The reported recovery time for injured racing greyhounds was similar at the two racetracks.

CONCLUSION
In total, 372 greyhounds were injured while racing in New Hampshire in 2005, more than seven
per week.
Based on average recovery times, types of injuries, and the number of career-ending injuries
reported, most greyhound injuries appear to be of a serious nature.

HORSE AND DOG RACING
Pari-Mutuel Commission
Section 284:14-d
284:14-d Records of Greyhound Injuries. –
I. The commission shall maintain accurate records and statistics regarding injuries to
greyhounds. The records shall include the following:
(a) The greyhound's registered name and right and left ear tattoo numbers.
(b) The owner, trainer, and kennel operator's name, business address, and telephone number.
(c) The color, weight, and sex of the greyhound.
(d) Where the injury took place on a race track or other area.
(e) If the injury occurred while the greyhound was racing, the race track where the injury
occurred, along with the distance, grade, race, and post position when the injury occurred; the
specific type of injury, the cause of the injury, the estimated recovery time, and the location of
injury on the greyhound.
II. All injury forms shall be completed and signed under the pains and penalties of perjury by
the race track veterinarian, whose signature shall be witnessed by a representative of the
commission. Whoever knowingly makes a false written statement on an injury form shall be
guilty of a violation. A person found guilty of knowingly violating this section for a second or
subsequent offense shall be guilty of a class A misdemeanor. Injury records created and
maintained under this section shall be retained by the commission for a period of 7 years and
shall be made available to the public upon oral or written request.
