Welcome Note of the conference chair
Dear Colleagues,
It is my great honor and pleasure to welcome all delegates and guests at ISOCS 27 – the
27th International Symposium on Organic Chemistry of Sulfur, to be held at Jena from
July 24–29, 2016. Chemistry at Jena has a long and successful tradition dating back to
1789, when Friedrich August Göttling was appointed chair of chemistry at the University of Jena. In 2016 our chemistry faculty is celebrating the 200th anniversary of the
chemical institute that was brought to life by Johann Wolfgang Döbereiner (successor
to Göttling) in 1816 with great support of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, at the time
minister of science to the local Duke of Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach. In this chemistry
institute (the building is located at Neugasse 23 and still used by the university), Döbereiner discovered the catalytic activity of Platinum, invented “Döbereiner’s lighter”,
and made progress in defining systematic “triad” rules for the chemical reactivity of
the elements, an early form of the periodic table.
As of today about 200 participants from nearly 30 countries have registered. The
meeting will feature 6 plenary lectures, 20 invited lectures, 40 oral presentations and
nearly 70 posters focused on the frontiers of all aspects of Organic Sulfur Chemistry.
Looking at the names of those who have accepted to give talks it is easy to predict a
high scientific level for the meeting. It has been one of our major motivations to enable especially young scientists for giving short oral communications, which have been
selected from the Organisation Committee. On Tuesday afternoon we are organizing
that special session for young scientists for giving them an opportunity to present
their exciting work in the whole auditorium.
Furthermore, there will be two dedicated poster sessions during the conference. We
are deeply grateful to the precious support of the Taylor and Francis Group who have
sponsored three poster awards.
Sincere thanks are due to the speakers, to the International Committee and the National Advisory Board for their important contributions to the scientific contents, the
Local Organizing Committee and the vice-chairs Hans-Dieter Arndt/Jena and Grzegorz
Mloston/Lodz for the invaluable help given in the organization of the symposium.
We sincerely hope that participants will appreciate great benefit from the conference
and will also enjoy their stay in Thuringia, one of the most historic and scenic regions
of Germany.
In closing, let me wish us all a scientifically exciting and stimulating
meeting on all aspects of the Organic Chemistry of Sulfur - and
beyond!
Sincerely,
Wolfgang Weigand
On behalf of the Organizing Committee

27th International Symposium on Organic Chemistry of Sulfur
Welcome Note of the State Secretary
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Participants in the 27th International Symposium on Organic Chemistry of Sulfur,
On behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research I would like to welcome
you to Jena to exchange the latest ideas and results on the organic chemistry of sulfur.
Unfortunately, sulfur does not enjoy the best reputation among the general public.
It is usually associated with a bad smell and even with the devil himself. But from
a scientific or technical point of view, this is not at all justified. Due to its chemical
properties sulfur occurs as a building block in a huge variety of inorganic and organic compounds. Compounds with sulfur moieties are omnipresent and demonstrate
interesting properties that are used in a great number of applications, ranging from
pharmaceuticals to fertilizers. In fact, the world around us would be quite different
without sulfur and its chemical properties.
Apart from the scientific insights to be gained by investigating the properties of sulfur,
we can also expect valuable contributions to the development of new materials. The
Federal Ministry of Education and Research is addressing this aspect as part of the
German federal government’s new “High-Tech Strategy”. The funding program “From
Materials to Innovations”, for instance, sets out to push the limits of technology and
new materials. Recently, many new materials have been developed with the support
of the Ministry’s funding schemes where sulfur-containing organic compounds have
been essential. One remarkable example is the development of macromolecular and
polymeric active materials for use in organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) and organic
photovoltaic cells (OPVCs). The electrical and optical features of the materials used
for the active layer of OLEDs and OPVCs can be tuned and optimized for a specific
application by incorporating sulfur-containing heterocyclic aromatics, e.g. thiophene
and thiazole. This technology is just entering the market in the form of highly efficient
displays and lightweight or flexible devices.
I wish all the participants in the 27th International Symposium on Organic Chemistry of
Sulfur fruitful discussions and new insights which will advance our scientific knowledge
as well as our capability for science-based innovation.
Best wishes
State Secretary
Dr. Georg Schütte

Welcome Note of the INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE
Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the International Committee for ISOCS, it is my pleasure to welcome
you to ISOCS-27.
In 1964 Professor Horak and his colleagues invited a small group of chemists to the
first conference on organic sulfur chemistry convened in a castle in Liblice near Prague.
This remote venue proved conducive to vigorous and insightful discussions which have
been the hallmark of these conferences. The innovative meeting in Liblice and the
expanding impact of sulfur chemistry resulted in prestigious biennial ISOCS conferences all over the world, eagerly awaited by the scientific community, for over fifty
years. In addition to formal and informal presentations these meetings feature vigorous discussions in a congenial atmosphere in the lecture halls, at poster sessions and
at informal social gatherings.
Professor Weigand, his local Organizing Committee, National Advisory Board and
Conventus have organized an outstanding ISOCS-27 meeting both scientifically and
socially. This is a wonderful opportunity to make new friends, initiate new contacts, be
inspired scientifically, have your ideas critically discussed, receive recognition for your
insights, attend the industrial exposition and enjoy the cuisine, culture and ambience
of Jena and Thuringia.
The members of the International Committee wish that you personally benefit from
these outstanding opportunities!
Best wishes,
Professor Richard S. Glass

Paul Alewood is Professor at the Division of Chemistry and Structural Biology in the Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB) at the
University of Queensland. He has an international reputation in the
field of bioactive peptides and synthetic proteins and is the author of
over 300 publications in high quality journals. He is also an inventor
