Every 26 seconds in America, a student drops out of school.
This adds up to more than 1 million students – a group roughly
equivalent to the size of the population of Dallas, Texas – leaving
school every year. Half these dropouts come from just 10 percent
of schools.

English – to help students stay in school and on track to succeed.
City Year places AmeriCorps members in some of our nation’s
highest-need schools. Our model, Whole School Whole Child,
is based on research that suggests students most at risk of
dropping out can be identified as early as sixth grade. Corps
members work with teachers and principals to identify students
This year, 2,500 corps members will serve 150,000 students
in grades 3 through 9 at 247 schools in 24 cities across the
country. These full-time, professionally trained young adults tutor
students one-on-one, provide additional support for teachers in
classrooms, and coordinate programs and activities that benefit
the whole school.
