We will read some of our favorite stories, and you will participate in various story-related activities, such as making your own book or writing a letter to your favorite character. You will encounter a brand spankin’ new Story Time adventure every week. O Rock Review for the Radio Taught by Peter Finch Limited to 15 students, ages 8–18 June 28 Saturday, from 12:30–2:00pm KFOG is looking for young rock critics to review music. Learn how to review music (or movies, or books, or sports) for radio. Your music review could end up on the radio! Peter Finch has been News Director and part of the morning show at KFOG radio since 1993. He is also a playwright. Poets, Poems, and Poetics Taught by Meghan Adler, Claudia Bluhm, and Emilie Coulson Limited to 20 students, ages 8–16 July 10, 17, 24, 31, August 7, 14 Thursdays, from 5:00–7:00 pm Do you like to write poetry? Do you know Sonnets from Cinquains? Elegies from Limericks? Japanese Haikus from American Haikus? Found Poems from Prose Poems? Free Verse from Concrete Poems? Join us and learn a variety of poetic forms. Study end rhymes, alliteration, and onomatopoeia (and learn how to spell them correctly!). We will create a group anthology chapbook at the end of our sessions and hold a poetry reading for you and your parents. O Pretty Poems and Beautiful Broadsides Taught by Susanna Kittredge Limited to 10 students, ages 14–18 July 13, 20, & 27 Sundays, from 12:30–2:30 pm Do you like to express yourself in writing? How about playing rhyming games or using your imagination? And what about making art? In this workshop, we’ll do all of those things and more! To poets, a broadside is a poem published on a single piece of paper with drawings or designs that enhance the beauty of the poet’s writing. We will practice some different ways of writing poetry, then we’ll print out our poems and decorate them to make beautiful broadsides to share with family and friends! The valencia bay-farer issue #21 Taught by journalism professionals Limited to 30 students, ages 8–18 July 23, 30, August 6, 13, 20, 27 Wednesdays, 5:00–7:00 pm Do you have tons of opinions you want to express, but don’t have an outlet? Do you know an amazing person that you’d like to interview? Have you ever thought about reviewing movies? Do you have a passion for the news? Are you a cartoonist or illustrator? Then here’s your chance to be published in a newspaper and have your words or drawings seen by a community of people. Come join the staff of the 826 Valencia Bay-farer, a newspaper written entirely by students and read by everyone! O Conquering the SAT Writing Section Taught by Jen Feng and Debbie Moguillansky Limited to 16 students, ages 14–18 August 16, 23, 30, & September 6 Saturdays, 12:30–2:30 pm SAT prep classes and books are often intimidating —full of lengthy practice tests and overwhelming information. Where can students turn when they want to do well on the SATs but can’t get past the classes and books? That’s where we come in! In this workshop we will learn key concepts tested in the writing section of the SAT. Through games and activities, we will learn how to spot specific grammatical mistakes, and we will practice crafting an effective SAT essay. Lastly, we will create an 826 SAT Prep Book complete with flashcards, practice test questions, and a wide selection of essays, all O 826 Valencia — SUMMER 2008 Workshops O All classes are taught by working professionals. This can be used as a study guide during subsequent SAT preparation, and will also serve as a helpful tool for future generations of SAT-takers. Because we recognize that the writing section is only part of the SAT, we will encourage students to prepare for the other SAT sections on their own; they will create study timelines to guide them and will be provided with resources to use. We hope to not only review the concepts that will help students ace the writing section, but also to teach study techniques that will help students succeed in the SAT overall. O Best American Nonrequired Reading Taught by Dave Eggers The 2008 session is closed Publisher Houghton-Mifflin has contracted 826 Valencia to compile The Best American Nonrequired Reading, a yearly collection of fiction, essays, comics, and journalism geared for readers under age 25 (although read by just about anyone). Every week, a student committee meets to gather possible material from national periodicals and discuss it. O Writing & Publishing Apprentices Taught by 10 Bay Area writers, editors and publishers Limited to 15 students, ages 13–18 Mondays, from 6:00–8:00 pm Do you like to express yourself in writing? O Summer Writing Camp Limited to 15 high school students August 11–15 Monday through Friday, 10am –5pm 826 Valencia and Youth Speaks are combining forces to host their sixth annual free summer writing camp! From August 11 to August 15, students will team up with professional writers, poets, and spoken word artists to develop their writing skills. Camp participants will have the opportunity to be published in the Fall 2008 issue of the 826 Quarterly. Guest speakers for the 2008 camp will be announced shortly. Guest speakers in past years have included Michael Chabon, Dave Eggers, Valetino Achak Deng, James Kass, Stephen Elliott, Erika Lopez, Nina Marie Martinez, Spike Jonze, Julie Orringer, Noah Hawley, Kim Addonizio, Melissa Mathison, Ryan Hartley, and Mark Danner.
