NIFA Update – Bill Hoffman – USDA Representative to JCEP
 FY’12 Budget – $1.3 Billion – 96% out as payments to state land grant colleges. Top
line item - $290 million – Smith-Lever funds to states. State legislators must match,
submit 5 year Plan of Work and Annual Report -“Not an academic exercise.” – used
to support the work of Extension with Congress.
 Respond to this scenario: Sec. of Ag. has heard that one Senator is going to make a
push that Extension funding isn’t worth it. Comments from participants:
 Talk to legislators how successful 4-H members are in the community and
that they will become registered voters.

 Have you ever noticed how we are patient, understanding and sympathetic with
people at work, but not so much at home?
 Technology really affecting how we relate to each other
 Facebook is a top 5 reason for divorce
 Morality has always had to catch up with technology – ie, atomic bomb
 Generational differences, role models
 More need for immediate gratification
 Entitlement creates dependency
 The need for recognition – self-esteem, Pride – dignity & self-respect
 Class is a bigger factor than race, religion amongst people today
 Work ethics and morality different
 “You teach best in life what you want to learn the most.”
 Core Values/Integrity/Morality
 Ask yourself – If your father were alive today, what would you tell him? (2
CEO’s in Michigan did this)
 What is it we stand for? – Education, unbiased, research-based, help
empower people, passion for making people’s lives better, accountability
 Remove the use of this word from your organization – “Whatever”
 Need to install politeness, courteousness and being thoughtful
 Why are core values important? – It drives what we do and how people look
at us. Holds people accountable. What is integrity? What do people
perceive the meaning of the word to be? Everyone may understand this
differently depending on how they were raised.
 Can either live with our dysfunctions or use core values to fight our
dysfunctions
 Create mutual respect for proper communication
 You earn self-esteem
 Learn to ask more questions for better assessments resulting in better
decisions
 Pat on the back of verbal praise is important
 Know what values you hold dear as there is a world of opposing values and if
you aren’t sure of yours, how can you provide leadership?
 Every success has strong accountability
 Problem is – “You have people waking up looking for a better past”
 Difference between a reason and an excuse – late for work once because of
a flat tire – reason, late for work frequently – excuse – It’s all a choice
 Professionalism is emotional patience




Ethical ambitions has created some of the greatest thing on earth
When we lack goals there is no motivation to achieve anything
Content of your character is what people remember the most
If you are under the age of 30, you are probably married to your opposite,
however common core values is what holds things together
 2 primary things that influence our decisions – needs and fears
 Integrity – doing what’s right when no one is looking, high ethical, moral
compass, high self-respect
 At the foundation of integrity is morality
 Leadership
 People that waffle have no respect and lose credibility
 Questions for life – What do you want to be remembered for? Are you living
a life of what you want to be remembered for? Why do people follow you?
What characteristics do you have?
 Characteristics of leaders that make you want to follow them – They mean
what they say and they are straightforward. Expectations of a leader (from
participants):

 How do you motivate others? Make people feel valued. Ask to provide
feedback from others.
 Success is the journey. Best definition of success – “Can’t wait to get to work
and can’t wait to get home.” – work/life balance
NACAA Session
Paul Craig – current NACAA President
 NACAA Meeting at Galaxy in Pennsylvania - $150 voucher (for future NACAA
meeting) for all that register as an active member (Does not include, Comm.
chairs, vice chairs or 1st timers) Need to do early bird registration to receive $150
voucher
 Mike Hogan – need to get members to apply for Reg. Chair & Vice Chair positions.
Memberships sent in by Feb. 15th to be eligible for awards. March 1st awards
deadline. 124 abstracts for presentations, 96 posters
 Paul W. – need to register as NACAA member in order for our association to
receive left-over funds
 Jerry – Awards – Hall of Fame – must be a DSA winner and do outstanding work on
community service (national)
 Steve – Scholarships – goal of $1 mill., vested at $40 for $1,000 and $100 it’s
$2,000
 Mark N. – talked about serving in National office
 National Outstanding Young Farmer Award – Aug. 1st deadline, can’t be over 41 by
Jan. 1st, 2014
 NACAA Journal – June and Dec. publishing dates
 Jerry – Life members –encouraged to come to annual meeting
 Jerry & Pete – early registration deadline for PILD is March 15th, May 1st for JCEP
Excell. In Team Work award

 Steve – AM/PIC participation, 1st time webinars, Online state wide webinar for new

 The competition between desire and risk – OK to make a conscious decision to
